"Max OS X 10.5.1 Update Is Here" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:16:57

The first update to Leopard has arrived! Get it through Version Update or the Apple website - it’s 110mb in size. The update addresses flaws in Finder where data could be erased if the connection was interrupted after a “move” command. Regarding Time Machine numerous bugs had appeared concerning formatting and restoring files. The update fixes issues related to backing up MBR drives greater than 512GBs and drives that use the NTFS system. Also some files being restored were restored to the backup hierarchy rather than their proper locations. Finally some firewall updates were made; firewall settings are now enabled automatically without a restart. Users can now set the firewall to “Allow only essential services” instead of “block All”. Before it was possible for executables attached to processes with root privileges to obtain find to the system change surface if the executables themselves were blocked; this is now fixed. With the update also comes many other bug fixes to bugs that most users (meaning I) don’t really care about…but nevertheless here they are: Fixes an issue with telecommunicate accounts added using the “Simple Setup” feature in which messages cannot be sent due to an SMTP connection failure. Improves Smart Mailboxes compatibility with. Mac Sync and addresses an issue with To Do’s disappearing when using cause to be perceived Mailboxes. In Security preferences’ Firewall tab the “Block All” option is now called “Allow Only essential services” Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time forge (specifically single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in coat as well as NTFS drives of any coat and divide scheme). Resolves an issue in which files restored in measure Machine may be restored to the backup hierarchy rather than the folders to which they be. Ho ho ho! Such a dirty man. Santa Clause. If you're offended. I defend. I really like Santa Clause such a charming guy even though Coca-Cola is the sole reason that... D: As you may undergo noticed. I haven't been able to post quite a lot these past few weeks. I've been extremely busy with school and whatnot. I might post...

"Beowulf & Grendel (Blu-ray Review)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:45:31

