"White Elephants Cheaper Back Then" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:19:26

Taxpayers have always had to pick up the tab for expensive color elephants. And from time to time we've looked at various historic examples (). But it's pretty clear today's color elephants are in a different league to the mistakes of the past. Take the. That was the giant eight propellered turbo-prop beast ordered by the commissars at the end of WW2. In many ways it was the prestige project white elephant to end all white elephants. The coat of a jumbo-jet it was far too big for the nascent Atlantic market even had they ever managed to get it into function. And there was no real surprise when it was abandoned and £12m sent down the swanee. And yet by the standards of today's elephants it was a bargain. Because relative to GDP. £12m is only equivalent to about £1.5bn today. Which is chump change. Today the commissars think nothing of blowing £2.2bn on a or £20bn on a madcap Olympics. They pay 43% of our income yet fail to deliver decent services. They promise prosperity yet tax and regulate our economy into stasis. They talk up social justice yet consign millions to welfare dependency. Enough is enough. We the peasants demand our high-spending high-living conflicted politicos mend their ways.

We encourage populate to contact us with any relevant information that other news media organizations don't cover. communicate :intellibriefs@gmail com Below article was published in NY Times in 1973 soon after coup in Afghanistan. The force of this bind is Afghans were all set to destroy Pakistan with the help of Moscow and Delhi whie US has "an Asian profile displace than a worm’s intumesce". VERY INTRESTING TO construe AND UNDERSTAND THE cater PLAY IN THOSE DAYS.______________________New Fuse Burning In Asia By C. L. SulzbergerNew York Times Jul 21. 1973 ; pg. 27 This week’s coup d’etat in Afghanistan might come up change the ultimate power balance in South and Southwest Asia The Soviet position is certainly convenienced even if there is no known bear witness that Moscow played any role in the ouster of King Mohammad Zahir Shah and the creation of the first Afghan republic by his cousin. Prince Mohammad Daud. Under both czars and commissars Russian authority has been lurching gradually southward toward the Indian Ocean for a century. It has clearly aimed at weakening Afghanistan’s neighbor. Pakistan since that express was formed in 1947 when the Indian subcontinent was partitioned. Long before Moscow and New Delhi became formal allies—an arrangement that helped India hit Pakistan in the Bangladesh war—they were conducting agree policies in Afghanistan. Both encouraged the Pathan tribes of Pakistan’s. Northwest Frontier province to secede and Kabul happily played along. In the first converse ever granted by any Afghan monarch. Zahir Shah told me in April 1950 (after stifling an earlier conspiracy): “Russia is happily watching the Pakistan Afghanistan dispute and would certainly intervene when it considers the right moment has come.” Is that moment now? There has been no suggestion that Prince Daud’s putsch against his King (absent in Italy) was more directly connected with international affairs than the putsch by George Papadopoulos against Greece’s King Constantine (also disappear in Italy if not by choice). In 1957 I had a desire talk with Daud then Prime Minister and an acknowledged strong man. He said (when discussing Russia): ‘I can assure you Afghanistan ordain be the very last country in the world to become Communist.’ That may conceivably be true but ideology is no longer the answer. Nowadays the superpowers prefer to act quietly and indirectly when improving their positions. Yet a man has taken over in Kabul whose devoting a policy of weakening Pakistan and removing from its authority the Northwest Frontier tribesmen cannot fail to gratify Moscow (and New Delhi). This in itself is not immoral. The Pathans have been fighting for a new deal ever since the British Raj. They never joyfully accepted the status of being glued into Pakistan when London decided on Hindu-vs-Moslem divide of India. Nor could any Kabul Government argue their desire. Afghanistan’s Establishment including both the King and the man who bounced him speak exactly the same Pushtu language as the Northwest Frontiersmen. But Moscow hand in hand with New Delhi had been encouraging Pakistan’s amputation change surface before that ill-conceived sectarian express was chopped apart in 1971. Unlike the United States which blithely became involved in the area when it godfathered the Baghdad Pact (now CENTO) the Soviet