"Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA any luck with this working on ESX?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-19 12:11:06

Hello,Has anyone confirmed if Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1210SA works on ESX yet? This is just for testing purpose and not production. I've been searching through the internet for low-cost Serial ATA RAID that has been confirmed works on ESX (LSI Logic MegaRAID 150-4. LSI Logic MegaRAID 150-6. Adaptec 2610SA and possibly Adaptec 2410SA) . After searching for the prices which ranges well over £130 -£300 for the new LSI MagaRAID 300-8X SATA II RAID. So was wondering if anyone has been able to use Adaptec 1210SA successfully on ESX which is just under £50 as i'm about to get one and try on my ESX 3.... Also heard the new version of ESX 3 (3.5 or so) supports SATA drive installation of ESX including the VMFS. VMCORE files.... can anyone confirm cos buying the expensive Controller might be a waste of money if in the long run the new version now fully supports full SATA 150 or SATA II drives installation I'm almost positive that the 1210SA will not work as it implements software RAID ( in hardware ). You can identify controllers that use software raid because they don't use an onbaord cache of which this card has none. I wouldn't waste any money on it. You can pick up an adaptec 2610sa on ebay for around $100USD. In the past I had also been picking up HP P400 w/ 512MiB cache and battery for around $200USD but that seems to be hit and miss lately. Perhaps the supply of them dried up. Cards based on the LSI 1068 chipset also seem to work well and have pretty good performance. There are other options as well such as using NFS and/or iSCSI for a datastore which don't involve buying RAID cards at all. Thanks guys well guess i'll have to get it in the end (Adaptec or LSI MegaRAID). The thing is cant get cheaper NAS box which supports NFS most of then are SMB/CIFS/NTFS and iSCI which i believe will involve running Linux correct me if i'm wrong.... and me coming from a WINTEL background with no knowledge of Linux/Unix environment and Virtualisation been the next boom in the IT industry and have to involved with ESX and not sure wot MS are doing with their MS 2008 virtualisation server which looks ok (based on Vista though and not a fan of it).

"Installing Adaptec SCSI Ultra320 Card ASC-29320LP drivers using ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:44:11

Hey it looks like it liked the aix 79xx drivern the drivers loaded for the scsi separate but now it asks for the media and somehow forgotten it booted from the cd and wants drivers for that - if you choose ftp it wants drivers for the nic. Looks desire the linux kernel that the ESX install CD uses isn't detecting your IDE controller. If you want you can do a network install to get around this air (although you may not be able to use the physical CDROM in any of your VM's if the kernel doesn't detect your IDE controller after ESX is installed). To do a network install just copy the entire contents of the ESX CD to a server with an FTP or HTTP service running and on a network to which the server that you are trying to install has communicate access. If you have a Red Hat/CentOS Linux box on your communicate you can use it. Here are some docs for setting it up:Basically you copy the ESX CD contents to a server and then choose the Install Method you want (FTP/HTTP) and click next. The installer will then ask you for the server hostname/IP communicate and the path to install files. For example if you copy the ESX CD to a Linux box at 10.10.10.10 into directory /var/www/html/esx/ then your method would be HTTP. IP communicate would be 10.10.10.10 and path would be esx/Do a Google search for Red Hat network install (since the ESX installer is based on Red Hat's anaconda installer) and you should be able to get more detailed information if you need it. Good luck That's good info. I'm starting the $3000 course install and config tomorrow. Should learn some more solid info there. So from what I gather the onboard IDE driver is not on the ESX server's hardware compat list. So either I buy a PCI IDE card that is (Q: do you experience a mark name?) or I do this network install via FTP. The communicate install is two fold one I undergo to get the actual redhat drivers for the marvell onboard nic. I've located the files for linux install but heck If I can get the drivers to load. I've been doing the extract of files for years and I get how to extract and where to put the files on the root of the disk. I've copied the contects of common files to a disk without the "H" folder- tried that - nope. I'm a windows guy so I should be able to copy driver to disk and insert disk am I missing some other work that needs to be done? I've reviewed red hat linux install been to both motherboard LAN driver section and MARVELL CHIPSET website as well. Are you trying to run this server in a production environment or just for testing? VMware will only support installations on hardware that is in the HCL. Although it may work initially you never know what kind of results you'll get running non-supported hardware in a production environment. If you want to just install ESX to do testing for your class just install ESX into a VM. transfer VMware Server install it on the OS of your choice create a VM and then edit the VMX file as described in one of these articles:They apply to installing ESX in Fusion (VMware's virtualization production for Mac OS X) but editing the VMX with the appropriate options should allow you to run ESX on pretty much any VMware product (Workstation. Server. Fusion or ESX). If you used the automatic partitioning during installation then I believe you should have at least one vmfs3 volume on which to hold on VMs. You could always re-install do manual partitioning and then create a vmfs3 volume. This is the partitioning scheme I usually use if I do manual:/boot 100M sda1/ 5000M sda2/var/log 2047M sda2swap 1600M sda5vmkcore 100M sda7vmfs3 rest of disk sda6 Hi Kyle so are you seeing no data store in Configuration\Storage or SCSI target in Configuration\Storage Adapters once the install is complete? You may want to try to create the VMFS partition and format it manually. In your case you would need to remove the existing VMFS partition and then act a new one. The vmkfstools format command would need to be altered to match your setup.

