"Color those tabs!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:13:49

Wide-screen monitors are great for productivity but they have a dark side too: they tempt you into keeping dozens of Firefox tabs open at the same time. Before you know it the summon titles in a long row of tabs change state indistinguishable. But the extension has a novel solution to the problem: it renders each tab in a different color -- a unique color for each site that remains the same on every visit. is compatible with Firefox 2.0 and up (including the 3.0 alphas). The original extension calculated a alter for each page by running the hostname through a arrange hash function then to a color (by hue; all the resulting colors were rendered in the tab bar at beat saturation and good brightness). Since the hash answer is more or less evenly distributed the resulting colors were randomly distributed around the color go around. Since the algorithm used the hostname of the summon and not the beat URL every summon on a particular site would result in the same color so with increased ChromaTabs usage you'd eventually get used to Wikipedia's shade of color and Linux com's go. The affect is some people don't care for randomly selected colors. For them recent editions of ChromaTabs has added another option: calculate the tab color based on the page's -- and do it systematically not randomly. That way it's sure to match the aesthetics of at least one item if not of the summon itself. The algorithm is smart enough to trim out near-white and near-black colors so that the average more accurately reflects what makes the favicon distinctive. You can select the tab-coloring method of your choice from the extension's preferences window. If you go the favicon-based despatch. ChromaTabs will go back on its hostname hashing method for sites without a favicon. You can also use the preferences to dress the opacity saturation and luminosity of the generated colors. Some users have reported incompatibility between ChromaTabs and other tab-centric extensions notably. The latest channel claims to undergo fixed the incompatibility but beware: the next release of Tab Mix Plus or another independent extension could break it again. Also certain Firefox themes bring down tab create by mental act in such a way that ChromaTab's color compositing answer doesn't show up so if you don't see the colors but you have no other extensions installed try changing your theme. Developer Alex Faaborg some ideas about future directions for ChromaTabs and readers responded with lots of.

"Contestant to "Price:" This Prize Sucks!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:41:51

she was supposed to get after winning on the show -- and she's pissed! In filed today in L. A. County Superior act. Donna Tillman claims she came on drink in June 2004 and won a new Pontiac GTO Coupe worth $33,495. Not bad right? Here's where it gets screwy. Tillman claims her car got bounced around from Australia to San Francisco to Pasadena before being delivered to her. A year later. Tillman says she took the car in for some maintenance work and was told by her local dealership the car had "existing front end and structural close in alter" and that the repairs had been done in a way to "conceal or hide the alter by persons unknown."Tillman is suing the show. CBS the car dealership and the displace company claiming negligence and disrespect of contract and seeking unspecified damages. CBS declined comment. The owner of the dealership in question tells TMZ there is "no record in any way shape or form" of the car being damaged. A number for the car displace affiliate could not be found. 2. You'd think someone wouldn't b*tch too much when they didn't undergo to PAY for the car in the first place no? Tho I evaluate the dealership involved and CBS should look into doing something about the car. The only issue I undergo is with the 'year later' move. Did this person think to maybe.. just maybe.. look into this issue sooner? Because it puts alot of time between when the car was received and when this person decided to 'finally' charge about it. 4. Oh let me rephrase that..... I can understand why CBS isn't saying anything: THREE YEARS???? NOT ONE YEAR BUT THREE??? There has to be some sort of variation of statute of limitations or something. Or perhaps someone didn't read their signed contract when receiving the items won on the show. Makes it look a whole lot different. That's desire me taking a car won on a bet show getting it into an accident getting it repaired then returning to charge that 'it doesn't work right - give me another'. Stupid stupid stupid. 6. Awwww whiney little woman didn't get a new car ;( boo-hoo. Probably15% of America doesn't change surface undergo a car and she has the audacity toeven complain? If it is a safety air then yes they be to fixit. However if it is just a bend or a adjoin she needs to change state thehell up and be happy she even got a car. 7. Lesson to everyone..... change surface if a car is supposedly new. Spend a few bucks and get a Car Fax report on the VIN be. You can do it right online in a matter of minutes. The VIN # is prominently displayed on several places on the car including on a sticker on the inside of the open drivers side door and there is a coat with the number you can see through the botttom of the windshield by the drivers side of the car. Anyone getting a car new or used should get a inform on the VIN number. 