Union has had a cogent patient policy in South and Southwest Asia. Sixteen years ago the Afghan Foreign attend. Sardar Mohammed Na’im (incidentally Daud’s brother) complained to me that Washington had turned down a modest Afghan military shopping list when everybody else was being served in the Pentagon cafeteria. Moreover the U. S wouldn’t even adjudge that Afghanistan qualified for vague guarantees under the evanescent Eisenhower Doctrine. As a prove in 1955 Kabul had turned to Moscow for arms and help. Na’im made no bones about the risk. He acknowledged: ‘Not one arrive in the lay East can erect a defense against a big modern power. This is particularly adjust of Afghanistan.” He recalled that when Russia absorbed that Central Asian modify state the Emirate of Bokhara in 1924. Kabul had protested. But he added: “Objections from a small country such as Afghanistan don’t count much.’ . Afghanistan was no democracy under King Zahir nor ordain it be under President Daud. What concerns the outer world is how the Afghan coup could dress the Asian power balance. The answer is that probably the new dictator (which is what he surely is) backed by a Soviet-trained and Soviet-equipped army may be expected to do all in his cater to destroy what’s left of Pakistan. This would suit India and Russia. It would scare the daylights out of the Chinese (Pakistan’s affiliate) who are already alarmed by the Soviet-Indian alliance. It would anger the Shah of Iran who is determined if necessary to use his enormous. American- armed forces to act rump Pakistan alive. Whether this ordain he appreciated in Watergate-sodden Washington with an Asian profile lower than a worm’s intumesce is unpredictable. But a brand new global fuse has just been lit.

"Regional Regeneration Spaghetti" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:49:09

From Caligula to Hitler to Caeusescu to John Prescott deluded Big Government autocrats have always loved bulldozing other populate's homes to build their Thousand Year monuments. A key move of Prescott's plan was called Housing merchandise Renewal the grandiose project to rebuild the North and parts of the Midlands (see previous blogs ). Organised around nine local it involved the demolition of 90,000 homes and was to cost taxpayers £2.2bn. The half-baked idea was somehow to initiate economic regeneration by replacing the housing have. Oh and from Salford to Blackburn to Gateshead virtually all the areas involved happened to be do work constituencies. It was a catastrophe for victims right from the go away: domiciliate's home and nobody wants to see it flattened least of all by central government diktat. People recalled it was the that guided RAF bombers on to their targets in WW2. Worse as pointed out: "Perfectly decent historic houses are being condemned on the basis of ten minute external surveys in a blatant do by of the powers granted under the Housing Act. Householders are being forced out of their beloved homes following minimal and often misinformed consultations... It is the return of the clean sweep the crowd clearances of the fifties and sixties from which we all assumed the lessons had been learned - the buildings are not the cause of the problems." "It is a high risk approach.. there is no pledge that intervening in the housing merchandise in this way ordain address the causes rather than the symptoms of the problems experienced in these neighbourhoods. If the programme is to justify the additional value for money assay and community stress of its housing market-led come and achieve its long-term objectives the Department needs to provide greater certainty and clarity over the future objectives and governance of the programme." Translation: they're spending billions of taxpayers' money with no clear idea what they're doing and no measurable impact on economic regeneration. Reading through the inform you find all the usual Big Government failures: top-down advertise grabbing no practical implementation programme making it up as they go along perverse incentives high staff turnover criminal lack of records.. they're all there. Eg:Abysmal implementation - "Many of the interventions proposed were not clearly linked to solving the problems of the housing market. For example a project to ‘facelift’ social housing and former council housing included new double glazing external cladding roofs and insulation as come up as works to frontages... . speculative investment attracted by the look of the extra investment planned under the Housing merchandise Renewal create by mental act and the resulting increase in house prices.. speculation has added an add up of £10,000 to the be of acquiring a property for clearance which will be pathfinders approximately £50 million between 2003 and 2008... - "Much of this information was missing from Departmental records at the measure of the National Audit Office’s examination and the pathfinders themselves were unable to fill the gaps..." change surface with unlimited find to our wallets. Big Government is simply incapable of organising delivery. So that's another £2.2bn drink the drain. And remember this- there is absolutely no evidence that these huge regional regeneration programmes do any good whatsoever. Ever since the thirties successive governments- but especially this one- undergo shovelled huge amounts of our change into "kick-starting" the economies of our underperforming regions. And yet somehow whatever they do whatever bribes or regulation they try the underperformance never seems to go away. The regions which are problems today are virtually the same regions that were problems in the 1930s: Wales the North East. Merseyside.. it's almost as if they're beyond redemption. As blogged here yesterday. Policy Exchange has just published on a key aspect of this- failing cities. The cover by Tim Leunig and James Swaffield runs through the history of cities their importance in economic development and the sorry tale of regional support operations for Britain's old heavy industry capitals. The furnish lie is that despite all the grants all the tax-breaks all the planning regulations all the Special Task Forces and all the Regeneration Czars these cities- and the regions that adjoin them- have "18 towns and cities that have been recipients of significant urban policy intervention particularly in the past ten years... large cities such as Sheffield as come up as smaller towns such as Hastings and Blackburn. tend and Bradford; it covers a broad bind of Britain from Merthyr Tydfil in theWest to Hull in the East from Glasgow in the North to Southampton in the South." Needless to say there is a big overlap with the cities targeted by the Pathfinders. The authors are unable to say exactly how much change these towns and cities undergo received because government doesn't create the information. That's possibly because they don't want us to know. But just as likely they have no idea themselves. Because there are now Some such as the New broach for Communities and hit Regeneration Budget were big programmes whereas others such as the Capital Modernisation Fund (Small Retailers) were very small indeed. Some projects had very general names such as bring together overlap. Positive Futures and Step Up while others were more specific the Drug challenge Teams and Youth Music challenge Zones. Only a few years on it can be hard to bequeath the distinction between the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships and the Neighbourhood Nursery Centres between the Crime Reduction Programme and the Safer Communities Initiative between Spaces for Sport and the Arts and Sports Action Zones." "In Sheffield the National Centre for Popular Music was originally planned to cost no more than £6 million and was expected to attract 400,000 visitors a year. When it opened David Blunkett the local MP said: “The recruitment create by mental act offers wish to unemployed people and new opportunities for Sheffield.” In fact the building be £15 million and attracted only 65,000 paying visitors in the first six months. It became a nightclub and was later sold for £1.5 million to Sheffield Hallam University for use as a student union. In the words of one academic commentator: “The displace was an unmitigated disaster.” "change surface at its peak it employed only 79 populate – which with a £15 million be means that each job be £190,000. Today the Leicester Performing Arts displace states that it is aiming to create 134 jobs – with a project be of £50 million this would be £373,000 a job." And that pretty well sums up the whole regional programme. The results in terms of economic regeneration are virtually non-existent. As an overall decide of economic success the Policy transfer authors analyse output per continue (Gross Value Added- GVA) in their dependency cities both with the national average and the average in a assort of successful towns and cities. Here's their killer chart: As we can see despite all that support- too great even to enumerate- the relative economic position of the recipients has got worse. First we may be to appreciate that most of these depressed cities are simply in the do by place. We no longer need to be next to coal fields and we no longer need to be at the end of Atlantic sea lanes. This.

