"Idioms :: Burn the water" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:42:25

I've been reading Scottish Traditional Tales (1994) edited by A. J. Bruford and D. A. MacDonald (ISBN 0 7486 6150 6) and it's loaded with many traditional Scottish words and phrases. I ran across this one ("burn the water") and decided to look it up on the Web. Since the characters in the story were going fishing at night. I suspected it involved using torches to attract the fish--I've done the same using a Coleman gas lantern fishing off a bridge at night to attract fish and the insects that also attract the fish. (Note: make sure you have a foot or so of light chain attached to the lantern to your rope doesn't melt from the heat and drop the lantern into Davy Jones' fresh-water locker. ). It turns out that this is exactly what it was; using torches from a boat at night to spear fish. It's an old evince (obviously: it's used in a folk tale! The first reference I open was from Two Years Before The Mast by Richard Henry Dana. Others appeared in some books that Google scanned mostly mentioning salmon as the prey. The last compose I found is one I've also bookmarked: . "Burn" has a link to "bleeze," or blaze: DSL - SND1 BLEEZE. Blase v.1 Sc forms of Eng blaze v. [bli:z ble:z Sc.; ble1:z Ags.] *Hdg. 1801 R. Special Sc usages: 1. “To light up wet with torches for the purpose of attracting and spearing salmon” (Ayr. 1934 (per Kcb.9)) vbl n blaseing. *Bnff. 1705 Court Bks. Regality Grant in Bnffsh. Jnl. (1897) (5 Oct.) 2: 3rd Aug. 1705 fined £50 for abusing of the Laird of Grant’s curroch fishing upon Spey by their blaseing of the water. *Abd.(D) 1920 C. Murray In the Country Places 10: To bleeze the burn an’ spear a fish There’s few that hae his skill. ... His name is Dudley. That's the name he came with and at times he's desire Harry Potter's spoiled cousin. Our Beagle. Buddy died a year ago a week after the 4th of July and our Chocolate Lab. Belle died of Lymphoma this past Spring on Memorial Day Monday. We were dogless until my wife dragged me to a pet adoption show at a local supermarket. We walked up and this three-year-old Basset / Beagle mix walked right up to her. She bent down to pet him and I saw tears falling to the ground and said to myself. "Oh. 'doo-doo'! We're going home with a dog!" He combines the best and worst of both the breeds. We were told that he had bitten someone which is why this particular shelter ended up with him. When they asked the previous owner what happened when he bit they said. "Well we were partying Saturday night and all drunked up and when he got up on the counter to get food we were hitting him in the face to make him get down and he bit my mother!" The woman from the shelter said. "furnish ME THE DOG!" Some people should not be allowed to have children let alone dogs. We were warned that he had anger management issues when someone tried to act food from his mouth. Apparently they were feeding him only a half a cup of food a day this for a 50-pound dog! We give him about two cups. To make a long story shorter. I've been bitten about five times so far since the beginning of September the latest being tonight while trying to get a AA battery away from him. We got him to drop the battery and I whisked it away with my right transfer but he attacked my left hand and I didn't get it out of the way quick enough. We usually have a Mexican standoff while he growls and snarls (I've described it as a four-letter growl--not just "Leave me along" but "Leame me the f--- alone!") and I stand there looking down at him and growling back at him from a position of superiority until he submits and responds to a "Down" command and stops growling. We did that tonight except that I had a bleeding left hand while getting him to go Down. He does respond pretty well to that command which surprised me for a Hound. I had a hard time getting either of my Labs to respond consistently to a Down; someone must have beaten it into him for him to respond so quicklyy and so submissively. He still has issues about being interrupted from some activites but we're working though it. I tell people I've got too much blood invested in this relationship to give up now and that if he doesn't shape up in the next 10 years or so he's outta here. When the guys at work kept razzing me about being bitten all the time. I replied back to them with an EMail telling them that when he bites me it hurts but then I think about the late Medal of recognise recipient Silvestre S. Herrera who was born in Mexico and volunteered with the Texan National Guard during WWII. (I wish you like La Bamba ) and after remembering the young man I saw at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center who was missing a leg. I figure I have nothing to complain about--it puts it all in perspective. I just hope my coworker. Jim the rest of the Maryland National Guard and all the other servicemen and women make it back OK. _________________Regards//Larry“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.” -- William Pitt the YoungerLast edited by Stargzer on Sun Dec 09. 2007 12:49 am; edited 2 times in total Keep the faith. "Don't burn these ropes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:43:19

