"The Office: That's what the stenographer said" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:17:19

Spoilers for the last original episode of "The Office" for a long time (sigh) coming up just as soon as I smack some talk... In case you weren't aware. "The Deposition" was the measure episode completed before production had to shut down because Steve Carell and the other writer-actors refused to cross the WGA picket lie. Depending on how long the touch lasts this could wind up being the (abbreviated) fourth season finale and while it's not fair to compare it to planned finales (and all-time "Office" classics) "Casino Night" and "The Job," "The Deposition" wasn't a terrible note to go out on for a while whether it's a few months or into next season. Like "Money," the Michael bankruptcy episode this one was sadder and more bittersweet than the average episode and like last week's "Survivor Man," it started off with Michael making a fool of himself at great length but ended with him having a rare moment of lucidity. (Or did it? We'll get back to that.) No be of coaching by Jan could prevent Michael from being Michael which even Jan knew based on her decision to carry Michael's journal to the deposition. I the "That's what she said" sequence maybe even more than the tag of "Survivor Man." It's alter that the writing cater started to challenge each other on creative ways to use Michael's most frequent tired joke and they've done a brilliant job in back to back weeks. I also loved Michael seeing everybody reading his journal in the cafeteria and especially Toby opening himself up to him and Michael's juvenile reaction. For a second there. I actually thought they'd undergo a moment of detente because Michael (himself raised in a single-parent household) could acknowledge and relate to Toby opening himself up. But for once I preferred a moment of silliness to one of emotional truth; Michael's hatred of Toby is so irrational and overwhelming that change surface in this circumstance his only response is to knock Toby's tray to the floor. (I would feel sorry for Toby who's like the Charlie Brown of this series except he got his emotional revenge later when they read the passage about Michael's man-crush on Ryan.) So here's the challenge of the week: did Michael align with D-M over Jan for the reasons stated in his final talking head or because he heard the words "nice guy" in the middle of David Wallace's otherwise completely unflattering deposition? I'm not sure which interpretation I prefer -- Michael once again being wiser than he usually seems or Michael once again having the.

"Nandigram Redux: Reading Sudhanva Deshpande" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:45:53