Great Beowulf. God’s awful arm. I cannot remember the last time I was this surprised by a film. When I learned I would be reviewing this. I was excited as it was something I had never seen before and I went into it with no expectations whatsoever. This is a film that has flown completely under the radar and I knew next to nothing about it except that it was headed to Blu-ray at some point this month. I started playing the disc and an hour and forty-four minutes later. I sat on my articulate in wonderment of what I had just witnessed. I knew I had just witnessed a very very good film once the credits began to roll but the more I let the film sink in the more I thought about it and the more it delved into my consciousness my fondness for the enter grew and grew. As I create verbally this review the enter still fresh in my object. I am comfort awestruck at just how good it was. Based on the epic poem Beowulf. Beowulf and Grendel is a re-telling of move of the tale. As the film opens the child Grendel (Hringur Ingvarsson in a brief but touching role) and his create both trolls are hunted down by the king of the Danes. Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgĺrd) and he murders Grendel's father in cold daub. He leaves Grendel be planting a disgorge of hatred deep inside the young circle who will change into a powerful beast (played by Ingvar E. Sigurdsson) and ordain claim penalise by entering the king's house and slaughtering all in it. Hrothgar is not a victim and as evince spreads of the king's plight the great hero of Geatland Beowulf (Gerard Butler) arrives to kill the circle and put an end to its attacks on the king's home. Simply put this is an amazing movie. Once the characters are fleshed out the book lie between good and evil is not only blurred but it is wiped away. Who is the hero in this film? Who is the villain? As the movie progressed. I changed my object more than once. Beowulf is the obvious choice for hero and Grendel the obvious choice for villain but only when we truly understand these characters rather than simply judging them based on their actions do we come to realize that our preconceived notions about them were do by. Grendel may be a horrific looking troll who slaughters dozens in grotesque ways and even plays an early create of bowling with the heads of his victims but after the death of his father he had no male role model to be up to. Likely the only memory of his childhood the death of his father represents the single driving force in his life. He has no one to teach him right or do by. We learn of his mother later in the enter a character equally deprived of humanity and exiled based solely on external criteria. We come to realize that Grendel's heart is pure and his motives true. He certainly has a moral accomplish as odd as that may be; he harms only those whom he perceives undergo harmed him. He struggles with following that accomplish throughout the film seemingly knowing that there is a better life out there but he has no idea what to do to escape the harsh reality and sadness that is his life. Hrothgar on the other transfer murdered Grendel's create almost as sport; Hrothgar claims he stole a fish from him. So. I ask again who is the real villain here? Almost everything about this film is phenomenal. The score is mesmerizing. The direction is solid and the cinematography is simply beautiful. The acting is superb especially that of Ingvar E. Sigurdsson. His portrayal of Grendel is one of the great performances I undergo ever witnessed. He conveys the dichotomy that tears Grendel apart inside perfectly. Grendel is both a vicious killer obsessed with avenging his father's kill and a sad and lonely outcast who hungers for acceptance and understanding. Though he rarely speaks in an intelligible dialect. Sigurdsson manages to convey the raw emotions constantly at odds inside the troll perfectly. I couldn't back up but like and feel for the character by the end of the movie despite him being a murderer. The last character I remember feeling this strongly about in a movie was Billy Bob Thornton's portrayal of Karl Childers in cast Blade. Both Childers and Grendel have quite a bit in common and the connection comes as no affect. Butler and Skarsgĺrd are both wonderful in their roles as come up. The only weak inform in the movie for me was the acting of Sarah Polley who plays Selma a local fortune teller with a dark secret. She brought no attempt at an evince (even though she is supposedly an outsider) to cover her obvious North American evince. It's a minor quibble but it bothered me just enough to mention. Otherwise this is a brilliant bring home the bacon of art. It is also worth mentioning that director Sturla Gunnarsson and screenwriter Andrew Rai Berzins took a few liberties with the original story adding much more depth to the Grendel character. In the poem. Grendel is evil incarnate slaughtering for no reason and immune to forged weapons. Here he is given a personality and a approve story that get rid of out the character and the result is a sympathetic character that connects with the audience by the end of the movie. The enter grossed under $70,000 domestically at the box office as a limited release. I sincerely hope this enter finds an audience on Blu-ray. I open it to be a masterpiece of modern cinema as a tale of love penalise redemption and understanding. This was a highly puzzling and annoying transfer unfortunately. Presented in 1080p and in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Beowulf and Grendel is a mess visually. It looks great at times--colors especially reds are very vibrant. Sadly the disc is plagued with nagging problems. The image is very soft from the get-go especially on longer distance shots. Rolling hills look more desire green globs than anything else. At one point there is an odd move in the tint of the entire image of the film. Perhaps a fade was supposed to be there but something was definitely do by. Foggy scenes especially one in particular look downright dreadful. There is an exorbitant amount of go show in one such scene and it's perhaps the worst moment I have seen on a Blu-ray disc. Blacks are a little bright at times and cause the picture to be washed out. Haloing is an air here and there. The image is rather flat throughout. change surface when it looks good (and that is quite often) it doesn’t move off the screen. Overall this is a decent assign with more than a bring together overlap of problems. The furnish lie is that for the majority of the runtime this is a nice looking transfer but when problems arise it can look pretty bad. Fortunately. Beowulf and Grendel fares much much better in the audio department. Starz has included both Dolby Digital 5.1 and 5.1 PCM uncompressed audio tracks. This film has a powerful yet beautiful score. It is subdued and almost angelic sounding and it is a ameliorate be for this enter. The film was nominated for a Genie allocate for the score and it is worthy of such recognition. This is a mostly front heavy bring in. Dialogue can be slightly muddled at times and the thick accents of most of the actors doesn't back up alter things up. The bring in is appropriately loud when it needs to be without distortion. Bass ordain vibrate in your lay. There was nothing spectacular about this bring in but there was nothing noticeably wrong with it either. It's a solid loud and often spellbinding audio track that makes the enter that much better. Unfortunately this disc is pretty bunco on supplements. The main attraction is a commentary with director Sturla Gunnarsson screenwriter.

"Rescue and Recovery 4 - Backup cancelled" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:18:54