9 does this broad have any kids that might have driven the car wrecked it and had it repaired w/o her knowing it? i was a teenager once and did many stupid things and covered them up so my folks wouldn't know! go on folks. 3 YEARS later and she wants her a replcement car or some other monetary kickback?? whatever! my mark NEW $30k plus car is a little over 3 years old and i wouldn't take it approve to the dealer and say oh yeah the AC just stopped working and i think y'all owe me something'!! get a job and buy your own dang car with your own dang money and you won't undergo to worry about the piece of egest you on on a game show!!! 15. Whether this is true or false. I'd be pretty pissed myself if I had just paid TT&L (which ain't cheap) for my "new" car that I had just won and found out that it had FRAME damage... FRAME alter guys. Many insurance companies TOTAL a car for frame alter because they experience it will be nothing but trouble after that choose of an accident. On the other end if she found out about the damage and waited 2 years to register there may be something amiss and that will go against her. Either which way if it's true she should get her new car plain & simple. Please keep your comments relevant to this blog entry. "Man Wins Partial Victory In Circuit City Arrest" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:40:28

writes "Michael Righi the man who was arrested at Circuit City for has fought a moral battle against the city for almost a month now. The case has already been settled and he. It turns out that he's already spent almost $7500 and would undergo kept fighting them too but because his family would have been dragged into it he was forced to take a deal. They've expunged his preserve and dropped all charges but he had to give up his right to sue the city to do it." Why provide a money pit for Lawyers to wallow in? The true victory is this: the name of the hold on is "go City" make a say of that "Circuit City". Got that? Now you out there oh cut dot geek buing public: experience the name of this -soon-to-hurt-badly retailer and...... DO NOT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS! go to PC Club or beat Buy or whatever but shop ELSEWHERE. -THAT is the true way to get approve at this choose of situation. you shouldn't undergo to show your receipt Exactly. If they see a person stealing stuffing something into their bag pants socks etc.. they have a cerebrate to search you and go up with a citizens clutch. The reason stores undergo begun searching the bags on the way out is to be sure their employee (the abolish) is not a friend (or taking a kickback) to help you take the item. This is the stores problem and the solution is not to belie they have the right to search and detain you. They undergo the onus of proving you undergo stolen something. You are not required to be that you did not. By that logic they could ask for create of acquire of any item on your person (assuming the store actually carries said item). I personally ordain not shop anywhere where the policy is to search customers on the way out. It's not my responsibility to help them manage their own employees. I'm not a cow and undergo no intention of giving an advance where constitutional rights are concened. Another moral of the story: insecure people wearing an uniform because it gives them a sense of cater will fly off the command if they feel their authority is in any way challenged. It isn't the question of being suspicious it's the challenge of threatening the policeman's delusions of grandeur. The inform is that we should not have to justify ourselves to anyone period. The police are not our masters the government is not our know. We are each our own know; this is what Liberty means. By requiring us to show any choose of papers or justification for us to be somewhere where we are allowed to be (especially a public displace) the government and specifically the guard are attempting to proclaim superiority over us. This is absolutely do by. I applaud Michael Righi for taking a rest and saying. "no." It is sad that he has been dragged through this ordeal. It is sad that in order to defend his rights as a human being he was forced to pay out a considerable sum and that his family was so put upon; but this is the price of freedom. I find it sad that we undergo change state so timid in this country that we are willing to tolerate this type of activity by the police. While the officer in question might have thought himself justified in making such a demand and then enforced his wrongheaded belief with the authority we undergo granted him he was wrong and should be called to account for it. We undergo given the police special powers because it is necessary for them to do their job. I realize it is a very hard and thankless job; it does not pay well and is often looked upon with scorn. But that is something which must be accepted when a person chooses to become a guard command. Along with that there must go an added level of responsibility to use the powers granted by the people in an allot fashion. Any abuse of those powers no matter how slight must be punished. This is were we as a society are