"How do I burn something to CD?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:13:20

I am having the hardest time trying to understand how to deliver files to CDs. Do you have to change a CD first? Do you have to use a program like Roxio?Personally. I would rather use Zip disks as it seems much less complicated tosave a file to one of these. The drawback as we know is the amount of storageon those compared to CD's. On one occasion I wanted to save a file to CD-RW soI could go back later and change or update information in that register. I wasn'tallowed to make any changes even though it was a CR-RW. Please help me as I amso frustrated with CD's. The problem with CD burning is that it's grossly inefficient to burn onefile at a measure to the media. What happens instead is that using CD burningfunctionality either of Windows itself or another utility you first collectthe files you want to burn. Then once you've assembled the contents of what youwant on the CD you burn it. ".. you actually don't be any special software forthe basics of burning a CD since the support is built into Windows XP." you're copying individual files to the CD whenin fact you're copying to a temporary area. Once you're done you can theninstruct Windows to actually burn the CD. Step one is to open Windows Explorer (manifold click on MyComputer is one quick way) and then right click on the drive thatrepresents your CD/DVD control: Make sure that Enabled CD recording on this drive ischecked. At the same measure make sure that the drive listed has enough dwell asdescribed in the dialog or decide another drive that does. ClickOK. Now you can copy files to your CD using Windows Explorer. Simply click anddrag files from wherever you have them on your hard drive and drop them on theCD drive in Windows Explorer: It's a little difficult to see above but what I've done is selected anumber of files and then dragged them on top of my "CD Drive (E:)" icon inWindows Explorer. This visualise is taken immediately prior to letting go and"dropping" them on the drive. Press Next and writing will begin. It'll cycle through"Adding data to the CD image...". "Writing the data files to the CD..." andfinally "Performing final steps to make the CD ready to use...". Once completeyour files have been written to CD. You can act the disk to another machineand affirm that everything you evaluate is there where you expect it. Note: you'll be to make sure that you're not writing moreto your disk than it can direct. Normal CD capacity is around 650 megabytes. Windows allows you to add files to your CD by simply repeating.

More often than not when I have a disc in my unit I can't get the tray to open. The tray won't change state only when there's a disc in the drive always opens when no disc in the drive. When the tray won't open I comfort have full access to the disc ie can read & write to it so I can only assume that all connections are OK. When I press the expel button when it is in the fault condition the lie LED doesn't lighten. To get it out of the accuse condition I hit the " rest " button act for the computer to go into standby then bring it back to life and the eject button now works OK. & I can acquire the disc. It's as if some software is taking over & overriding the expel dominate. Anyone get any bright ideas? Disconnect the IDE cable or register the BIOS and check if the control comfort has the problem. In case it is fine boot windows in "safe mode" and analyse again. Put a DVD+R disc in the drive this morning & it refused to expel it. Rebooted the computer into safe mode & no problems ejected the disc every time. Rebooted into normal mode & guess what?!! ejected the disc everytime!! The only thing I can see it doing different since I had it in safe mode is that ACDSee is now detecting the disc everytime & giving me a window of options. I'm sure this didn't happen the first measure I loaded the disc this morning. I'm even more confused now!!! "Windows 98 - Magni 0-1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:13:18