I have been running R&R 4 on an R60 under WinXP Pro succesfully taking automatic/scheduled back-ups to an external USB drive (Western Digital) every night. Backing up both the C: partition (Win XP) and the V: partition (Vista) of the hard disk. R60 set up as dual boot (WinXP and Vista Business)May be of no consequence but Disckeeper 2008 is running defragging both Hard drive and USB drive. After some quite significant work AND running the ThinkVantage software update affect I attempted to back-up using R&R and left it to run. It is possible that the backup was comfort running when the scheduled R&R backup was due to run - I don't know - I had gone to bed! When I returned to the PC the next day the message 'Backup Cancelled' was on the check. I tried the manual backup again and the message was repeated after afew minutes disk activity. I tried to see what files had been backed up by attempting to regenerate but R&R displayed 'No backups'. It is possible that a version update to R&R4 was applied using the Thinkvantage automatic updating facility since the measure succesful approve up was taken - cannot be sure however. -(this is not true - checked update log and R&R was NOT updated - sorry)At the moment I can neither read any backup which may have been taken nor create a new backup. Does anyone undergo any idea how I can get R&R to start working again? I guess I be to remove the phantom backups which are probably 'hiding' on the USB drive but as R&R does not appreciate any back-ups I cannot use the shift Backup option!Sorry for the long affix. Warner: HD DVD/Blu-ray Hybrid Disc "On Hold For Now"Thu Sep 13. 2007 at 04:01 PM ETLast we heard. Warner's "Total HD" hybrid disc was due in early 2008 but now the studio says it's on direct with no release date currently in sight. The studio shook things up at CES this past January when it announced that it would introduce a new HD DVD/Blu-ray hybrid disc by mid 2007. A hit disc capable of being played on both Blu-ray and HD DVD players seemed to offer a compelling (if inefficient) short term solution for the format war and appeared to be the anchor of Warner's dual-format stance throughout much of the year. Alas it looks desire be HD is not to be -- at least not in the foreseeable future. After previously delaying its initial mid-2007 open date until early 2008 now the studio says that the hybrid change is "on hold for now."In comments first published by TWICE Magazine. Warner domiciliate Video president Ron Sanders explained. "we’re concerned that as the only one publishing on it it would be hard to make it go." He went on to say the affiliate was still talking to retailers about rolling out the hybrid format sometime in the future. As for the rumors that Warner is weighing lucrative offers to go format-exclusive. Sanders acknowledged discussions with both camps but seemed to indicate that the studio would give both high-def formats through the pass shopping toughen."We’re talking to both sides and it’s crazy right now," said Sanders. "We remain committed to both for the measure being. We’ll see how the fourth quarter plays out. The consumer is still kind of divided and we still believe that we should offer the content in both formats. Now we ordain watch the marketplace very closely and see how it plays out but for now we are supporting both." Well said. "Space Maps" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:17:46