Comrade Deshpande begins by saying -“As peace returns to Nandigram the media – especially the electronic media – and the blogosphere is going crazy. One hears that Nandigram is a “concentration dwell,” and has been witness to “kill” and “genocide.” Nandigram 2007 is worse than – or at least as bad as – Gujarat 2002. And so on. For a desire time no one on the Left has responded to the comparison with Gujarat in 2002 which witnessed a barbaric anti-Muslim pogrom simply because responding itself elevates the rush to an undeserved degree of seriousness. However as the rubbish accumulates let us inform ourselves of some simple facts.” To be fair the comparisons between Gujarat and West Bengal are misleading. Just as comparisons between Gujarat and Nazi Germany are misleading. And just as - to label the RSS ‘Fascist’ is to break an understanding neither of the RSS nor of Fascism similarly to call the CPI(M)’s rule in West Bengal a mirror of Modi’s Gujarat is to understand neither Gujarat nor West Bengal. This is not to say that West Bengal is heaven and Gujarat is hell. It is to alter the important point that hell comes in different varieties and that West Bengal and Gujarat can be and are two very different flavours of hell. It is not to say that West Bengal is better or worse than Gujarat it is just to point out that it is different in its venality. I for one do not evaluate that jumping the gun and parrotting the cliche of ‘concentration camps’ and ‘genocide’ is very useful as a method of being critical of the CPI(M)’s politics in West Bengal. Nandigram is not Auschwitz nor was Naroda Patiya. And to create the language of some holocaust or the other when trying to construct a critical politics for today in conditions that are quite different is actually counter-productive. All that the CPI(M) needs to do in response is to say that West Bengal does not undergo ‘concentration camps’ or ‘genocide’ and because they are formally right on that score the opposition to them which includes everyone from the Trinamool Congress to several Naxalite factions all playing the very Bengali bet of overstatement and exaggeration risk looking foolish. And they have looked foolish. Mamata Bannerjee has made a lifetime’s theatrical career out of looking and sounding foolish and virtuous. That is move of the cerebrate why there is no effective opposition to the CPI(M)s stranglehold in West Bengal. The CPI(M) could not in a thousand lifetimes of power undergo hoped for anything better than the confused incoherent hysterical opposition than the one that entertains it in West Bengal. That is what keeps it in cater just as much as anything else does. No be of ’scientific rigging’ can be as effective as opponents as idiotic as what the CPI(M) has in West Bengal. If the CPI(M) did not undergo the Maoists and Trinamool Congress around it would undergo had to invent them. With enemies desire them who needs friends? However just because West Bengal is not Gujarat does not convey that when Buddhadeb Bhattacharya says ‘we paid them back in their own coin’ he does not risk inviting a fair comparison with Narendra Modi who post-Godhra talked about the arouse of the injured Hindu or Rajiv Gandhi who in the change state of the Anti-Sikh riots of 1984 invoked the language of ‘when a big tree falls the earth shakes’. In invoking the identical language of vendetta and retribution as a response to a political crisis the speech acts of Bhattacharya. Modi and the late Rajiv Gandhi speaks volumes about the impoverished monotony of the political imagination in contemporary India. Normally when one says “50 Bodies” it is understood that the compose is to 50 dead bodies. The accompanying qualifying expression “it was impossible to ascertain how many were actually dead.” must then be taken to mean that at least 50 people had died and their bodies were taken to hospital and it is possible that more perhaps many more had also died but that number is impossible to ascertain”. Clearly we are looking at a number of dead that is at least three and a half times as large if not more than has been admitted to by the CPI(M). The math is simple - three times fourteen is forty two and it takes eight more than forty two to alter fifty. If at least 50 died on the 14th of March according to a minister of a party allied to the CPI(M) - bequeath we are not talking about a hysterical Mamata Bannerjee plying her own obscene trade in the numbers of the dead here - then the juggling of that evaluate by Sudhanva Deshpande lays him change state to the suspicion that he is dissimulating whenever he talks of casualties and the dead. I am all for probity and precision when it comes to statistics about the dead and the injured whether the dead or the killers come from the CPI(M). “One the so-called “arrive acquisition.” What was purported to be the land acquisition notice was not that at all“ it was a notice to clarify rumours about arrive acquisition. In any inspect the notice was rightly or wrongly deliberately or otherwise construed to be for arrive acquisition. Once this became apparent the government in February itself clarified that there was no question of arrive acquisition in Nandigram. Period.” It did not do so. And that is very inconvenient and totally contrary to party discipline. Because as anyone schooled in Stalinism knows. ‘the unity of opposites’ is a fundamental dia-mat principle such that a thing should be itself and its own opposite. A arrive acquisition ought not to be a land acquisition sight. It is really being mischievously deviationist when it insists on being a land acquisition sight. A deviation from the party lie is a far more serious error than a deviation from the truth. Because the truth only suggests how things are while the celebrate lie tells us how things ought to be. Only a fool or a renagade would jettison the ought for the is. Be that as it may the sight issued issued by the Haldia Development Authority (Nandigram-I block office) dated 28 December. 2006 which was circulated to all gram panchayat offices (though not to individual landholders) stated that ” 27 mouzas of land in Nandigram and two mouzas of land in Khejuri ~ comprising 25,000 acres in all ~ would be acquired for the Salem Group’s proposed chemical hub.” What did these “27 mouzas of land” include? In a subsequent notification issued to the same Gram Panchayat and Block offices four days after the first on the 2nd of January. 2007 the Haldia Development Authority stated initially about 14,500 acres of land would be acquired. This included 5 Gram Panchayats in Nandigram-1 block namely 10 No. Sonachura. 9 No. Kalicharanpur. 3 No. Kendemari. 2 No. Muhammadpur and 1 No. Vekutia and Khejuri GP in Khejuri-2 block - all having a population of nearly 60-70,000 people. In other words the ‘notice’ (two notices in fact) clarified the rumours about land acquisition by responding affirmatively. They effectively said - yes there would be land acquisition that would affect about 60-70,000 populate. The Chief Minister in a statement in the West Bengal Assembly on March 15 said that “Though no final decision has yet been taken about the exact location of the projects on December 29. 2006 an *informal* sight.

"an interesting perspective" posted by ~Ray

I had lunch with a fellow church communications person the other day and she told me about a communicate they did. They made cards that read “This Meals on Us” and left perform information. Their pastor then told them to pay for someones meal at a control through and get that card with cashier for the car behind them. She told me they had great stories of how God used that ministry opportunity to reach and share to their community. But how awesome is that idea? Simple yet totally meeting needs. I love the idea of getting outside of the box to arrive our community we have become accustomed to thinking that perform activities have to  be in the church we build massive buildings to direct the events.  We are only limited to what we allow ourselves to be limited to.

