I am rather at a loss as things seem to dress by themselves on thisVista forge. Here's the setup: Vista client. FreeBSD 6.2 server with samba 3.0.25;also a FreeBSD 4.11 machine (server) with samba 2.2.12Vista connected to samba 3 with password and the machines were presenton the network. Then the machines would not show up on Vista at all;they could be pinged and they could be mounted on Vista. Then I started up the older machine (4.11 FBSD) and the network shows upon Vista. But I cannot log in to dance3. From Vista net believe \\6.2server returns - System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied on 6.2server the log shows: lib/util_sock c:read_data(534)read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.0.50. I had a nasty little file download itself onto my desktop but not properly. As a result it didn't work. Yet every time I hit delete an error message said. "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the obtain file or disk". The file had 0kb of memory the file name was incomplete and there was no file extension. It wasn't a virus or malware - I scanned to be sure. I was using Windows XP. Here's a quickie on how I fixed it by deleting the folder that contained the file. (Legal blah: approve up your data read the instructions read other people's instructions. I act no responsibility for any data monetary or other loss this is just a story of my personal success...)1. First I found the correct folder address by using Start>Search. I needed the correct address in order to locate it during the next step. In my inspect the file was located at C:\Documents and Settings\MY NAME\Desktop\divx-501 vo llnwd net2. I opened the command prompt by clicking Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command cause3. I changed the directory from "C:\" to "C:\Documents and Settings\MY NAME\Desktop" by typing the following and hitting go (say that "cd" means "dress directory"): cd C:\Documents and Settings\MY NAME\Desktop4. I deleted the folder the file was contained in by typing DEL followed by the stupidly long name of the folder: DEL divx-501 vo llnwd net5. The Command Prompt asked whether I was sure? I typed Y and hit go. This is what it all looked like (click to zoom):Returning to the desktop. I then tried to delete the folder containing the evil file and this time it deleted! Hooray. (If the file had been locked by explorer which it wasn't because I checked you also be to change by reversal off explorer exe while you use the dominate Prompt. Look that up if you have no idea what I'm talking about.) I know. He is a bit of a don. It is so much fun but I too am in awe of the cater of a single dominate (have to say I love KILL when dealing with stubborn applications :)). Ubuntu has some cool back up files when using a terminal window and (given that you have a backup of your files you can always reinstall. Recently I had a program create a problem with; well Im not sure exactly what. But it created a file folder that absolutely could not be deleted no matter what I tried. I tried to rename it to move it to delete it from safe mode from administrator safe mode nothing worked I spent hours and hours searching the web trying to find a solution. What I found on the net darkened my hopes of ever getting rid of this folder short of a change and reload of windows. Not one to furnish up very easily at all. I starting thinking of ways one might delete files nothing seemed to be of much help until I found out that I could move the file if it was on the same drive inside its parent folder. Now if the file or folder you need to delete is in your grow system folder or on any other divide then your system or root partition then this fix probably won't bring home the bacon for you. To alter it a bit clearer the file or folder you want to delete must be on the system control divide but not in the root of that control or partition. The reasons why ordain soon become apparent. Also you must undergo administrator rights to perform this fix Ok what ever folder the target file or folder is in; empty it out saving all other files to another folder that can be renamed later. Now that you undergo just the aim file or folder inside its parent folder you can call the parent folder to what ever you want. I used "Delete Me" just so I didn't alter any mistakes. Now start windows and kick into safe mode. If you are not sure how to kick into safe mode a command of thumb is to restart the system and tap the F8 key as soon as the kick grade begins usually until you hear system beeps that communicate keyboard errors. By this measure the system is booting into safe mode. When you see the login screen log in as administrator the system ordain act to kick usually there will be a message advising you that you are booting into safe mode and asking if you want to continue. Windows XP safe mode desktop is color so don't worry if you have never been here before everything is going book. End of story. No more unwanted files. I experience that it seems desire a long way around to accomplish a small task but if you are desire me you have been pulling your hair out over how to aid this "Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk" problem. Don't forget to regenerate your original files to their original location after creating a new folder to put them in the proper location.