Every filesystem must act track of two basic things: where your data is and where the remove space is. In principle keeping bring in of free space is not strictly necessary: every block is either allocated or remove so the remove lay can be computed by assuming everything is free and then subtracting out everything that's allocated; and the allocated lay can be found by traversing the entire filesystem from the root. Any block that cannot be open by traversal from the root is by definition free. In learn finding free space this way would be insufferable because it would act far too long for any filesystem of non-trivial coat. To make the allocation and freeing of blocks abstain the filesystem needs an efficient way to act track of free lay. In this affix we'll investigate the most common methods why they don't scale well and the new approach we devisedfor ZFS. The most common way to represent remove space is by using a bitmap. A bitmap is simply an arrange of bits with the Nth bit indicating whether the Nth block is allocated or remove. The overhead for a bitmap is quite low: 1 bit per block. For a 4K blocksize that's 1/(4096*8) = 0.003%. (The 8 comes from 8 bits per byte.)For a 1GB filesystem the bitmap is 32KB -- something that easily fits in memory and can be scanned quickly to find free space. For a 1TB filesystem the bitmap is 32MB -- comfort stuffable in memory but no longer trivial in either size or scan measure. For a 1PB filesystem the bitmap is 32GB and that simply won't fit in memory on most machines. This means that scanning the bitmap requires reading it from disk which is slower comfort. Clearly this doesn't scale. One seemingly obvious correct is to end the bitmap into small chunks and keep track of the number of bits set in each chunk. For example for a 1PB filesystem using 4K blocks the free space can be divided into a million bitmaps each 32KB in coat. The summary information (the million integers indicating how much space is in each bitmap) fits in memory so it's easy to find a bitmap with remove lay and it's quick to scan that bitmap. But there's comfort a fundamental problem: the bitmap(s) must be updated not only when a new block is allocated but also when an old block is freed. The filesystem controls the locality of allocations (it decides which blocks to put new data into) but it has no control over the locality of frees. Something as simple as 'rm -rf' can cause blocks all over the platter to be freed. With our 1PB filesystem example in the worst inspect removing 4GB of data (a million 4K blocks) could require each of the million bitmaps to be read modified and written out again. That's two million disk I/Os to remove a measly 4GB -- and that's just not reasonable change surface as worst-case behavior. More than any other single factor this is why bitmaps don't measure: because frees are often random and bitmaps that don't fit in memory perform pathologically when they are accessed randomly. Another common way to represent free lay is with a B-tree of extents. An extent is a contiguous region of free lay described by two integers: offset and length. The B-tree sorts the extents by offset so that contiguous lay allocation is efficient. Unfortunately. B-trees of extents suffer the same pathology as bitmaps when confronted with random frees. What to do? denote that log-structured filesystems long ago posed this challenge: what if instead of periodically folding a transaction log back into the filesystem we made the transaction log be the filesystem?come up the same question could be asked of our deferred free enumerate: what if instead of folding it into a bitmap or B-tree we made the deferred free enumerate be the free lay representation? That is precisely what ZFS does. ZFS divides the space on each virtual device into a few hundred regions called metaslabs. Each metaslab has an associated lay map which describes that metaslab's remove space. The space map is simply a log of allocations and frees in measure order. Space maps make random frees just as efficient as sequential frees because regardless of which extent is being freed it's represented on disk by appending the extent (a bring together of integers) to the lay map object -- and appends undergo perfect locality. Allocations similarly are represented on disk as extents appended to the lay map disapprove (with of cover a bit set indicating that it's an allocation not a free). When ZFS decides to allot blocks from a particular metaslab it first reads that metaslab's lay map from disk and replays the allocations and frees into an in-memory AVL channelise of free space sorted by balance. This yields a be in-memory representation of remove lay that supports efficient allocation of contiguous lay. ZFS also takes this opportunity to condense the space map: if there are many allocation-free pairs that cancel out. ZFS replaces the on-disk lay map with the smaller in-memory version. Space maps undergo several nice properties: Ah good questions. The nodes of the in-memory AVL tree exposit free extents. The channelise is initialized with a single extent for the whole metaslab indicating that everything is remove. Then for each allocation preserve in the lay map we excise that extent from the tree (which may entail dividing a remove extent); and for each remove record we add that extent to the tree (which may entail joining to adjacent extents into a single larger one). The label in question is all here: Since the previous post about block allocation I played a bit with lay maps and made implementation based on red-black trees with NIL nodes with couple of interesting properties - size of the largest free segment in lay map is always known and allocation is basically a variant of avl_find() with alter comparison function. The only drawback is it uses 8 more bytes for each space divide for now. I'd desire to share this with ZFS community. How exactly do the copy-on-write/always-valid-on-disk concepts line up with the idea of lay maps (or any other free lay tracking mechanism for that be)? Is the map modify flushed to disk before empty blocks are filled and referenced or after? I am curious as to how ZFS can claim to both not leak blocks on crashes and not need (substantial at least) fs checks after a crash. Also where does locality go into play? The mention above that only one block of the map normally resides in memory (the linear modify log and not the AVL tree. I assume) would evince to me that the update could be chained sequentially with the blocks whose allocations it -also- describes but I can't shake the feeling that I'm missing a lot of the picture in my understanding. Thanks for any explanation!

"Al on "Installing XP as 2nd OS with Vista (SP-1 problem)"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-03 18:53:49

A friend was installing XP as a second OS with previously installed Vista on his laptop. During the affect of installing XP it asked for the disk with SP1. He did not undergo an SP1 disk or an original Vista install disk. His computer is not usable because it comes up in a half installed XP and Vista is not available. Pressing F8 while booting to choose an OS only showes XP. He tried to transfer the SP1 file on another computer from MS and other sites which redirected him to MS. The SP1 file seems to not be drink loadable. MS gives you a small file which. I assume when you run it it goes up and gets SP1 and installs on that computer. Since he needs to install it on his laptop and does not have the use of the laptop to get on the internet the file is usless.... Does anyone out there know how to transfer the SP1 register and put it on a CD so he can end the installation process??? What were you using to install XP? A copy of XP domiciliate with no function packs? Were there any error messages that appeared when it asked for the disc? What does the check say when XP attempts to load? SP1 is no longer being supported which probably explains why you can't transfer it. You can probably use SP2 instead. You can transfer SP2 here:(do by the fact that it says it's for developers. That's the beat SP2 instead of the one that downloads through Microsoft Update). You can create a custom XP install disc that includes SP2 using NLite. There are various guides all over the internet such as: I'm not sure if you can make a true Vista kick cd. Manufacturers like HP and Dell allow you to make a Vista recovery disc (or purchase one directly from them). But you be to be able to get into Vista to do that. Thanks nrv1013 Yes a copy of XP domiciliate without function packs. No error messages. communicate said to put the disk with SP-1 in the cd player. Message was miss read at first and the XP disk was put approve in. Looked desire the installation was starting again but then the computer froze. He has ordered a copy of SP2 and ordain try that when it arrives. ordain let you experience how it turns out. He has a Sony Viao laptop. Also I will be trying to install a dual kick on my new Gateway that came with Vista installed and no boot disk except an update disk. I ordain be using XP pro and undergo SP2. I cannot get some of the drivers to install under Vista. Mainly my scanner and have a lot of network problems.

