Probably not. Most internal DVD/CD units read fairly quickly so unless you undergo some kind of blazingly abstain external reader I disbelieve you'd see much difference.
Depends on 1) which Mac. 2) which internal optical control and 3) how large a collection you have. I evaluate you posted you have a mini well the slimline optical drives in the mini (and Macbook) are not good. (I've heard rumors that the new C2D mini ships with innovate DVR-KO6 instead of crappy Matshita drives which would be good news if adjust but no one here has verified this yet.)If you really are just interested in importing your cd collection if that collection isn't too large and you're not in a go and you don't care about ripping/importing dvds at all your internal control will probably be fine. You can turn error correction on within iTunes preferences and that will help verify you get a good rip. With Macs if you do go external go firewire instead of USB. Many of us sight a good full-size 5.25" optical control in an external firewire enclosure invaluable especially considering how inexpensive it is--for instance. Pioneer 111D and 112's can easily be had for <$30. Just pop it into a 5.25 firewire enclosure and off you go. Significantly faster firmware capable of being flashed better error correction much better burning less prickly with media etc. But we're asking a lot more of our optical drives than merely importing cds. Of cover there's no reason why you undergo to use your mini or an external optical drive plugged into it to rip and import your cds at all--you can use any computer and optical control to rip your cds into Apple lossless then just draw and drop those files into your iTunes library associated with the mini.

I've got a new mini; purchsed mid August. It's got the Matshit drive. Just for itunes for importing. My mini replaced my DVD player. Maybe that's not a good idea considering the not so good Matshit drive?I've got a Plextor 12/10/32. I tried it on USB (yes error correction is on) and it was blazing fast. Each CD finished around 28x. Yes it's in an outboard 5.25 USB/Firewire enclosure. Sticks out about an advance.. non-issue. I didn't consider Firewire. I'll give it a try thanks for the tip. Do I need to flash anything? How's the quality of downloading CD's from the mac music store compared to importing from a CD? (or should I affix this one separately)BTW thanks for the great tips.
For dvd playback the drive isn't the problem it's the software player performance and OS X. For playback a innovate wouldn't do any exceed than a Matshita. You'll have to act until Leopard to see if there's any improvement and then you can decide whether you're happy with it.

Sticks out about an inch.. non-issue. I didn't believe Firewire. I'll give it a try thanks for the tip. Do I be to flash anything?
No not if all you're doing is importing cds. abstain isn't everything fast and accurate is. You be to import once and be done. I'd forbid flashing firmware as well. There's always a risk flashing firmware--and since you're only doing cds you don't need to. The real benefits of 5.25 external firewire superdrives go into compete with dvds--and flashing them in request to shift riplock to rip discs from different regions etc. So since you're primarily music at this point just enjoy your system and don't assay over-complicating it. But if and when you do go away dealing with ripping and backing up your dvd collection just know you undergo options.
Easy enough to run some tests for yourself--some people can easily comprehend the difference between Apple lossless and either 128 or 256 iTunes AAC--others have difficulty--a lot depends on the write of music you comprehend to how well it's been mastered the quality of your domiciliate audio system and on and on. What we comprehend is very subjective. I evaluate the 256 stuff from the iTMS is pretty darn good. Years ago when storage wasn't so cheap my iTunes library was 192 AAC. Then I started getting into SACD and DVD-A and I started re-evaluating. Eventually I re-imported everything. And these days with 500GB hard drives available for $100 or so it's hard not to advise just ripping everything once as Apple lossless. Then box up your cds and put them in storage.
I'm mostly concerned with burning out the laser in the mini. In my PC. I use a lite-on DVDROM for ripping DVD's as I've heard/seen using the same control for both (rip/destroy) ordain wear out the laser. I only imported a few CD's with my Plextor USB as I entangle it was just too fast. Coming from EAC software on my PC my goal was go a little faster and lock the rip speed of my Plextor but it doesn't seem possible with itunes software. Did I miss something? AnyDVD. EAC etc. allows the speed to be set. Can you clarify on the itunes music store 256? My first month with itunes and mac. Also re-evaluating/re-importing????I do intend to go external for the backup.
I wouldn't mind about that. The mini is inexpensive so are most of its components and you're going to be using it desire a consumer electronics device. If anything is going to go do by with the built-in drive it'll show up within the first year and you'll be covered by warranty. And the optical control is a cheap POS regardless no comprehend worrying about it.
Some drives are exceed rippers for dvd because they are unlocked some are exceed at burning certain dvd media because they have exceed create verbally strategies all of that really depends what firmware you decide and whether you're willing to radiate them. It's also mostly about dvd performance not cd. It's much easier to flash on the Windows align. Apple hinders flashing by.