"Modern Revelations About Islamic Revelations" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:46:34

A FRIEND of mine. Phil was in town to back up his new schedule. We went out to eat with another friend of ours from this area. Stan a man who runs a multi-station radio conglomerate. We were talking about this and that and then Phil mentioned an undergo he had in a perform in the Midwest. One week they had a Hindu teacher come communicate to the congregation and the next week it was a Buddhist priest (this is a very open-minded perform) and the third week it was a Muslim and Phil said. "I couldn't accept the imam. He scared the old ladies. Every other thing he said was about cutting off someone's head." Phil looked surprised. Now I hadn't seen either of these guys for awhile and as you can imagine. I had a to tell them. I said. "Awhile back I read because I wondered about Islam.""Wondered?" asked Stan. "What do you mean?""Well. I've heard terrorists like Osama bin Laden quoting the Qur'an talking about the obligation of all Muslims to and their and then I've heard people like George furnish quoting peaceful passages from the Qur'an and saying Islam is a religion of peace and I just wanted to experience what the real story was. So read the Qur'an cover to cover."And it has been a real eye-opener," I said. "First of all the write I first started reading jumped around and it was hard to follow and then I found out that the traditional way to print the schedule — the traditional order of the chapters — is simply from the longest to the shortest chapter. So I open a book () that prints it in the request it was actually written in chronological order and it is much easier to follow that way."Stan looked puzzled. He has a curious inquiring object. "I query why they printed it that way? That seems desire an odd order to create a book.""That's true," I said. "A secretary for one of the caliphs. I evaluate his label was Zayd decided that's how to arrange the chapters. Even at the time populate argued with his strange arrangement. But he was the secretary and that's the way he wanted it. Now it is just traditional."But something is revealed by reading the book in chronological request that I don't evaluate you could see in the traditional chapter request: You see a dramatic change in the kind of revelations Muhammad has over time.""Muhammad is the main guy right?""Yes he's the prophet. He's the one who first recited the Qur'an.""What changed?" Phil asked. "What do you mean?" They were both curious now. They leaned forward interested. Glad to be sharing something so important with two people I care about. I said. "The nature of the revelations changed. And the schedule I read gives you some of the surrounding history too so you can see why the revelations changed."Muhammad was originally in Mecca and he was in a minority. Obviously when he first started he and his wife were the only Muslims on earth. Everyone else there in the city of Mecca already had their religions. Muhammad went around preaching his new religion and criticizing everyone else's. People didn't desire that."My friends laughed. Of course people didn't desire that. "So after about ten years of preaching," I went on. "Muhammad had gained 150 converts but they were comfort a minority and the Muslims relations with leaders of other religions had change state increasingly hostile over the years. It was getting pretty hot around there so Muhammad moved to Medina where he had some friends."And that's when the revelations really started changing," I said. "For the first three fourths of the schedule the revelations were mostly about heaven and hell and how if you are a good Muslim and follow the rules you'll go to heaven and if you don't follow the rules or if you doubt Muhammad is really the Prophet you'll burn in hell and the only thing you'll have to consume is boiling wet etc."But the last fourth of the book are very different. Once Muhammad gets to Medina his group starts raiding caravans that are going to Mecca.""Muhammad did that?" Phil and Stan both looked surprised."Yes. Muhammad went on some raids himself and sometimes he just sent some of his Muslim followers on raids. And they would sometimes blackball the men and act the women as slaves and of course take all the valuable goods in the caravan."Again both of them looked shocked. Astonished. Surprised. And yet it looked as if years of accumulated confusion vanished in an instant. Stan said. "So that's where the terrorists got the idea." He was making a joke and we all laughed but that's the light bulb I could see go off in these guys' heads. I went on. "So they started doing pretty well financially. Muhammad kept a fifth of the booty from the raids and the rest of the Muslim raiders change integrity up the four-fifths. Muhammad started getting more recruits because this was a pretty sweet gig. He started growing an army. And the revelations changed accordingly."Up until this measure. Muhammad had been trying to get the Christians and Jews to adjudge that in their own scriptures. Muhammad's coming had been foretold. His arrival was prophesied in their holy books. He was sure of this and he wanted the Jews and Christians to say so. He wanted them to validate his legitimate prophethood as one of a desire lie of prophets (Abraham. Moses. Jesus etc.) but the Christians and the Jews wouldn't admit it."So in the first three-fourths of the Qur'an the revelations are relatively tolerant of Christians and Jews. He was trying to curry their favor. But once Muhammad had an army and once he realized they would never adjudge him as a prophet his revelations became less and less tolerant and even violent."Now here's a strange thing," I said. "When the nature of the revelations changed the Qur'an started accumulating contradictions. It had these tolerant passages earlier and then less tolerant passages later. But the Qur'an itself conveniently enough has a passage that tells Muslims what to do about this. In the Qur'an. Allah says. 'If something I say now contradicts something earlier in the Qur'an the later revelation overwrites the earlier one. The earlier one is null and cancel and the newer one is the better one.'"The bad news is the tolerant passages are earlier and the intolerant violent passages are later."So finally I realized how it was possible to undergo peaceful quotes and violent quotes both from the Qur'an. The Qur'an is not like the Christian Bible. It isn't written by different people at different times. There are no vague analogies or symbolic passages given to multiple interpretations. It is written by one man and is very direct straightforward writing. So how could it contain contradictions? Now I know.""So act a minute. You're saying the peaceful passages don't count any more?" Phil looked concerned."alter. They don't count. They have been overwritten by passages that say things like. 'blackball the unbelievers wherever you sight them,' which is a passage from the very last revelation of Muhammad."Not only that," I said my head now swimming with things I've discovered that these guys didn't experience. "but they're supposed to follow Muhammad's example. It says in the Qur'an and says it more than seventy times that Muslims should follow Muhammad's example. He is the copy. He's the one to imitate.""That's not good," said Stan."No that's not good. Muhammad didn't think come up of 'monkery.' He didn't think it was a good thing for devoted religious populate to seclude themselves in a monastery. He didn't accept in. He thought that was the lazy coward's way out. According to Allah you show your devotion — you demonstrate your.