"aacraid_esx30 and Adaptec SAS-3405" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:44:54

I'm experimenting with the 30-day evaluation license of ESX Server 3.0.2-52542 and I'm having a difficult measure installing it because of my Adaptec SAS-3405 SAS controller. Upon booting the installer in text mode the message "Loading aacraid_esx30 driver..." appears for about 5 minutes before asking me to test the lay CD. I selected "Skip" and then the same "Loading aacraid_esx30 driver..." message returned for many more minutes. Eventually this too timed out and the installer continued. I also undergo an IDE disk in the machine and this is the only control listed when installation reaches the Partitioning go. This is insufficient since it leaves me with nowhere to store guest VM images. I came across a forum post entitled "aacraid_esx30 / Adaptec RAID 2120S" where somebody else had the same problem. No resolution is posted however. I have updated the firmware on my motherboard and the Adaptec SAS controller to the latest available versions and the problem persists. Adaptec lists ESX Server 3 as supporting the SAS-3405 with no additional driver needed. Hi John any develop in this air?. I want to build ESX whitebox using the same Adaptec 3405 SAS controller but unfortunately I did not found any success stories about 3405 SAS to be working on ESX 3 x neither on community forum nor on web Thanks John. Its good to hear indeed! Have you successfully tested 3.0.1 or older release on your HW configuration then? What drop the results? Actually Adaptec has not officially declared any speciffic ESX version in technical pelt for this separate (only command information there). I'm quite afraid of buying this separate without beeing sure if if ordain bring home the bacon or not. I think I'm going to assay and buy this separate. (It will take approx 1-2 weeks according to shipment conditions - to Czech republic). I'm going to try several releases and post the results here - maybe that will bring any significant resolution... Finally. VMware announced to include official support for SATA (in release information) - I'm quite curious about what this will bring. Hello,I undergo a Adaptec RAID SAS 3405 that runs on a VMware ESX 3.0.2 build 52542 with two SATA disc on 500GB; issues: i get MPS open but host is using PIC on my box but i evaluate this error has nothing to do with my Adaptec RAID SAS 3405 because it's up and runing now with vm's. I think the MPS error has something to do with my junk motherboard. Hi,Unfortunatly I have the same problem with esx server 3.01 and 3.5. The latest information about this says that 3405 is not supported by vmware. Adaptec support already is thinking about this problem. If that come true it would be a compel. I believed Adaptec product info about the compatiblity. Has anyone an idea or knows anything alternative? I habe already a intel board s5000v with 3 hotplug sas drives. Costs should be limited. RAID 5 is a must. This problem has also reared it's ugly continue for me as well. I am using an Adaptec 3805 with a combination of SAS and SATA drives each in their own RAID 5 groups. The exact same thing of "loading aacraid_esx30 driver..." for 5-10 mins coming up to the skip CD evaluate act another 5-10 mins and then the lay complains it can sight no hard drives AT ALL. This is of course AFTER looking at the IO compatibilty PDF from VMware stating I am really not impressed. If it's not true or has not been thoroughly tested. I would suggest that VMware please shift it from the documentation as I have invested another $350+ in a card I did not need. Currently I am using an Intel S5000VSA come in with it's own SATA RAID controller on it as come up (it's disabled). When it's enabled. ESX does not see the assail only individual drives.. and although this controller is not in the list of compatible controllers it actually sees more than the supposed compatible controller! If anyone has any additional info that might back up this work please discuss. Thanks! Just an update from my end. I pursued Adaptec support about this who offered a few suggestions. Tried them didn't work - and from that point on they've been ignoring my (repeated) e-mails. a solution was allready open. These Adaptec Controller works very fine but it require a update of the motherboard BIOS. Please go to the intel homepage downloading new BIOS. Thanks to the Adaptec Support too - but I use my press contacts.... Dear Jubalkessler, now I'm approve from CeBit. Germany. Because Adaptec SAS 3405 is a 4 lane Card you be a grade of BIOS because on motherboard there is a 8 lane slot. BIOS-Update on Intel come in desire s5000VSA is very easy. Put in the CD and allow a update internet access assumed. Manual update is available on Second. You need a actual update of BIOS on SAS 3405 available on internet place of Adaptec. Onboard controller on motherboard is disabled. More information uprading BIOS you ordain find on Intel and Adaptec documentation. It is important for Vmware esx server that you use the alter combination of motherboard and controller. Maybe other motherboard than Intel may not bring home the bacon. More information about compatibility you ordain find on vmware domiciliate summon.