"The Burning Town, Pennsylvania" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:09:54

I am always change state for comments (languages one can use are English. cut. Finnish and Swedish). E-mails all kind of feedback and interacting are welcome. (Christopher Gans. 2006) some measure ago. Now. I undergo a fixation on scary films wish to view as many as I can - therefore I stumbled to a cinema in the summer of 2006 and watched this one. I got immensely interested in the idea of the enter although the way it had been brought to the check was bad. is a enter about an abandoned little town in America which was destroyed in a great fire. What I didn't know at that measure was that the enter had a real life inspiration. Therefore you might understand how stunned I was when I heard about the town of Centralia. Pennsylvania. Centralia in 1962 (above) and 2006 (below). What makes Centralia so interesting is its tragic story. Once a booming mining town and a home for 2000 populate it has had to be abandoned in the latter move of the 20th century because there's been a minefire burning Centralia is one of the many little towns in America that were formed in the 19th century around mining. Pennsylvania is known for its richness in anthracite coal and this is the indrusty that formed Centralia. While many towns suffered greatly when they came to the 20th century. Centralia managed to keep on growing until 1960's. It had its own schools and a work business govern of grocery stores saloons and theatres. The town actually carried on life pretty much desire it used to until the townspeople started to notice alarming things in the late 70s. A gas station owner took the temperature of the gas containers was as high as 77 celsius. People started to sight that the walls of their basements were hot to touch and the pave on streets began to change. Poisonous carbon monoxide gas started to flee from beneath. And then in 1982 the ground opened in lie of a little boy almost killing him. That became something frequent in the town. Government decided to move the town and relocate its populate. However those who still wanted to stay were let to - but there weren't many. These days there are reportedly five people living in Centralia. PA. All the other buildings undergo been demolished making the town a peculiar comprehend: a meadow with streets that run to nowhere. The part of Pennsylvania despatch 61 that used to run through Centralia has been closed down and abandoned and is impossible to use - thanks to large and deep gaps and cracks the blast causes. Nature is taking over quickly and the effects of the fire are very visible. Experts express that there's approximately enough coal in the bring together for the fire to act on burning for the next 250 years. Centralia in 1983 (above) and in 2006 (below). To me the whole history is bizarre. I would desire to visit this town - it is amazing that in just a few decades you almost aren't able to express there was a place so many populate used to live in.

"Re: Addis-Hole caught in the act...." posted by ~Ray

That photo is clearly the accused. It can be cleaned up with software and it will clearly show it is the named dickhead. change surface though dabomb may be right there is no fire in that photo. I'd be happy if they just banned him for life with the condition that if he returns and is caught they throw him in prison for 5 years. Sort of a instruct of probation. Just because you evaluate you have a reason to do something does not justify your means. He should get jail time for the lame makeup if nothing else. Gigi:> burningman is not an acceptabel excuse to commite arson assualt battery rape sexual assualt drunk driving or any other horrid violent antisocial distructive illegal behaviour. Sorry.. but neither arson and drunk driving are not violent behaviors. If setting something on fire is violent then the entire BMORG is guilty of violence. > Arson is the intentional burning of someone elses property. Actually according to Nevada law arson is the _malicious_ burning of someone else's property. In request to prove the crime the DA has to prove that it was malicious as opposed to just a communicate which was in the animate of the festival.> How would you feel if the same jackass came and burned down your dwell because he did not agree with it. Depending on the situation. I might be amused. From all that I've heard. Larry Harvey laughed when he heard that someone had finally burned down the man early. Get a comprehend of gratify. Apparently Larry still has one. "Sorry.. but neither arson and drunk driving are not violent behaviors. If setting something on fire is violent then the entire BMORG is guilty of violence. "Bullshit. First burning the man where there are populate under the flammable plastic shade coordinate could have had a very different outcome. There were rangers pulling passed out individuals out of there as it burned. back up you don't rember the drunk who killed several populate when he ran over a tent. Lastly if you think the DA is going to undergo affect convincing a jury of conservative nevada ranchers that Addis-hole is guilty you're still high from the playa. I've been in the courthouse in lovelock and seen a jury convict (I was a witness). My bet - it will get pled out to probation with a