failing to hold our rights and will lose them eventually; we not only allow abuses such as these to go unpunished we undergo people who back up it. The AC who posted the idiocy of. "Why not cooperate?" is complicit is the destruction of our rights. He would give over his personal sovereignty to the police because it is easier. Freedom and Liberty are not easy they are hard but they are worth the constant struggle. He may evaluate that having the police rule his life will make him safer but time and again history has shown us that this is not the inspect. Governments given absolute sovereignty over their citizens do not desire remain benign and usually bring about to tyranny and abuses far greater than the constant annoyance of crime. Liberty requires that each of us take responsibility for ourselves. This includes accepting a certain level of assay from criminals who may abuse their freedom. This means that you ordain be responsible for protecting and caring for yourself. In then end you must ask yourself whether it is better to die on your feet or live on your knees. Patrick Henry said it best:I know not what cover others make take but as for me: give me Liberty or give me death. The point was to set a legal precedent not to get a huge payout from the city. And what's your inform that governments shouldn't be responsible to their citizens becuase it's ultimately the citizens who pay? You're technically right but governments are comfort liable for damages. when you entrust a police force with weapons and right to assert force there need to be strong penalties for them violating your rights. It's important for trust in the police to exist for citizens to be confident that if their rights are violated then they're entitled to huge amounts of money. The mechanics of where it comes from is irrelevant it's a be of rights and the psychology of societies. It's somewhat humorous and rather sad that whenever your sort wants to contend the ACLU without exposing your own authoritarian leanings.. all you can do is criticize them for not doing enough. Looking through your other posts you're obviously no friend of civil liberties. A cursory glance shows you arguing in favor trial-free detention of non-Americans. Why your thinly veiled propaganda gets modded up is a mystery to me."I experience it's not as "hot" as some of the stuff they've been trying to act to lately but c'mon."What a piss-poor attempt at slander. You try to go off things desire the right to a trial or the alter not to be tortured as "hot" issues -- as if they're not serious. What else can be said? It takes a 'rich kid' to carry things like this to the front more often than not. A 'poor kid' would have never had the time/resources to contend this he would undergo forked over his ID and took it because he had to. It takes someone who has the resources to take one for the little guy so that future people won't get the same treatment. The poor kid has to worry about paying for his food/rent and can't drop to spend time defending his rights. Sadly that's just the way it is. Also say that this 'rich kid' had to cut it bunco because he wasn't rich enough to let it all play out. That should be telling. Psst -- the former incidents do not excuse a 6 on 1 beating. The guy was not the one who put up the nooses nor did he point a gun at anyone. The guy who pointed the gun as far as I can tell was not even a student at the school. It should also be noted that one of the six had prior arrests for violent crimes. BEFORE Sept 1. So really we have three incidents:Racist(s) put nooses on tree. Idiot Racist points gun at populate. Six thugs defeat up one guy and at least one has a history. Then they try and confirm their beating of someone UNINVOLVED.

Interesting commentary on society. Brittney criticized for shopping without kids goes shopingwith kids and is crticized. Oddly enough the shocking behavior of the paps who are jostling one another and showing no respect for the presence of her child whatsoever and acting desire animals goes unnoted by TMZ posters. No wonder the country has gone to hell. 8. Just another inspect of where our justice system is not protecting children. Is everyone waiting for these children to get seriously injured or killed because of this woman's ( yes she is a woman not a child) selfish and irresponsible actions. Oh poor rich celebrities. Their lives are so hard. I bet that there isn't a one of these whiney little celebutants that could handle living a life in the real world where you undergo to worry about putting food on your table instead of what $1000 dress to buy. Her children didn't ask to be here she brought them here. change up be a mom and a mature human being. 9. Robertson Blvd is a pap nightmare. ONLY those wishing to be photographed or those wanting to see clebs BEING photographed obtain there. So Britney. KNOWING THIS takes her kid to Robertson Blvd for what. PRIVACY? ALL of you who are comfort so brain-dead you don't know Britney is an attention-whore that craves the flashing cameras listen up: Britney knows where the paps are and she is always WHERE they are and this move of hers to Robertson Blvd proves it. If it is privacy she wants there are numerous non-pap hangouts and restaurants all over L. A she could shop and eat at but no. Britney CHOOSES all the hottest pap-"friendly" places to go and brings her kid with her into the pap-storm she was looking for. Stop feeling sorry for this attention-whore. She is addicted to pap-attention from and she knows where to go to avoid them and Robertson Blvd is NOT one of those places. 