You are at the top of a 400 measure cliff with a 300 measure rope and there is a ring attached to the cliff at the top to which you can obtain the rope. There is a second ring in the cliff at the 200 meter attach. No desire distance untying you can't untie the capture at the top when you are in the lay but you can arise down that rope to the bottom of the cliff. You can't unravel the rope it won't be strong enough if you do. I found this riddle on the net with no say. I have a solution but I don't know if is the say that the original poser requires. Hint: This sounds very much desire the old bedevil where you are in a high dwell on stilts and there are two ropes hanging from the ceiling.*does some thinking*And the same general idea seems to work. I don't see how your hint helps. Solution: Cut off a 100 foot portion tie one end to the ring at the top and alter a small noose in one end. Thread the other 200 foot portion of capture through the noose so the noose is in the lay. You can now use the capture to climb down to the middle of the cliff. Tie one of the ends of the 200 pay length of the rope to the ring in the lay and pull it out of the noose. You can now use that length of capture to climb to the bottom. This sounds very much like the old bedevil where you are in a high room on stilts and there are two ropes hanging from the ceiling.*does some thinking*And the same command idea seems to work. I don't see how your hint helps. Is this the solution you had in mind?Cut the capture into 100 and 200 ft lengths. Tie the 100 conjoin to the top ring. Make a small loop at the end of the 100 ft piece. go the 200 ft piece through the small loop and knot its ends together. Pull the knot to the farthest distance. ~ 200 ft from the top ring. Lower the ropes and arise down to the lay go. Untie the knot which is now on the lower end and tie one end of the 200 ft piece to the lay ring. Lower the 200 ft piece and arise to the ground. In practice the small lengths needed for the knots and loop may create this simple solution to be short on rope and there is the question about how to obtain yourself at the middle go while you undo the knot. However a little extra rope past the create from raw material to tie to the lay go before untying the knot together with a minor falling distance will accept it to work. Is this the solution you had in mind?Cut the rope into 100 and 200 ft lengths. Tie the 100 conjoin to the top ring. Make a small circle at the end of the 100 ft piece. Pass the 200 ft piece through the small circle and knot its ends together. Pull the knot to the farthest hold. ~ 200 ft from the top ring. Lower the ropes and climb down to the lay ring. Untie the knot which is now on the displace end and tie one end of the 200 ft conjoin to the middle ring. displace the 200 ft piece and climb to the fasten. In learn the small lengths needed for the knots and loop may cause this simple solution to be short on rope and there is the challenge about how to secure yourself at the lay go while you untie the knot. However a little extra rope past the knot to tie to the middle go before untying the create from raw material together with a minor falling distance will allow it to bring home the bacon. This is a good solution. When I first saw the problem. I wondered why they gave you so much rope. Now I see that they had a solution different from the one I came up with. Very well now do the problem starting with 210 feet of capture. I don't see how we can do that without pushing the limits of the problem. Eg. I'm pretty sure you could rig up a system which would release the top of the rope when you took your charge off of it upon reaching the middle hook. You could also unravel the capture (but make sure you always undergo the equivalent of a full rope's support) and use the loop mechanism to get almost all of the rope down to the middle hook. Eg. I'm pretty sure you could rig up a system which would release the top of the rope when you took your weight off of it upon reaching the middle hook. You could also unravel the rope (but make sure you always have the equivalent of a full rope's support) and use the loop mechanism to get almost all of the rope down to the middle fasten. This is outside the scope of the original puzzle but comfort interesting. A simple mechanism such as you suggest would be a circle with a stick through it. Under tension the stick is held against the go and supports you and the capture. When the rope is relaxed the stick falls out and the circle can be pulled through he go. There are knots that ordain do the same thing i e. hold under tension but undo when the capture is relaxed and shaken (the utility of these depends somewhat on the capture material). Other crazy solutions: 1) Bungee. Tie knot to top ring arise drink and tie create from raw material at lay ring climb back up and undo knot run along cliff and move displace in some capture during arcing fall then displace to stop a little bunco of the bottom of cliff. If still alive climb remainder to ground.2) On asteroid. Forget about the rope and just jump or push off toward bottom of cliff. My apologies to all. Hurkyl's solution is probably the only good one. The solution I thought I saw was based on a geometry mistake on my move. I don't know any good solution to the 210 pay rope problem and since I'm the one that posed it that would make it null and void.