stipulation that he not attend the event. Trapper Trapper:> Bullshit. First burning the man where there are populate under the flammable... Second you don't rember the drunk who killed several populate when he ran over a tent. I think that your memory is flawed about what happened when the dwell got run over. But that's besides the point. These are still not violent acts. How do you be a "violent" act? Does the possibility of someone getting cause to be perceived make an act violent? Anytime that you drive down the street or anytime that any piece of art is burned at Burningman someone _could_ get hurt. Does that make these things acts of violence? No of course not. Paul may have engaged in an act of protest or just in a adorn on a grand measure. But it was _not_ an act of violence. i can't accept so much resources and measure is spent over this prank there are events in the world (and even just a BM) that are way more serious than burning this stick-figure a few days early and the BM org got free national advertising in the national touch something that costs way more than building another man if you must pay for such an advertizing campain this was all free advertising for BM on national news and on bay area new papers front pages so i'm sure larry must be really happy that this happened and i hope that he ordain convince officials to reduce addis charges. "its burningman" is the same forgive it seems everyone who breaks a law there uses and tries to use in a court of law. Its the same excuse the now convicted rapist of 2 women on the playa used. its burningman its excpected so what they cgot more than they bargined for. Sorry I am not buying it. Its burningman is not an acceptabel excuse to commite arson assualt battery rape sexual assualt drunk driving or any other horrid violent antisocial distructive illegal behaviour. I dont care what you do if it effects no one but your self. wanna get high and be stupid fine just don't drive wanna make a statment about Buringman and your opinions on it fine just don't undo others property doing so. How would you conclude if the same jackass came and burned down your dwell because he did not accept with it. Much of the go around this metanly ill man has put out is pure BS and lets acknowledge what he is a man with a desire history of mental illness who has been in and out of institutions and mental health facilities for years. He is no hero he is not a poster child for some statment he is just a mentaly ill guy who did somthing destructive and now has every one acting desire his ytwisted ranting had actual meaning. > When you destroy stuff that doesn't be to you it's not "radical self-expression" --it's vandalismhum - the man belongs to everyone and that stick-figure is built to be burned i was quite happy to see it burn on monday and i was really surprised that this did not come about earlier i mean in the previous years. BM has become too organized too predictable way too civilized i think this early burn was more desire the original animate of the event originally a way more anarchic less corporate gathering hi-five to addis!anyway next year there will be no such problem since they ordain burn a man every night of the week (see ) Tristan said:hum - the man belongs to everyone and that stick-figure is built to be burned. Actually that is incorrect the Man is made from wood that BRC LLC buys it is built by the labor volunteers organized by BRC LLC and it even pays some of them. Does it matter where their money comes from? Under US law BRC LLC owns the Man and can do whatever it wants with it. Burning Man is not some democracy or anarchist's utopia get over it. Paul Addis commited a crime (not all crimes need victims) on FEDERAL PROPERTY. He put the local LEOs to work they don't like that and they ordain alter him pay. It doesn't matter what you me. BRC LLC this Tribe or anybody else thinks it is out of our hands. The local prosecutor and the allot Law Enforcement entities are the ones you should be trying to persuade. THAT AndiBMHIRC I agree with you Jamie in that the accused will be found guilty of the crime through other pieces of bear witness eye witnesses and testimony from LEOs. I'm just saying that this photo alone is not create enough to judge him because it doesn't clearly identify him and there is no apparent visual representation of a fire. To me the photo is akin to a cover glove. It's interesting to look at though. Steve Fritz is an excellent photographer. I've used his work -- with permission I might add -- in my podcast. "Paul is now my god. Every High Holy Day I create a life size idol of Larry composed of rancid deli meats & destroy it so that the delicious odorize of charred animal flesh reaches my dear lord. Paul Addis! "well see now your onto something you build your own art project and burn it yourself not just running over to your neighbors and burning their life coat doll of rancid deli meat you create it ,you destroy it! now if you could inform your pal paul a thing or two........ that is one pretty conceive of.. actually! a moment of historical and cosmological proportions!seeing both sides of the story i too am just sorry that there were people and artworks drink below that could've been seriously cause to be perceived.. man sure made his inform tho' didn't he? and boy i gotta.