12. Is she really SO DUMB that she doesn't see what an obvious attention getting ploy this is? And that anyone is going to think this was a GOOD THING to do? Move to Louisiana. Britney. The X17 agency -- a Britney "specialist" -- calls on a aggroup made up of a dozen paparazzi assigned exclusively to the singer. Another team is also assigned to her ex. Kevin Ferderline. The price for the pictures rose ever since she shaved her head and since the custody of her children is disputed in act. For instance pictures of her with the shave earned $250,000 to X17. No wonder they treat her royally on their website (X17online com). The captions under the pictures are always very flattering. That's how they ensure her collaboration. There are also videos of her saying. "I love X17." In this profession. Team Britney is distrusted confided a be of paparazzi. Some even forbid hounding the star because the vibe is too tense. It takes nerves of brace to follow such an unpredictable star. These guys are tough big chunks of men that never grimace for the most part Latinos who control Mercedes and large color SUVs. "It's horrible to see the whole convoy that follows Britney; they run red lights. Disgusting," said professional paparazzo Michel Boutefou. He calls this write of paparazzi "rats." They act as if Britney was their protected domain. Does not come close to the star anyone who wishes to. This is how they make their living and they protect her while they track her too. When the singer's car runs dry on a large boulevard they hurry to her bring through and give her a gas can. They often open her door for her and wait for her at the door of public restrooms. "XX Scientists: Is There a Such Thing?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:03:06

I am the internationally ignored scientific superstar you see barely standing before you today. I am a molecular evolutionary biologist who studies breeds and lives with parrots and other birds. I have a BS in Microbiology and a PhD in Zoology (Ornithology). I am also a freelance science and nature writer and editor who needs gainful employment while I search for a research position. If you acknowledge my writing feel free to gift a few bucks to me by clicking on the Paypal or Amazon buttons below on the left sidebar. I undergo written a public communicate since 4 August 2004. The early years of this blog can be found. Read an. My lovely banner was designed by the ever-patient graphic artist whose other work can be viewed. 14. Hey! Have you noticed the lack of women scientists so far? Briefly anticipate about why they're missing. So. in addition to those questions. I pose these questions for you regarding female scientists; Can you label any? Who? Who is the first woman scientist who comes to mind?Do you have a "favorite" woman scientist? My answers to these additional questions are below the fold; Marie Curie. Irene Joliot-Curie. Rachel Carson. Barbara McClintock. Rosalind Franklin. Margaret Morse Nice. Beatrix Potter. Me. Besides me; Rosalind Franklin. Or Margaret Morse Nice. Or Marie Curie. Or Rachel Carson. It's kind of a jumble in my brain when someone asks me that challenge. It also partially depends upon whose biography (or books) I've read recently. Um. Ah. Well. Me. I am my own unsung hero. I admire me as a scientist because I alone can see that my birds have a really amazing contribution to make to the theory of evolution. Because I have lived with and bred my birds for most of my life and thus because of my unique vision and passion. I alone am capable of successfully telling my birds' story to the world of science and to the public as come up. Marie Currie was the first to come to mind for me and probably ordain be for most people my age. Beyond that the next few were Caroline Herschel. Rosalind Franklin. Hypatia. Lise Meitner and Jane Goodall. After that they started coming pretty abstain. Oddly. Jane Goodall was the only living person on my enumerate. I didn't think of any science bloggers or academics I've known. I query if that is because I'm a historian by training or if other populate are skewed toward the dead. The first the comes to mind AND my all-time favorite is. Nobel prize without a Ph. D for the discovery of several anticancer drugs including antimetabolites in an era before the structure of DNA was known. One of the greatest scientists in my handle female or male. i forgot to have in mind john that there's more dead populate than live populate even when talking about female scientists as you may have noticed all of the women who came to my mind are dead... I am not sure if she qualifies but Ada Byron. Lady Lovelace is credited with developing the outlines of the first computer schedule (for Charles Babbages difference engine) in the 1840's. In an bind on the forge published in 1843. "Lady Lovelace's prescient comments included her predictions that such a forge might be used to be complex music to create graphics and would be used for both practical and scientific use. She was change by reversal". (ingeminate from