"Adaptec hostRAID support in 3.0.2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:08:53

Everything I've seen so far says that the hostRAID software feature found on some Adaptec SCSI controllers (in my inspect on IBM x346 servers) is not supported in 3.0.2. Can someone confirm if this is still true? This becomes an air when I'm trying to use 34 GB drives in a RAID 0 configuration to get enough space on local drives to install VMs for certification purposes. The installation sees it as separate drives. I tried to install a hostRAID driver from IBM's site for RHEL3 U8 using the "esx dd" dominate. But the driver image is too big to fit on a floppy and ESX lay doesn't recognize my usb drive. The only other option I see is to order larger drives for my x346 servers but I'd like to avoid that if possible. This is comfort adjust. Hostraid is more or less a software raid with some ASIC support (most of the logic is in the driver). You can easily see this when using a hostraid adapter in a non Windows system. FreeBSD for example won't see a RAID volume but two independent disks.

"Booting not detecting Adaptec 39320 scsi controller after enabling ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:27:16

Hi,I be some help. If someone put me on the right track please. I have motherboard Supermicro p4SCT+II with Marvell controller on the come in. I also have Adaptec 39320 SCSI controller 64bit pluged in slot be5 and I connected 2 320 scsi drives on each bring in Raid-0 configuration (total 4 drives)My operating system is XP on Channel A assail on my SCSI. I'm booting from SCSI and I would desire to be that way. Now I would like to connect 2 SATA drives or more to Marvell controller on the come in. It says I ordain be able to cerebrate 6 drives in total. When I switch in BIOS to direct my Marvell as Raid I'm loosing access to my SCSI Adaptec. No detection in BIos and Booting just shows Marvell controller alter. gratify helpThanks In advance!Adam If you alter booting from the Marvell it should work just as it did before with the SATA controller as just a secondary controller rather than a primary boot controller. I believe if you be in the BIOS for something like (in my case at least) Boot from SATA RAID or SCSI you can pick SCSI and undergo it work. This is going to be tricky though with that kind of a setup. Still if it becomes too much for you I'll gladly act those SCSI drives off your hands ChristmasHeaven theme designed by Zardon. "Against Bland Backdrop of VMworld, Adaptec 700i Series shines" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 17:22:18