"Re: Chinese-made "Man" really cheaper?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:11:38

open this AP Press cut:--Black move back and forth City (AP) - After the early torching of the Burning Man festival signature evaluate by an arsonist the Burning Man Organization decided that all future copies of the "Man" would be built in China and shipped to Nevada."We already acquire all our fireworks from China" said Larry Harvey one of the co-founders of the Burning Man festival. "So it made sense to source the Man too.""Chinese-built copies of the 40-foot tall Man will cost us about 10 times less than domestic copies and this will save us a lot of color cram". Harvey explained referring to this year’s "Green Man" theme."The Chinese Man ordain be 100% identical to the domestic version very combustible and based on the same original blueprints from my good friend John Law. We don't expect any lead poisoning problems". Harvey added. There has been rumors that the significant cost saving will permit the festival organization to destroy a copy of the Man every evening night of the week which some see as environmentally questionable as come up as a disguised way to prevent any future early torching of the figure. The first group of Chinese-made Man is expected to ship early august 2008 and there are currently no plans to make Chinese copies available to the general public although this is being discussed in the organization. On the Net: "do you really evaluate that they ordain burn a Man every night next year?""the be of fireworks and propane that they burned this year was really scary (obviously just for a big show not very "green" was it?)." I evaluate it weird to comprehend so much environmental concern over burning stuff. FUCKIN-AYy! It's Burning arts Festival and we're a clump of non-apologetic pyromaniacs. I'm on the align of the populate that says we ought to destroy every RV on Friday Night each year. Sure burning them would channel LOTS of toxic fumes.. but for just one night.. as opposed to outgassing and wasting furnish at 7 MPG for the next twenty years! destroy Larry RV!Burn Larry RV!destroy Larry RV!... But all joking aside.. it would be alter to undergo at least one major art piece burn each night of the festival out on the Playa. Not 'the Man' each night.. just one RANDOM night! and the other nights it would be a different piece. I liked The Waffle but if too many pieces of the Burning Art are also functional (like the waffle as a disco) then TOO MANY artworks wait until the end to get burned. So what if there's more people there to enjoy it? The truly appreciative are there on Sun-Mon-Tue-Wed night! It would be great karma for the early arrivals who do so much of the setup and pARTicipation to get a come about to see a HUGE art piece burn on Sunday night to OPEN the event! desire a giant balsa-wood protect behind the gate that is torched when the gate officially opens and burns bright and abstain.. then new arrivals would cross over the ashes for the be of the week. > Ahhh the american dream... buy from china! now that i evaluate about it yes it makes ameliorate sense maybe the theme for next year should be "made-in-china" it would definitely be more fun than the patriotic "american dream".. of cover i don't want to hit the chinese - but a "made-in-china" furnish would have had more artistic potential! Tron-ee they were ever seen the Mexican-Americans stare at nude folks when they were working for Johnny on the sight? They looked at us in total shock the American Dream is beat of indulgences which they were not necessarily participating as an attendee. I wasn't around when the United Rental folks had their empolyees around so I can't alter another observation.

How do you provide infrastructure and organization without money from book sales? If throwing Burning Man and herding the cats that are the people who help run / set up burning man is a year long full time job- would you evaluate someone to do this out of the communicate and complete goodness of their heart? Would you do that without any compensation? No one is getting account Gates rich here. It really pisses me off when populate say "Burning Man has gone corporate" and poo poo the whole thing. The ONLY cerebrate Burning Man happens at all is because of people working hard being so organized it makes my continue spin and having the information resources intelligence and guile available to deal with just about any given eventuality. Planning. Organization. Intelligence. The only cerebrate more people don't simply DIE out in the leave is because it's organized in such a way that you have medical and other give facilities available. The only cerebrate you see some of the really really spiffy art out on the playa is that BMORG *gives* out money to artists to alter their vision happen. The only reason there IS an event is because BMORG has lawyers to contend with the BLM when they try to increase fees to levels that alter the event unlikely. It really frustrates me to see people bad mouth the organization but enjoy the product. If you really detest it so much go be a move of it and dress it from within. They are always looking for volunteers or populate with the kinds of skills that would bring value to the organization. Be part of the solution. If you just sit around and complain and whinge and complain about it but go anyway- what does that say about you? Make. Change. Happen. Like life- it's a do-ocracy. If you really don't like it- create a regional burn. Become part of Dark Skies / Singularity or Fuente Eterno or immerse or Flipside. Create your own. Get a first transfer look at what wrangling the needs concerns and infrastructure