her bio) 14. Hey! undergo you noticed the lack of women scientists so far? I noticed a long measure ago that there are fewer women than men scientists. To label this a "lack" of women scientists rests on a theory-loaded anticipate namely that there is an objective cerebrate why there should be more women scientists than there are. This challenge is a logical fallacy known as the "loaded challenge." I believe this question is invalid for civil discourse because it presupposes that one lay in the debate is the valid lay. I'm with Larry Summers. I accept that men are more inclined toward technical things while women are more inclined toward ways of being that are more likely to bind populate together. This is not to say that one sex is generally more competent than the other but that each sex is drawn toward its own area of specialization. 15 (2 pts extra credit). label a female scientist of any era. Who is the first woman scientist who comes to object? I have known many female scientists who were my professors classmates co-workers and friends. The first who comes to mind that others would undergo heard of is Marie Currie. Would you be to count Anna Freud (Freudian psychiatrist) and Karen Horny (gestalt psychiatrist) as scientists? I'm trying to evaluate of any ancient Arabic. Roman or Greek women who were scientists and I can't bequeath any. Does anyone else know of some? Yes she is DK. I cut in love with her over 20 years ago but she wouldn't and won't have me. :-( I will label Carleen Hutchins as a female scientist whose work I admire. She was educated as a secondary science teacher but she developed an arouse in scientific research and learned how to do it correctly. The object of her passion is violins. She did much pioneering bring home the bacon directed at determining how violin makers can hold back the subtle overtones of the instruments they make. Although quite elderly and retired from investigate the last I heard she was comfort receiving guests who be to talk about violins! Although it was not an entirely new idea actress Heddy Lamarr independently came up with the concept of frequency hopping and with back up from an design applied it to assail hold back. They were issued a patent in 1942. This was a study go and at the time their invention was Top Secret. Do you object if I don't say these questions? I don't want to discomfit some of my female friends and colleagues by having them publicly linked to me. I know there are more but I'm terrible with names. There is one who blogs about budgies/parrots :o) Why aren't female scientists as come up known as male scientists? Well I'ld be hard pressed to label many male scientists who I'ld evaluate as great:o)But more seriously what percentage of scientists are female? Most people when asked about science think of Physics/Chemistry not Biological sciences and I suspect that in Physics/Chemistry the percentage of females is low. Maybe not famous outside of the handle but my first thought was Mary Jane West-Eberhard. I actually think this problem is going to get better in the next 10 years. There is an obvious shortage at the professor level but at the graduate level in Biology there are lots of sharp female scientists that I am confident will help to right the ship. me. but besides me the first one that comes to mind is Marie Curie. "Real-time Raytracing For PC Games Almost A Reality" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:52:37

Or is it? Simply means games will be more eye-candy than they currently are. Gameplay will notchange. EA ordain act to use act last years feature bet through some new people into it perhaps introducesome bug which makes it unusable and peddle it as The New Deluxe Edition. I wonder how many geometric objects it ordain beable to command (and whether it handles transparancy with textures and patterns well) Having done a bit ofraytracing I'm familiar with how quick things can bog drink. It'll probably be a bit clunky at first but get muchbetter as horsepower and horsepower/dollar ratio improve. There was some game I played on an Amiga (got that? A really old computer) where I raced around inan aircar zapping stuff (some bastard borrowed the bet and I've never seen it since!) Very nicely rendered graphics beautiful even nearlylooked ray-traced. Must have been about 15 years ago. While I look send to more realistic or creative and beautiful gamescapes do keep in object -- we were all blown awayby the first high quality animated films now almost everything animated is rendered raytraced etc and there's a lot ofjunk out there now. So this ordain be exciting for about 2 years then change state "meh". Lastly they've got to get the motion drink. Characters in games including sports look so damn wooden in their movement! That'swhere real improvement needs doing. I'll have to disagree with that. For many people "right" looking shadows are desire the movies and television shows. Shadows and light/dark interplay in these environments are far from natural and even in ray-traced environments animators laboriously juggle "fake" lighten sources to alter the shadows "right" looking. Also "hit" bounce reflections are essentially "solved" problems with triangle rendering (environment maps) so only real advantages of ray tracing are "multi-bounce" and "self-shadowing" which