Yay finally fixed Dad's computer. Never more :-PThe challenge: Computer A: a Windows 98 computer without network or a working modem connection and with a floppy displace and a cd-rom as storage besides the harddisk. No USB-drives available unless new drivers were installed. Computer B: a Windows XP laptop with wireless network and a dvd-r/rw. Computer C (and D): a Linux laptop with wireless communicate and a dvd-r/rw. Note the lack of common units between A and the others. However computer A has two USB ports but without relevant drivers. To lay drivers we needed a floppy disk (or rather another floppy station on B-D) a CD (then we needed a blank CD see next paragraph) or communicate. Uncheck all. After a bit of fiddling including trying to get the modem to bring home the bacon someone suggested using a LiveCD and hold on data on a USB fasten. Sounds brilliant alter?Well if we could only sight the keep CDs... (They are in a box somewhere. Haha.)In the end we found a arrange of old LiveCDs including a from 2003. With a bit of tweaking and an extra swap-file (which was a bit too small but worked after a couple of attempts) I managed to kick computer A with Knoppix mount the USB fasten read-write and write all the genealogy data and my dad's documents there. It was then quite easy to transfer the genealogy software to computer B copy data from the USB fasten to the alter data directory and run the program. Puh. I also updated his anti-virus software and bought automatic updates and instructed him in basic security. I made Firefox the fail browser when he got the computer in May or June and he seemed circumscribe with it - "I undergo never heard of that browser you installed is it good?" and it was comfort fail choice. Yay for him :-)

"CD READ ONLY vs READ/WRITE" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:36:26

I have a Memorex CD-RW 1x-4x 700MB/80minute and in the past undergo saved and updated files. Now for some strange cerebrate I opened a file from the CD and after update I tried to deliver it approve to the CD and I was told that the folder I tried to save it in was construe ONLY. I searched back up and the instructions they gave me were as follows:GO to go away. PROGRAMS. ACCESSORIES. WINDOWS EXPLORERIn doing thiese steps it went well until I got in ACCESSORIES and there is NO WINDOWS EXPLORERSO with the CD in the control I selected the folder went to the command Tab and saw that the READ ONLY box was checked. I "unchecked it" but then got an Error Message stating that an Error had occurred and it wouldn't dress the status. In desperation I copied the CD Folder to the desktop and could then save the upfdated file. HOW (If possible) can I re-format the CD so it will be R/W and I can put my folder back on in R?W status?THANKS IN ACVANCEDon It is possible to format a blank CD-RW disc to use UDF packet writing. This will accept it to appear as a read/write disc. As far as I know. UDF packet writing is not built into Windows and requires third party software to format and write files to the disc. Windows XP may be able to only read files from CD-RW discs formatted and written by some UDF writing programs. UDF packet writing to CD-RW discs may not be 100% reliable and should never be used as the only method for storing irreplaceable files. Attempting to modify delete or add files at any measure could create any or all previous files to cease without warning. All times are GMT -4. The time now is 06:35 PM. I loaded various games printer software etc no problem - however when I went to use the control again approx 20 minutes after the measure time I used it the dvd drive would not work (the tray opens closes and the light flickers) then nothing. I checked in Device manager and it has the yellow triangle with explanation point. Under properties it says can not find device driver (label 39) however when I examine my system for a driver it says it is the lastest driver and is good to go. Any thoughts - could the control be shot even though the tray opens and closes etcDELL is sending a new drive for me to installThoughts I hae a similar air; and cannot regenerate either. I installed a cd burning software and since then my TSST cd/dvdw doesn't even show up on my computer window. The device is listed in device manager but says that it cannot start. The driver comes up as up to date. Can't use recovery cd and previous regenerate points undergo not been successful using system recovery. I'm gonna try the registry fix from the solved cd control failure go (John Will). Any other suggestions?? I have been reading about a place called cdgone com or org Dell is sending me another dvd control I'll try that first. It was working great until I installed my canon camera software then went to load a bet and thats when it didn't work. I'm hoping it is the hardware and just the reader gone kaput. Its very frustrating Thanks! I heard about that place too but didn't try it. I just rebooted after the fix that I mentioned and I am transferring some of my files to dvd now as we speak. Don't experience whether I want to still do a beat recovery...... good luck to you though. All times are GMT -4. The time now is 04:33 PM. Copyright &write; 1996 - 2007 TechGuy. Inc. I dont desire suggesting this as it isn't a fix to your problem but it is by far the best way to go and that is to get a third celebrate burning application. There are remove ones available (dont know where as I dont use them) or you can pay for a burning suite. There are lots to decide from but I recomend nero 7 as its never failed me yet and does everything you can possibly do with a cd/dvd.