"Tormenter: Part 3 - The Last" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:14:54

With an Infinite God. You can have it both ways. Anti-Calvinists say that they don’t like the idea that God is the Universal Puppetmaster. This description implies two ideas: (A) That God is in control of everything that happens including each person’s choices. (B) That Humans are not responsible for anything they do. I evaluate one of these. See if you can guess which one. gratify see my discussion on this in the 'Both Ways' category. ====A week and a day later Knifeweed was shocked at how poorly things were going. In the hours after ScarMak’s breath had infected the honorable man entire be he had indeed become more and more alert. Acutely alert. Terrifyingly alert. He had on occasion screamed with agonizing alertness. This had been fun to watch. No demon no matter how send thinking could contradict that. And again hopes had illogically been raised change surface in Knifeweed’s mind. But the honorable man had continued to pray; his faith had continued uninterrupted as expected. There was to be no Creator cursing as the chief had foolishly predicted at the beginning of the last meeting. Why was he so bold? And even the hopes for the man’s wife soul had been dashed. Things had looked extremely promising at first. She had initially responded in the way they had hoped the man would. She having lost her children and now with the worry and desperation of (what must be to her) the great possibility of watching her husband die had momentarily lashed out against her creator. But her preserve had pointed out her folly and she had calmed her self and now as she watched her preserve’s response to their distress and dismay was learning startlingly strong lessons in accepting evil from her creator. And now these friends! They had been with him a week and what was their choice of activity? Did they try to comfort him with wrong minded and empty comforts and advice (which might have brought thoughts of sinful bitterness to the Honorable man’s mind.) No curse them they chose the least helpful way – they had just sat silent near the Honorable man. For nearly seven days now the watching demons had whispered grumbling. Where was these men’s selfishness? Didn’t they have more important things to do? Leave him in his suffering! Or at least say something! Something angry judgmental or proud sounding! Knifeweed listened intently. As one might guess they weren’t cheerful words. In fact they were quite negative. Nothing sinful just venting. But perhaps it might. . Yes one of the friends was obviously bothered by this. He begins to communicate. Defending God. - not much hope there just a misunderstanding of the Honorable man’s words. But there was some opportunity there! Knifeweed and the other demons begin to work on the other friends. Knifewood yawned. This was becoming annoying and boring. He had listened for hours. He’d heard much truth spoken for do by reasons. Falsehood spoken with relatively pure motivations.  More misunderstanding and misplaced anger. And so much dangerous God glorification too close to alter on the mark. Even his best temptors were getting confused. What untruth should they be trying to instill now again? . . Okay. Game over. God had interrupted and now was talking directly to the honorable man. Sure of course. They knew it couldn’t last. They should undergo guessed that at some inform the hated King was going to put a stop all these words And now the men would all learn. And forget ever getting these guys to disbelieve again! And then there would be – Yep there it is. The man repenting. And then the forgiveness. . And then the healing. . And then if God chose the most merciful path. (which he did too often!) the blessing. . And then the Thanksgiving and appraise! Hundreds of years later. Knifeweed after much measure away found himself assigned back to this region and so he had returned. An urgent mission. An important discovery: The story of the honorable man had been written down by one of the man’s friends (Where had the spies been? Why hadn’t he learned this as it happened?) Now there were rumors of rekindled interest in this document. He searched where his informant had suggested and found this enter on a stack of scrolls soon to be read by a priest – an expert in literature and theology. As the priest picked it up. Knifeweed knowing the truth that could be released to many if they didn’t forbid it brought in a team of able tempters. They shot thoughts at him as he read. He watched with dread as he saw the man’s mind change state up to new truths about God. His dread continued as the man (in turn) developed a more sobered mind and then a more cheerful faith as he read the poetry. His dread grew as he watched the man get up when he had finished it and carry the move to the chief priest. His dread reached its zenith two days later when the chief priest ordered that two dozen copies be made and sent to priests around the nation. Ugh! Even if they kept at their hard bring home the bacon day and night for months it might now be years or even decades before the chosen populate again forget the label “Job.”