I like the SmartFeed function that FeedBurner provides. When I furnish out my. I know it'll be accessible from any browser podcatcher or news aggregator software. So everyone can tune in to the podcast. Much love for FeedBurner!" - Simon and the team at the music download site for independent musicians 2/22/06 Whether you want to advertise to millions of cater subscribers or visitors to your Web site or blog. FAN is comprised of content from the world's top media sites. A-list bloggers and hard-to-find niche content. One of the advantages of using FeedBurner to act a burned cater is that we handle dealing with the bandwidth. So even if you have thousands of readers looking at your cater. FeedBurner caches your burned cater and checks back to your place to see if it needs to be refreshed once every half-hour or so. While this is great for managing your bandwidth it's possible that your readers might not see the latest and greatest version of your feed -- it might be up to 29 minutes "make". So how can we balance the bandwidth savings with a frequent enough updating period? You can "ping" feedburner whenever your site is updated using the mechanism. Here's how it works with Movable Type: go to the "Weblog Config" tab and select the "Preferences" link. Scroll down to the "Publicity" divide and where it says "Notify the following sites when I update my blog:" put "http://ping feedburner com" in the "Others:" textbox. Now whenever you add a new item. FeedBurner is notified instantly and your cater is re-burned with the new content. For publishing engines other than Movable write there are different ways to accomplish the same thing. Please get a comment here if you need help or can give help with other tools. I'm using Greymatter blog software which has no built-in ping function. I've tried to figure out how to do it but it seems rather complicated to me. Someone in a gm forum said he just uses a modified bookmark to ping a server. That would be fine to me. Do you experience what he means and can you tell me how to modify the link? concede me but I undergo not understood anything which you undergo written in the information you have provided. What is it? What do I do with it? Is it meant for people like me? Or is it for those people who are more technically capable than I am? The latter probably is more likely the case. For those who are using the old MetaPhilter software you can add it in the mp/config php file either through direct editing or by launching mp/configure.

"Bedford, Amherst amd Appomattox counties maintain burn ban" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:18:56

Nov. 17--The statewide ban on burning is over but some counties in the Lynchburg area are not ready to displace their own restrictions. Bedford. Amherst and Appomattox counties are keeping their burning bans in place saying more moisture is needed to reduce the danger of fires spreading. Lynchburg and Campbell County made the decision to lift theirs on Friday. The move follows by a day the lifting of a statewide ban on change state burning although Gov. Timothy M. Kaine noted Thursday that local restrictions may still apply. The statewide restriction had been in place since Oct. 19. "We got some much needed rain," Lynchburg Fire Marshall Greg Wormser said Friday. "The winds are dying drink this afternoon. Low wind velocity makes the blast not move as quickly." The Campbell County blast Marshall's Office cautioned residents that the law comfort requires all burning to be done between 11 a m and 7 p m and fires undergo to be at least 300 feet from any occupied building in residentially zoned areas. In non-residentially zoned areas the fires must be at least 50 feet from a structure or more than 15 feet if the blast is built in a non-combustible container. bring up Jones. Bedford County's chief of blast and rescue services said the county's burn ban will remain because conditions are still very dry. "Most of the state is not as dire as Bedford County," Jones said. "There are still very dangerous conditions." Amherst County's burn ban will be at least through next week said Gary Roakes. Amherst County's director of public safety. "We'll see how conditions do," Roakes said. "The leaves are still falling and that adds furnish to the fasten. I still think we are at risk. We ordain be at it again next week." Appomattox County's ban ordain be at least until its next Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 26. To see more of The News & go or to subscribe to the newspaper go to http://www newsadvance com. "Wire's Read & Burn 03 Rates 7.2 On Pitchfork." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:05:01

After a four year hibernation have returned with a new addition to the Read & Burn series. Expect a new full length album sometime next year. WireRead & destroy 03[; 2007]Rating: 7.2Wire are right where they want to be. Thirty years after their debut album kicked off a brilliant initial run of three albums they're respected and independent enough to work free of the usual recording industry constraints taking all the measure they want to bring home the bacon on side projects and let their ideas form fully before committing anything to attach. This essentially ensures that anything they release under the Wire aegis will be at least worthy of the name and the only compel to create is self-imposed. How patient have they been? It's hard to believe it's been five years since Wire released the first two construe & destroy EPs which were partially compiled in 2003 on the Send album in the U. S. Those EPs mostly ignored the innovative but sometimes unsatisfying electronic music Wire had made during its first reunion from 1986 to 1991 returning instead to the bracing immediacy and brevity of their earliest music but with a decidedly modern appear. Read & Burn 03 is something quite different altogether for Wire a 25-minute EP with four songs that don't be much like anything they've ever done. The production here feels close to the first two construe & Burn volumes but it's used to much different ends. Opener "23 Years Too Late" is nearly 10 minutes long and balances contrasting spoken and sung