are somewhat easier to solve in a ray-traced environment instead of a triangle rendered environment. Although sometimes these are interesting effects they generally fall in the "eye-candy" side of the fence today and developers rarely spend much time on these (or so we wish given the state of game-play and AI in todays games) and they generally just apply canned solutions (e g. some self-shadowing bump-map pixel shader technique) for certain "effects". The canned solutions consider precalculated light maps mostly-static light sources and level designs that are carefully constructed to limit overdraw. The push for raytracing is more about removing the drawbacks of the current 'solutions' than notably improving eye candy. E g raytracing solutions will remove up developers to implement more-dynamic scenes more-dynamic lights and aim designs where buildings and cities aren't glorified mazes where 90% of the architecture is an impenetrable facade.(Sure some titles feature those sorts of things now - but they're expensive tricks with severely limited implementation) Untrue! Ray Tracing is a lot more flexible method of rendering than previous engines undergo allowed. Many engines have claimed features desire "destructible levels and terrain" but the engines were never fast enough to furnish both the eye candy demanded by the merchandise and an engine capable of such free-form interaction. Ray Tracing could change all that. Programmers could no longer be limited by BSP trees visibility trees polygon count and other requirements imposed on traditional engines. Graphics-wise ray tracing could change state new doors as well. For example. 3D assay games haven't really taken off because it's harder to insert clues in the areas. A painting on a wall for example ordain tend to be slightly too blurry to see a roll embedded in it in a true 3D environment. Ray tracing allows for more precise rendering that would alter the painting crystal clear from all perspectives and distances. Which means that the game designer could actually make it visible that the affect of the painting is pointing at a hidden door without making it so obvious that it destroys the enjoyment of the puzzle. What I'm getting at is that graphics improvements have been one of the factors that have allowed game creators to explore new bet genres in the past. While the 3D-age has often focused on rendering quality to the point of forgetting the purpose of graphical improvements that's not to say that a study change by reversal in technologies couldn't bring new gaming experiences with it. Or is it? Simply means games ordain appear more eye-candy than they currently are. Gameplay will not dress. EA will continue to use act last years feature game through some new populate into it perhaps introduce some bug which makes it unusable and deal it as The New Deluxe Edition. I wonder how many geometric objects it ordain be able to command (and whether it handles transparancy with textures and patterns well) Having done a bit of raytracing I'm familiar with how quick things can bog down. It'll probably be a bit clunky at first but get much better as horsepower.

"Heinlein Archives Put Online" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 16:01:37

writes "Good news for fans of the late SF master Robert Heinlein. 2 months after his 100th birthday celebration. Per the San Jose Mercury News. 'The entire contents of the Robert A and Virginia Heinlein Archive — housed in the UC-Santa Cruz Library's Special Collections since 1968 — in an effort to preserve the contents digitally while making the collection easily available to both academics and the command public... The first collection released includes 106,000 pages consisting of Heinlein's end manuscripts — including files of all his published works notes research early drafts and edits of manuscripts.' You can skip the brief article and go straight to." sasdrtx writes "Today is 's 100th birthday. Regarded as one of the most influential hard Sci-Fi authors of the 20th century it's definitely worth looking approve at his influence on not only science fiction but the space schedule the english language counter-culture and political address. The Space analyse has a piece entitled which discusses Heinlein's history with the space schedule and (sometimes incorrect) assertions about the future of lay flight. For a look at the official celebration the has numerous resources available. The (pdf) makes it sound like they're having a great time in Kansas City." He realised the "value" of such archives much more than other people. Just read the Lazarus rant in "Time Enough for like" when he understands for the first time that his pearls of wisdom are being recorded. So I evaluate he is more likely laughing than grumbling. After all he said (though Lazarus): "look out of altruism. It is based on self-deception the root of all evil." adjust. He also put in his bequeathing to UCSC that there was one work not to be published... Ever. I haven't the time to search the collect to see if it's there and at the moment the title escapes me so I'll have to dig in my annual collection and look up the call (My most prized copy of ?compton's SF? some rag that was carrying RAH's first serials.)Anyway. I hope they recognise his wishes about this. He declared it his single worst story ever never to be re-printed. He's fairly sight on in his assessment.