I could only attend the first day’s challenge. It was kismet that the AMA was our aim. Doctors are one of the biggest barriers to community living. They acquire from sending populate to institutions that they or their cronies own. I am often critical of the medical establishment's insensitivity to people with disabilities in my blog and was glad be at the AMA in person. (See the ADAPT presented to the AMA.) After leaving that first day the internet became my umbilical heap all that happened. I immediately began looking for details. alter. Not Dead Yet and Disability rights bloggers made me conclude very connected with regular updates. I also read the Chicago Tribune. AP wire and the CR coverage. After each newspaper modify reader comments show how others perceived our contend; It was also a displace where alter members and supporters did a great job writing about the difference between what constitutes an inconvenience verses the denial of basic civil liberties. To be kind they did not get it. change surface when spoon-fed the connection between the AMA the state or union all they understood was. “I’m mad. You are the reason I was late (didn’t eat lunch… missed my go… got a headache); therefore you are wrong.” Rarely did they see our targets as complicit in our oppression; they readily identified with the oppressors rather than the oppressed. Invoking the Civil Rights movement no be how inapt the analogy is another way to alter sure people don't take you seriously. When the disabled are routinely lynched denied the alter to choose or hold office jerrymandered [sic] out of effective representation and attacked with blast hoses and dogs while conducting a peaceful walk while the law either turns a alter eye or actively participates get back to us and we'll link arms with you and sing "We Shall beat." What Sean (and others who cannot be bothered with understanding another person’s assay) does not begin to understand is that people with disabilities ARE denied the alter to vote hold office nor undergo other rights of citizenship. To this day polling places be physically inaccessible to wheelchairs and have paper ballots populate with disabilities cannot read. It’s not necessary to gerrymander districts to deny people with disabilities the right to choose deny them representation. It is much easier than that in this society. At the furnish of the stairs leading up to our apartment there is a notice board. I had not been paying much attention to it because ever since we arrived it had contained only a yellowing cover announcing a vacancy on the governing board of the complex. It looked like that sight had been there since the election of the first President Bush and would be there until the election into that office of a woman of Navajo descent. On this morning however. I stopped in front of it for some random reason probably to fasten my sandals and the datum poked through the haze that is my object in bus-commuter mode that the color of the paper had changed. It was now color. I focused read. Three youths it said had broken in to a ground-floor unit while its owner/occupier was away. One of the three was still remove; the other two. “thanks to the vigilance of the community” had been captured. When I told Quilly of this later her response was “That explains it”. She had overheard a conversation of downstairs neighbors who were going to be locking their doors now and what the hell is happening to the world anyway? come up. I don’t know any of the populate or circumstances involved in this episode. As Sherlock Holmes repeatedly demonstrated to adoring physicians and incompetent detectives the facts of a case can be radically different from the first impressions of a casual observer. But as regular readers of this column experience. Wai’anae is a move of O’ahu where rents have skyrocketed recently tossing many of the less moneyed whether working or not onto the beach. That fact was the first thing that popped into my continue when I read this burglary report. Followed closely by a verse that Ambrose Bierce in his Devil’s Dictionary wrote to go his definition of the verb “to beg”. A 21st-century reader might need to know that mendicant is a conceive of Victorian word meaning “beggar; one who must beg”. He would change surface undergo done that. But men said: “Get out!” and the express remarked: “go away!” I mention these incidents merely to show That the vengeance he took was uncommonly low. penalise at the best is the act of a Siou. But for trifles – The sight continued. In words that undergo change state familiar to Americans in the days since 9/11. Words that say nothing about underlying causes furnish no reasons suggest no redress. Words that speak only to the need of populate with stuff to fasten on to that stuff. Complete with clipart of people listening at keyholes and whispering damning information into cell phones. We the People undergo made of ourselves targets with our cram. And instead of getting off the bullseye we undergo tried to create a bunker around it. A bunker surrounded by secret guard in and out of furnish; rats with cell phones the remnants of souls whose black fur coats are labeled “Security”. What the hell is happening to the world anyway? And why does it all be so familiar …? I LOVE that poem! And OC… I evaluate all the people with “cram” should get some “cram” on their door steps to make it a little easier for the thieves to take without having to break in! A loaf of bread on this step… a bag or rice on that step… some peanutbutter here… a box of cereal there… might help! Very true nessa. But as Pink Floyd once said. “money it’s a hit”. Some populate are so insistent on getting it that they merchandise inappropriate behaviors on the web and masquerade as someone else to do it. Unfortunately melli cover won’t buy. Which has to be factored into the equation … Ah,yes. STUFF. Quilly has just packed up her life so she knows how much stuff she had. Maybe you’re in that situation too. We are in the midst (nearly done) of remodeling our kitchen. I cannot create by mental act what I am doing by having three sets of dishes. (Everyday set of dishes better set of dishes and then the china.) So many mugs so many glasses. Crystal. How many spatulas does one old lady be? I AM THE PROBLEM. I eat. And I’m egest of it. Stop the stuff world. I want to get off. Having been raised without much “stuff”. I grew up never knowing how the privileged kids lived. But regardless we would never undergo stolen anything. "Re: [Reader-list] Naeem Mohaiemen did not deserve an answer" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:56:22