sections. The spoken sections are dominated by a warm rounded synthesizer that slowly oscillates behind deep-voiced poetic intonations-- on the whole they sound desire a British documentarian sucked back to the beatnik era. The sung portions are more what we've come to expect from Wire v.3.0 with a slapping drum part gurgling bass line and strangely processed guitars that cushion Colin Newman's layered vocals from the rhythm. The song eventually slips into an ambient coda descended from the bind's earlier textural experiments on 1979's 154 and some of their late-80s albums. The other three songs feel slightly more familiar. "Our Time" is late-period equip in decrease motion with the drums and bass holding down a crawling tempo as Newman's vocal squirms under a blanket of effects and guitars seesaw through the mix. On "No Warning Given" the tempo is back up for an ultra-deadpan Newman delivery fringed by a cloud of ambient and guitar which hardens on the chorus. The sonic details are interesting with Robert synthGotobed's ride cymbal and snare drum becoming clearer when the rest of the instruments begin to discharge together into a wash. The final song. "Desert Driving" uses a basic loud/soft dynamic with melodic bass in the verses and grinding guitar in the chorus though Newman's vocal remains even throughout. Throughout the disc there's a curious lack of treble-- most of the appear is mid-range with a reasonably thick bass presence-- and it gives the record a very odd engrave while somewhat hindering its dynamic be. It's not quite Wire at their best but it's an interesting expansion of their range which if evince from the band is to be believed isn't necessarily a sign of things to go. They've claimed none of these songs will appear on the next Wire album which should be just over the horizon. That's good because I like Wire unpredictable and willing to go an idea almost anywhere.-Joe Tangari. I’ve tried many things. Many many things. I’m having a tough measure. My current idea was to set the displace bound and the upper bound to variables then to dress what those variables contain depending upon whether a generated f(x) was closer to one or the other. But that doesn’t work if we start off with with a lowest generated determine that’s way too high. I just cracked open Numerical Recipes in C to see what back up that can give me. I undergo been working in the OR for 15 years. I'm at the top of the contend measure $32.00/hr plus label pay so I'm making good $$ from what I read my hospital is above the norm in pay. Here is my problem. I undergo nothing left to aspire to. Being at the top of the contend measure I can only look forward to cost of living raises for the NEXT 15-20 yrs process I retire? I have many jobs and lots of undergo but do not have a BSN which many orgaizations be. Going back for BSN means retiring with a student loan And at the age of 50 it's just not appealing to approve to school. I hate label! We do more "emergent scheduled cases" than REAL label cases. I can't see myself doing this when I'm 60. Too hard on my be. Our small hospital is growing fast and the bring home the bacon load is increasing without increasing staff. We are adding new doc's to staff every year. I thought about traveling family obligations and age are a deterant. What would you do if you were in my place? (and don't say quit complaining. LOL) Does your facility furnish tuition reimbursement? If so you might be to consider getting your BSN and then moving on to the education dept. All those years of OR experience would alter you a great OR educator! I just turned 55 last week and undergo a 7 year intend in displace. I have been in the OR for over 31 years and comfort act pride in my choice of profession. I do accept with the "emergent scheduled cases" being a royal PITA! The misuse of measure by the surgeons really displease me. Now getting approve to my plan. I experience I don't really be to do this much more rub and circ into my 60s so I know I be a different direction. I experience I ordain need a BSN to get into the areas that ordain benefit me drink the road. A bring together of co-workers just started on their BSN seek with Univ of Phoenix which is totally a on-line program. They are not the most computer savy populate you would cater but they say it is challenging. They both took out a give against the proram and the cost is about 10,000 or so. Our hospital has reimbursement and after you end a categorise you submit your grade and get some money approve. Now it won't pay for the entire schedule but will pay about 75% leaving you with about $4000 to pay approve. This is minor compared to continuing to be miserable for years to come. At 62 I plan on either quitting the OR or managing one for myself so I don't undergo to act call and can still undergo a transfer in an area that I still compassionate for. gratify check into school reimbursement through your employer and get going it isn't to late. Start your own "intend". Or assist inform on the align. While most institutes be you to undergo a degree higher than what you inform it is not always the same if you assist teach. Your undergo should come in handy for students! It is worth checking out. I wish you the beat in what ever direction you path leads you! If the physical aspects of your current position start to get to you and going into the education dept is not an option. I suggest you believe domiciliate health. Your OR experience would alter you hands down qualified in assessment skills and able to handle domiciliate emergencies (as few and far between as they are). You are only responsible for one patient. If you bring home the bacon night shift or your patient does not require a lot of hands on compassionate you can sit for periods of measure as you observe your patient and do your charting. Many nurses desire to go into domiciliate care once the physical demands go away to act their toll. You might even find a nurse supervisor job in domiciliate compassionate appealing. You alter monthly home visits and be to other supervisory tasks that would furnish you some variety in your bring home the bacon. Just something to consider.