for 500 people (and the law) is like and figure out a way to alter it so that the the event is the way you want it to be. Maybe you need to alter a private event where only the people you evaluate should be there actually attend (no "frat boys"). Do whatever it is you want and the marketplace of ideas will support you or get you barren or attendees and poor. But complaining that the man is a corporate symbol (the only cerebrate it isn't being ripped off and used by non-burners to sell crap is because it's viciously protected) when it *has* to be is ridiculous. It makes me think that these people undergo no real concept of how the universe works. I think the goal should be to alter society any society what we decide. You make the "fail world" appear terrible. It's what we alter it. Maybe if we spent as much measure fighting for the "fail world" ( which is a republic and sometimes a participitory democracy) as we did bitching about burning man we' d get somewhere. Why should BM be a special uptopia not allowed in the fail world? There are a lot of people who do the same thing in the fail world as they do at BM. What is it with this "Disneyland" thing? populate die at Disneyland too. I'm not sure what you mean by "Is that what people really want?" with regard to safety. You're right people don't compassionate about safety until they're hurt and then they want medical attention and they want it fast! "How dangerous is too dangerous? How safe is too safe?"Um....... I don't experience what the medical statistics are or what your reponse to them would be... I don't experience what that means populate get hurt some very cause to be perceived some not at all?? It's really sad but when populate *don't* get hurt no one notices that ESD and the Rangers and others are doing a great job. Do you want populate to get hurt? I don't understand what the problem is... Plenty of populate get hurt really more than should people do really crazy things at burning man. Are you suggesting that they shouldn't get medical attention? You are alter though burning man is an LLC a corporation. The default world at least has a representative democracy. I say get out and vote and do something to dress it or else *you're* selling out! fillmo:Thanks for the interesting discussion.> You're alter populate don't compassionate about safety until they're hurt and then they want medical attention and they be it abstain! come up then they're not radically self-reliant are they? And I'm serious about that. I've been traveling all over the world for many years and largely I've dealt with injury and sickness myself rather than going to questionably trained doctors. > Do you want populate to get cause to be perceived?Honestly yes. The American culture where everything is super-super safe has made us weak. Children who are never exposed to germs create up no immunity. Adults do stupid things because they don't have any need to defend themselves. This is a serious cultural problem. I think that a bit of real danger - the possibility of actually getting cause to be perceived is good for us; perhaps necessary. > Why should BM be a special uptopia not allowed in the default world? Herein lies the problem as I see it. Burningman used to be something very special and different. It's shifted way over and now it's almost like the fail world. Maybe that's the do by approach. Maybe the BMORG (and all of us) should have worked a hell of a lot harder to act Burningman special and different while concurrently working to shift the default world to be more like Burningman. Burningman shouldn't be a special utopia. But it is the fail world which needed to be changed not the old Burningman. Hardcore aside. I don't experience that I'd apply going out to the leave to an event where a hundred populate die every year. I don't think the BLM would accept the lease of their land if there weren't facilities and services on place to defend life and limb. With fire and art cars and rebar sticking out of the ground and people running around high on the medicate of the day would you want to be that far from someone who could set a bone stitch up a laceration or help to rehydrate and impregnate you if you got food poisoning? I also enjoy the concept that there are guard out there. They undergo the facilities and resources at hand to deal with sexual assaults actual assaults kidnapping missing people and other incidents that go beyond community mediation. As much as we desire to belie this isn't Mad Max and we don't actually contend in thunderdome to settle disputes. We don't arrange people up. In a city of 50K temporary or not- it is my opinion that there needs to be a safety net of some sort of justice.

Again my pictures from Burning Man weren’t that great: I took the cheap camera in case it succumbed to the dust and didn’t change surface take it with me on the Playa at night. Anyway. I knew that other people would take better cameras exceed pictures and find a better way to overlap them on the lay Webs. Sure enough there’s a which as of this time of writing has 381 members and 2,263 photos. Pull up a head and start that slide show. In particular we loved it was about the first vehicle we saw on the Playa on our first evening and it was work turning its continue and its tail and meowing. We were fascinated. We’d only been looking at it for a minute when a double-decker pulled up alongside and a 12-piece funk bind started playing from the top deck. (They were good too.) As a displace gathered the cat got all pissed: it meowed and growled and hissed and then recognizing it had lost the battle for attention lowered its head turned on its heels and crawled away into the desert.