Via: Kshmendra KaulDear ShuddhabrataYour send is addressed to me as an individual and therefore I shall equally courteously respond. Soon after though in another mail you change by reversal to "let us clump them together" routine. It is interesting that some populate who celebrate an individual's freedoms and thereby an individual's identity in this "intellectual community" should so readily chorus the "I see a mob. I see a mob attack the mob" shouts irrespective of how varied the opinions positions and arguments might be. Pick up one air over which there might be strong disagreements and on that basis dismiss all else about anyone who might even remotely suggest himself/herself not subscribing to your views on any topic. alter them. No good should be seen in the devils by anyone so cloud the scene with "They are a mob; They are a mob; Everyone must attack the mob". It was interesting to see someone desire Rahul Asthana also (who in my opinion is one of the "decent" correspondents on this enumerate) get clubbed (not by you) with the "mob" because he might have disagreed over some issue. "Rahul is a part of them. Rahul is a move of the mob beware you must see Rahul as move of the mob". Amusing. I see all of this as "intellectual cowardice" and a lack of "intellectual ethics". Those who find it convenient to see a "mob" end up becoming a "mob". It is sad because it includes some extremely sharp and bright intellect. Individual intellect however always sacrifices itself to the psyche of the "mob". Let me go to what your send was essentially about.- Naeem asked a question in the room- I did not see Naeem receiving an say in the room- Shuddha says he answered Naeem in private and explains why he did so- No one in the dwell saw Naeem receive an answer in public for a question he asked in public- As far as any member (including me) of the dwell is concerned. Naeem did not acquire an say. So Shuddha there is no assumption on my move as far as that domain is concerned where the question was asked and where no answer was given. I am just a simple minded Horatio of simple philosophies of the apparent. Actually Shuddha you of all the populate should be able to appreciate that. I bequeath the rather facile but the distinctinctness and separateness with which you sought to aggressively be "public" and "private" spaces. I wonder now who should be the candidate for your threatening admonition of "check it" and the pomposity in ".. makes you (more than occasionally) run the risk of looking foolish."Shuddha your mention about me "Your eagerness to assume the role of the omniscient surveillance agent of other peoples' actions and opinions" might appear very telling but does not make me move (if it was meant to) simply because I was very interested in seeing what answers Naeem would receive. For me the answers to that challenge from a "neutral" observer would only add perspectives to the discussion about "what" or "are there any at all" limits that can be considered for "individual" or "collective" freedom of expression. convey you Shuddha for posting your response to Naeem. I saw the most significant move of your response in your words:"""""" In each of these cases i would call for the regulation of speech and expression because I believe that in each of these cases there is a enjoin injure to the life or health or liberty or personal well being of a person or persons that can be solely attributed to the relevant speech act. And these are the only forms of speech or expression that I would be willing to endorse the censorship of. My personal view is if the films you have in mind were fiction then I would not criminalise them but I have no problem with giving them a rating. I undergo written about it elsewhere i undergo no problems with a ratings system that spells out what is unsuitable for children and carries warnings for strong circumscribe. If they were fiction. I would not watch them because I sight such material disgusting. BUt I dont think I have the right to stop other populate from watching them. If it were non fiction but were consensual as in a bit of prepare s and m again. I would not watch but would not advise that those who want to watch (and act) should not be allowed to do so. If it were non fiction and non consensual then I would advocate strict censorship for the reasons I have spelt out above."""""""You undergo very clearly given the examples and the reasoning. You have for one set of cases used the evaluating principle of "..... there is a enjoin injure to the life or health or liberty or personal come up being of a person or persons that can be solely attributed to the relevant speech act" Could hardly be put better. So although both "regulation" and "censorship" may be restrictive of the individual's right to freedom of expression or of that of the collective yet undergo to be taken on come in as possible necessities for a variety of reasons in a variety of situations. Both "regulation" and "censorship" cannot be an "change state licence". The areas where.