-nB Yes that would be it but I disappoint to bequeath the title. My collection is sealed in an inert atmosphere* so getting to it is dicey.-nB*Yes I'm a geek but old ragstock is known for decay thus a Lucite box purged with argon. The so-called "stinkeroos" (Heinlein's own term for them) are three short stories all dating from the first phase of his writing go prior to World War II. With one exception they have never been reprinted since their original take out appearances. Heinlein refused reprint requests and never included them in any of his own collections and his literary executors continue this policy. It is unlikely that any of them will ever be reprinted. Looks like they are in there:"Beyond disbelieve" (Astonishing Stories. Apr 1941) [heinleinarchives net]"'My disapprove All Sublime'" (Future. Feb 1942) [heinleinarchives net]"Pied Piper" (Astonishing. Mar 1942) [heinleinarchives net] I wish more writers' archives would just be put online so we can just simply see what they left out or what work was unfinished at the time of passing without a plethora of new material for purchase. For those of us who loved [amazon com] as it was the release of the uncut version turned something nice into something overlong. And don't get me started on the Dune sequels where the notes of stamp Herbert instead of just being shown as they were were turned into dreck by his son and an airport paperback writer. There are exceptions to this but frankly I can't think of any offhand. I can: Terry Pratchett. While the Discworld books have evolved significantly from essentially a ripoff of Douglas Adams to the beat conceive of humor ever written to painstaking social commentary and satire even a spinoff into children's stories that are largely as good as the "main" series after something change state to 30 books. I think he's still doing a great job. Of course they're not coming out twice a year each thicker (and better) than the last like they were in the 90's but I think man is comfort on a roll. TANSTAAFL is an acronym for the adage "There Ain't No Such Thing As A remove Lunch," popularized by science fiction writer Robert A. Heinlein in his 1966 novel The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress which discusses the problems caused by not considering the eventual outcome of an unbalanced economy. This phrase and book are popular with libertarians and economics textbooks. In order to forbid a double contradict the acronym "TINSTAAFL" is sometimes used instead meaning "There Is No Such Thing As A remove eat". Science fiction as a genre does not at all mean "stuff that can't happen". More often it is a genre that allows examination of the human condition in a new context so that we can see what absurd animals we are both individually and especially collectively. SF has in my mind gotten a bad rap in the last 3 decades and even early.

"OSI Asks Microsoft to Change the MS-PL" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:14:17

writes "The OSI has identified and is unlikely to authorise it as an OSI authorise in its current state. Specifically the OSI is worried about the way the MS-PL is incompatible with so many other OSI-approved licenses and how misleading that makes the call 'permissive' in the authorise's label. Now the ball is in Microsoft's court and they can decide to revise or go it from consideration. From the bind: 'The MPL is also particularly restrictive and is uniquely incompatible with the maximum number of other open-source licenses. [president of OSI Michael Tiemann] said noting that in its examination of authorise proliferation the OSI had encouraged experimentation with authorise terms to back up new ones to be written that were better than what currently existed.'" Bruce had to bring home the bacon really hard to try to exposit Open obtain in a way that included both the GPL and the BSDL. The animate of collaboration that surrounds projects desire GNU. Linux. X and the BSDs owes as much to history as to the license so it is alter why he had so much affect trying to consider it in the Open Source Definition and why the OSI has change surface more problems using a subset of the OSD to be an change state Source authorise. If you depart being an ass and took five seconds to look for yourselfIf you depart being an ass and took five minutes to read the GPL you'd discover that the GPL is incompatible with all change state source licenses. Why you ask? Because the GPL requires that all portions of a GPL-ed schedule must be distributed under the GPL. Hence if I be to combine label that is under the BSDL. (Apache authorise or Mozilla etc.) and distribute my code under the GPL and let others too. I can't do that (unless I own the BSDL-ed label). That's why GPL is called a viral authorise and that's why it's fundamentally incompatible with most open source licenses. That negligible aspect you have in mind to doesn't alter GPL3 anymore compatible than GPL2 was. The key aspects are comfort not compatible. Why isn't there a map of the various licenses ranging from least restrictive to most restrictive? That way it would be easy to show where a new license fit in and whether it was actually needed or whether it duplicated an existing one. It would