Look. I experience that server virtualization is hot right now and that the storage guys want to go along for the ride.  I like DataCore’s announcements in connection with VMworld since they are bragging about actual customer successes with their products: they have seen a big uptick in sales undergo seen of their “SAN” virtualization play in concert with VMware deployments.  I also desire what LeftHand has done in adding their clustering story to a VMware environment.  That company is moving closer every day to becoming a software-only play.  That said we undergo open VMware ESX to be well kind of buggy and painful to care in our lab tests.  I would go cautiously a few servers at a time in setting up this environment — especially if you be to benefit on their supposed campus clustering solution which in my view ain’t quite soup yet.  But that’s just me always finding the bad in what everyone wants to view as the greatest thing since sliced bread. What I really hope doesn’t happen is the passing without notice of important news from Adaptec about its Snap Server 700i Series product family.  Guys for hosting SQL Server or transfer Server this kit is the bomb.  Great performance numbers excellent resiliency good scaling story and you can’t defeat the price the 700i family is a potential hit out of the lay in iSCSI targets with SAS/SATA internals.

"Adaptec Snap Server 700i Series provides iSCSI performance ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:14:49

iSCSI got a boost today with Adaptec's addition of the 700i Series Snap Server appliances which adds vertical iSCSI scalability up to a possible 36TB with a mix of SATA and SAS disks. From day one it also supports Windows. VMWare and Linux. This gives Adaptec the advance over its enjoin iSCSI competitors in several respects. merchandise faith in iSCSI is growing because it provides good performance with a much lower determine tag than fibre channel (FC) and without most of the complexity that comes with FC connection. However. Adaptec has further boosted performance by introducing a new Linux-based operating system: OnTarget OS. Don Chouinard. Adaptec's systems storage assort director of marketing told me: "This takes find straight drink to blocks to utilise the Adaptec RAID separate [hardware RAID SAS controller]; it effectively pushes the operating system to one side." This he said dramatically increased performance for iSCSI (only) with benchmark tests showing three times competitive raw performance as come up as better price-performance on a like-for-like copy comparison in most cases. If you then feed in the 700i's alter lead in vertical scalability—with the ability to add capacity on the fly—and greater flexibility in supporting any mix of abstain SAS and lower be SATA plough there are reasons to think Adaptec could have a high-seller on its hands—as desire as supporting iSCSI alone is no problem. In this believe. Chouinard confirmed that Adaptec had no plans to phase out the long-established Guardian OS used by the other mouth Server models which also supports NAS (CIFS. NFS and AFP). Of particular interest to MS Windows users running applications such as transfer. SQL Server or Oracle is the ability to run synchronous mirroring between two Snap Server 700i series appliances connected to the application servers through an IP SAN; redundant Gigabit Ethernet cabling plus switches will then maximise uptime for high availability. Plans for mirroring in a Linux environment should arrive fruition in the first half of next year. Another Windows positive is provision of accelerated backups not involving the application servers if MS VSS hardware snapshots are stored on the 700i and exposed to a backup server on the IP SAN. There are three 1U high rack-mounted models. The 720i provides 1 or 2TB SATA drives. 730i 3TB SATA and the 750i 1.2TB 15,000 rpm SAS drives. Expansion comes through adding a 2U Adaptec SANbloc S50 chassis each chassis housing 12 hot-swappable SATA or SAS drives. Estimated US pricing range is $8,000 (1TB 720i)–$23,300 (1.2TB SAS 750i with 4 GigE network ports). Set-up wizards ordain alter set-up reduce deployment measure while snapshot software bundled with each model can be used to auto-schedule recovery points throughout the day. All in all the 700i be looks to be neat and uncomplicated while also potentially blowing the performance socks off competitors in its determine be.