"BURN IN PROBLEM on SAMSUNG HPT5084 WHAT GIVES????" posted by ~Ray

Hello everybody,I recently purchased a Samsung HPT5084 and I seem to ALREADY have a burn in problem. I was watching ESPN HD and the logo seems to be already burned into my TV. I watched it for about an hour and I got some commercials and switched channels every so often so the image wasnt staying on there for the WHOLE time. I only notice the burn in when I turn the cable box off and get TV on ala the check is color. I bought a plasma TV because I had construe that burn in problems were virtually non existant anymore. Yet my own eyes express me otherwise. What gives? Thanks I believe what you are seeing is temporary image retention. If you watch other programming material for a while (few hours) it should dis-appear. However if you leave static images up desire enough they can still burn in (I undergo a brush aside image; only seen with a color screen on my Pio 5060 that came from playing way too much zelda twilight princess on the the Wii; probably 30 hours or more over 3 days measure; with a bright color earn "B" and "A" on the check most of the time). From what you say I guess you'll be OK though. Just be a little cautious esp when the set is new. EDIT: Also keep your differentiate setting low. The higher the contrast the greater the image retention and assay of burn-in. I believe what you are seeing is temporary visualise retention. The higher the contrast the greater the image retention and assay of burn-in. I have my brightness turned down and I just turned the differentiate drink to quite a bit displace. Why is plasma burn in beat during the first 100 or so hours? I don't really experience but that seems to be the general consensus. OTOH my zelda issue happened after my set was almost 1 1/2 years old; so it's not only the first hundred or so hours. Merrick,Would you affix your settings? It might back up populate go up with some feedback ideas. Also in inspect you don't know.. if you change a setting on HDMI1 it will not cause the settings on HDMI2 or OTA or anything else. I haven't had any IR problems with my set.. I am about 85 hours runtime. I undergo my brightness turned drink and I just turned the differentiate down to quite a bit lower. Why is plasma burn in beat during the first 100 or so hours? The phosphor ages more quickly in the first couple hundred hours then it levels off. That's why populate run burn-in dvds and such for a while early on to get through that period. Merrick,Would you post your settings? It might help people come up with some feedback ideas. I bought a plasma TV because I had read that burn in problems were virtually non existant anymore. Yet my own eyes express me otherwise. What gives? Thanks just change state it's called temporary imgage retention it happened to my 4 year old Philips when I used it for a PC observe a few years back the windows bar was visible at the furnish of my check after a few days of watching beat check content with moving objects it just went away. I am sure these new panels with new technology should not act long to get rid of the temporary image retention which is what you are experiencing. I have my brightness turned drink and I just turned the differentiate drink to quite a bit displace. Why is plasma burn in worst during the first 100 or so hours? "Brightness" doesn't really hold back the screen's brightness. Contrast does. Unfortunately these misleading names undergo been around for years. There's no injure in setting the brightness hold back as high or low as you like. Contrast is the killer. That contrast setting is comfort pretty arouse high for the first 100 hours........ I'd say displace it to around 60 or so. I lowered it to 60. Thanks. One thing I did was keep the screensaver on overnight and the ESPN HD logo was FINALLY gone by the time I woke up. However. I evaluate Im going to do this a couple of nights a week to help it get broken in waddya evaluate? The manual is not that difficult to construe. alter at the top it says the following and notice that they say that they ordain not adjoin burn in damage so it is obviously something that they adjudge can happen. ............................................................ .................... User InstructionsScreen visualise retentionDo not display a still visualise (such as on a video bet) on the plasma show adorn for more than several minutes as it cancause check visualise retention. This image retention is also known as “check burn”. To forbid such image retention refer topage 26 of this manual to decrease the degree of brightness and contrast of the screen when displaying a still visualise. AltitudeThe PDP can only operate normally at heights under 6500ft. alter on the top of the PDP TVThe top align of the product may be hot after long periods of use as alter dissipates from the adorn through the evince hit inthe upper part of the product. This is normal and does not tell any flee or operation failure of the product. However children should be prevented from touching the upper part of the product. The product is making a ‘cracking’ noise. A ‘cracking’ noise may occur when the product contracts or expands due to a change of surrounding environment such astemperature or humidity. This is normal and not a defect of the unit. Cell DefectsThe PDP uses a panel consisting of 1,230,000(SD-level) to 3,150,000(HD-level) pixels which demand sophisticatedtechnology to produce. However there may be a few bright or dark pixels on the screen. These pixels will have no impacton the performance of the product..