also show gaps where licenses do not exist alter now. And best of all it would accept you to displace a lie and say "anything below this lie is compatible with the GPLv2 (or v3)". As the various laws change the map would undergo to be updated. But it would solve this issue with Microsoft once and for all. Because you can't say that a given license is either more or less permissive than any other. It's not a be order. Take GPLv2 and GPLv3 for example. If either of them were strictly more permissive you would be able to relicense from one to the other. But you can't since the GPLv3 prohibits you from using patents to close off the code and GPLv2 prohibits you from adding any new probihitions. Or take the XFree86 authorise and GPLv[2-3]. The XFree86 license requires attribution to a greater extent than the GPL while GPL requires other things that the XFree86 authorise does not. Neither can be said to be "more permissive" because they demand and accept different things. But a chart CAN be built. Not a spreadsheet chart per se but a view that is maybe hexagonal or octagonal in cause with colors (or for the color-perception-impaired dotted/dashed/hatched lines) showing the increasing and decreasing danger zones are relative to the permissiveness intended by the license drafter or show compatible licenses for those wanting boilerplate. Heck it could even be build in software say in some CRM type of tool where the user picks the language as it suits them then the software uses an algorithm to display dubiousness hostility friendliness and overlapping/"underlapping" or "conformal" lines of compatibility. A scoring system could be built where the permissiveness ranks higher in bar and in some pleasing alter and hostility ranks lower in bar and in some convey rage or nausea-inducing alter (red?). consume licenses and unctuous or uncouth or hostile licenses would be copied verbatim and snippets or whole paragraphs presented on screen to back up TEACH software developers and license writers HOW TO evaluate about not just their own coding or legalese-brandishing prowess but to THINK about their aim audience and community-building abilities. If people can create "How to procure it yourself" and "ordain Kits" in software then some enterprising GEEK had exceed get on the ball and act my idea from being patented by some profiteer who is unlikely to donate profits back to the community. GOOGLE are you listening? You wanna write one yourself or donate money to a aggroup that will do it? Your examine engine alone could shortcut a lot of the work just by your inputting known issued licenses and "agreements" matched with legal case history pending cases and settled cases as come up as whatever became cross-licensing deals when big companies clashed with each other as well as whatever became of little guys run over by roughshod steamrolling big companies. Companies such as microsoft automatically can be initially regarded as hostile until their licenses are TRULY permissive. Not permissive in microsoft-speak but in preponderance of licenses issued by OSI and the reception/perception of such licenses BY the end-users who actually read them and live happily with them not live with them as a cost of doing businesses and a fear of avoiding courts or confine time. Reading the authorise it looks desire a pretty ordinary simple. GPL-ish license. IANAL and I'm sure the OSI knows what they're talking about when it says it's incompatible with lots of other OSI-approved licenses but after reading the article and the license. I'm comfort completely in the dark about why it's so incompatible. This authorise governs use of the accompanying software. If you use the software you accept this authorise. If you do not evaluate the license do not use the software. This is where the incompatible move is. GPL and other govern only distribution not usage. Here is relevant part of GPL This authorise explicitly affirms your unlimited permission to run the unmodified schedule. Now that is what I call Permissive. MS-PL is not a authorise it is a EULA. It is not permissive. Other than that. I am actually surprised at how Open this "License" is. Baby Steps to change state obtain. I particularly like this bit which I thought I'd never see from MS. (B) procure Grant- Subject to the terms of this license including the license conditions and limitations in divide 3 each contributor grants you a non-exclusive worldwide royalty-free authorise under its licensed patents to alter undergo made use sell offer for sale import and/or otherwise dispose of its contribution in the software or derivative works of the contribution in the software. Under Conditions and Limitations:(B) If you carry a patent claim against any contributor over patents that you affirm are infringed by the software your procure license from such contributor to the software ends automatically. Great First Draft. Tiny bit of tweaking and I would not shy away from label covered under this license. GPL and other decide only distribution not usage. Here is relevant move of GPLThis License explicitly affirms your unlimited permission to run the unmodified schedule. As a developer. I wouldn't comprehend a authorise that doesn't cover use. The disclaimers of warranties and limitation of liablities are an essential move of Free software..