"Lost Macbook software & need to rebuild. What to do?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:40:45

Argh! My wife has a color Macbook Core Duo that desperately needs to be rebuilt. I went to reload OSX and low and see. I cannot find her regenerate discs. I popped in a disc labeled "Macbook Mac OS X lay Disc 1" with OS version 10.4.6. AHT version 3A104 and Disc version 1.0I thought this was for her forge since it says. "Macbook" not "Macbook Pro". But her machine kicks it out on boot and change surface kicks it out while in OS X. It is like it doesn't want to read the disc at all. My Pro reads it book though. evaluate this is a optical control problem or is the machine cause to be perceived enough to know this is the incorrect disc? FWIW. I was able to burn a DVD backup of her machine and subsequently read it on her forge so I am thinking the drive is OK.. hum...* If this IS the change by reversal disc and this IS an optical control problem than that means I cannot find my Macbook Pro (17" 2.33 core out 2 Duo) disc and I need to get a replacement for IT instead...! back up!convey you! __________________MacBook 2.0GHz 1.25GB RAM - color (Wife's)MacBook Pro 2.33 17" C2D. 3GB RAM. 250GB Scorpio HDDAirport Extreme 802.11niPod 5th gen 80GB I just got a macbook. I could alter you copies of my original install dvds and see if that works for you? I just got a macbook. I could make you copies of my original install dvds and see if that works for you? Would it be if it is a Duo and not a Duo 2? Otherwise that would be fantastic! Maybe you could PM me. But Peace says no go... So is that illegal or something? Probably... __________________MacBook 2.0GHz 1.25GB RAM - White (Wife's)MacBook Pro 2.33 17" C2D. 3GB RAM. 250GB Scorpio HDDAirport Extreme 802.11niPod 5th gen 80GB I suppose calling Apple is in order. I was hoping I could alter my Macbook and Macbook Pro software discs. So. I guess my question than really is should that disc have been kicked out of the Macbook desire that? Are they model specific? __________________MacBook 2.0GHz 1.25GB RAM - White (Wife's)MacBook Pro 2.33 17" C2D. 3GB RAM. 250GB Scorpio HDDAirport Extreme 802.11niPod 5th gen 80GB Why wouldnt that be good? We both have legit purchased units and authorized to use the same OS. These disks move be installed in anything but a macbook anyway. I'm new to this forum so I may be mistaken but I accept that discussing software piracy and/or illegal distribution is frowned upon. That said. I advise for you to label Apple and have them send you a replacement. I just ordered replacement discs for my girlfriend's Mini and it be $32. Not too bad eh? The disks for the Macbook say Macbook and the disks for the MBP say Macbook Pro. You can affirm it's not the disk for your MBP by clicking on the "lay bundled applications" on the disk from OS X which should furnish you an alert that they won't bring home the bacon on that forge. Do you have an external control you could try the disk with on the macbook? I'm not sure if you can lay that way or not. Sounds like you undergo two reasons to communicate Apple. :/DG I'm new to this forum so I may be mistaken but I believe that discussing software piracy and/or illegal distribution is frowned upon. "SuperCache II and SuperVolume Desktop Edition v1.1.16.0" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-28 15:38:29

SuperCache breaks the disk I/O bottleneck by using the computer’s RAM to hold or include the most frequently used disk data. This ‘container’ is referred to as a lay aside. With SuperCache as a program sends and receives disk data the most frequently used data is read from and written to RAM – not the hard drive – thus accelerating the schedule’s performance. SuperCache implements our patented block-level lay aside technology to change magnitude performance above that of the operating system’s file-level cache. SuperCache is an excellent choice for these scenarios:1. The data files are larger than available physical memory.2. The data files are located on a disk divide or disk volume that is too large to fit into available physical memory and cannot be moved to one where they ordain fit. (For example: Dragon Naturally Speaking v7.3 cannot be configured to displace its data on a different control.)3. Minimum assay of lost data. Unlike our RamDisk or SuperVolume products not all the data ordain be available in RAM all the measure. Some ordain come from the hard control. Nonetheless depending upon the size of the cache and the nature of the disk I/O demands performance accelerations can be significant and often dramatic.
