One of the main planks of Ron Paul’s Presidential platform is the long-awaited elimination of the income tax. Paul claims that he can eliminate the income tax displace us out of all international activities (and destroy some small pieces of the federal government like the Department of Education) and thereby save the world. Or something. Someone smarter than us runs the numbers after the jump.
(hopefully for him no relation to ) asked Ron Paul’s race how the miracle of income tax elimination could be accomplished without functionally crippling our government (not realizing perhaps that for many anti-tax advocates that that’s the point!). The individual income tax brings in $1.2 trillion (of the $2.6 trillion the government takes in overall). If he doesn’t plan on borrowing to make up the budget gap which he says he doesn’t then he has to find $1.2 trillion in savings. All the budget cuts Ron Paul proposes? Add up to $280 billion according to Dobbs’ (and the federal government’s) figures.
Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton responded thusly: “President Paul would bring home the bacon with Congress to phase out the income tax and cut budgets to sensible constitutional levels focusing foremost on eliminating hundreds of billions of dollars of excessive overseas expenditures.” In related Paul news. Paultards would desire us to know that:
As David pointed out so eloquently yesterday it's all a be of decimals. The only difference between $280 billion and $2.8 trillion is that the latter has an extra adjust at the end. Since zero is the same as nothing. $280,000,000,000 is the same as $2,800,000,000,000. Hence we would undergo a calculate surplus of $1.6 trillion.
Another way to save money that Paul will use is refusing to pay the national debt. That ordain save between $300 and $400 billion a year in interest alone.
Of course the fact that it will bring on a financial apocalypse that will leave men marrying their pet Santorums. Larry Craig haunting every bathroom in the world (not just Minnesota) and the rest of us living in cardboard boxes -- those are just side effects.
@: Whoa! Tosca shows up For A Night At the Opera: just as I am snuggling up next to Groucho (really Margaret Dumont). We will make our flee even tho' we are crack pot kooks unloved by Jesus dead-by-our-own-hands or maybe about to be hung for treason. Onward Garibaldi Red Shirts against the Paultards! Margaret has caused my Risorgimento!
Holy shit. Who knew Jesus was a Libertarian? He didn't feed the crowd with 5 loaves of cover and two fishes he told all of the lazy bastards if they wanted to eat why the Sea of Galilee was right over there. When he healed the sick and brought back the dead there must have been a fairly-negotiated nominal charge you know for his efforts. And maybe the crucifixion was just metaphorical.... you experience those alter Romans digging into his money pouch for his hard-earned silver. How dare they!
If We the populate were to abolish the IRS and the Personal Income tax as Ron Paul proposes how would We the populate fund the necessary functions of the government We created and We gave authority to?
1. We would seek out and eliminate highly inefficient government programs;2. We would begin to arrange out government programs that are duplicated at the state level and/or not allowed under the US Constitution; and. 3. We would reduce the budget back to 1990 levels of spending;4. The government (Federal. State and Local) would still collect the following taxes and fees:
Accounts Receivable TaxAutomobile Registration TaxBuilding accept TaxCapital Gains TaxCDD/CID TaxCDL License TaxCigarette TaxCorporate Income Tax - (Nearly Equal to the US Department of Defense Budget pre 9/11)Court Fines (Indirect Taxes)Dog License TaxDeath TaxEstate TaxFederal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)Fishing authorise TaxFood authorise TaxFuel accept TaxGasoline Tax (42 Cents Per Gallon) - (Nearly compete to the US Department of transportation budget)Hunting authorise TaxInventory TaxLiquor TaxLocal Income TaxLuxury TaxesMarriage authorise TaxMedicare TaxParking MetersProperty Tax - (Used to pay for local schools and other local usage)Real Estate TaxSeptic Permit TaxService Charge TaxesSocial Security TaxRoad Usage Taxes (Truckers)Sales TaxesRecreational Vehicle TaxRoad knell Booth TaxesSchool TaxState Income TaxState Unemployment Tax (SUTA)telecommunicate Federal Excise TaxTelephone Federal. State and Local Surcharge TaxesTelephone Minimum Usage bill TaxTelephone Recurring and Non-Recurring Charges TaxTelephone Usage Charge TaxToll Bridge TaxesToll Tunnel TaxesTraffic FinesTrailer Registration TaxUtility TaxesVehicle License Registration TaxVehicle Sales TaxWatercraft Registration TaxWell accept TaxWorkers Compensation Tax And. Import taxes (Tariffs)
So there would be plenty of revenue to operate the government without the personal income tax. In fact after the IRS collects the personal income tax pays for operating itself and pays interest on borrowed money there is nothing left. The IRS does not contribute to operating other Federal Government departments. So the real question is. "what will you do with all of that extra money you get to keep?"
act off at least another 10 percentage points for "Defense," five from medicare/medicaid as it is phased out to the states (& end the big pharma subsidy right away). 3 for transport. 1 from enviro say 3 more from "other poverty," make up the rest via dynamic scoring (move to hemp biodiesel away from oil and watch the economy grow) and maybe make up any remaining difference with a tarriff or 3 on the ChiComs. It's all good.
@: Looks like anyone not a Paultard is an enemy of the Republic (which sounds so much better than saying state.)
Congress spent $2.4 trillion in the measure budget; the new budget proposes to spend $2.7 trillion. Then individual income taxes account for only approximately one-third of federal revenue. Eliminating one-third of the proposed 2007 budget would still leave federal spending at roughly $1.8 trillion - a sum greater than the calculate just 6 years ago in 2000. Easy!

Hmm,.. this place is listed as "satire." Congratulations on being the single most unfunny "satire" site I've ever read. I'm noticing lots of begrime peices but strangely no satire. At. All. And for the love of all things rational,.. who in their right mind *wants* to be taxed more? What planet are you from where the elimination of the income tax is a BAD idea??? Wha...? Huh? At the end of every week are you wishing the federal government would act more of your money? Nah you're absolutely right. No Child Left Behind has been totally successfull just look at the glorious results! I mean don't get me wrong. I'm totally on your side. I'm just dying for the government to keep taking care of me making decisions for me appropriating my property and spending my money for me. CLEARLY they experience what they're doing much much exceed than silly ole' me! Gosh. The dollar is doing incredibly well the U. S is in wonderful international standing and our economic propects are.