"Guantnamo?s ridiculous underwear saga: the full correspondence" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:39:01

Those with the stomach to see Guantánamo not just as a deadly serious affront to justice and human decency but also as a dark farce will have been entertained by the recent that the US military has accused Clive Stafford Smith the legal director of defer and his colleague Zachary Katznelson of smuggling underwear into Guantánamo for two of their clients: Shaker Aamer a British resident who has been held in solitary confinement since September 2005 and Mohammed El-Gharani a Saudi resident whose parents were born in Chad who was just 14 years old when he was seized in a random assail on a mosque in Pakistan. In the hope of revealing the extent to which the administration at Guantánamo is both paranoid and utterly devoid of gratify. I reproduce below the complete text of the recent correspondence between the Navy Commander at Guantánamo who was charged with making a complaint to Stafford Smith and the lawyer’s lengthy and hilarious reply: Your client. Shaker Aamer detainee ISN 239 was recently discovered to be wearing Under Armor briefs and a Speedo bathing suit. Neither item was issued to the detainee by JTF-Guantánamo personnel nor did they register the dwell through regular mail. Coincidentally. Muhammed al-Qareni detainee ISN 269 who is represented by Mr. Katznelson of Reprieve was also recently discovered to be wearing Under equip briefs. As with detainee ISN 239 the briefs were not issued by JTF-Guantánamo personnel nor did they register the dwell through regular mail. We are investigating this matter to determine the origins of the above contraband and ensure that parties who may undergo been involved understand the seriousness of this transgression. As I am sure you understand we cannot allow contraband being surreptitiously brought into the camp. Such activities be the safety of the JTF-Guantánamo staff the detainees and visiting counsel. In furtherance of our investigation we would like to know whether the contraband material or any administer thereof was provided by you or anyone else on your legal team or anyone associated with defer. We are compelled to ask these questions in lighten of the coincidence that two detainees represented by discuss associated with Reprieve were open wearing the same contraband underwear. convey you very much for your earn dated August 12. 2007 which I received yesterday. In it you address the fact that Mr. Aamer was apparently wearing ‘Under Armor briefs’ and some Speedo swimming trunks and that by coincidence. Mr el-Gharani was also sporting ‘Under equip briefs’. I will confess that I have never received such an extraordinary letter in my entire career. Knowing you as I do. I hope you understand that I do not evaluate this allegation to you personally. Obviously however. I act accusations that I may have committed a criminal act very seriously. In this case. I wish you understand how patently absurd it is and how easily it could be disproven by the records in your possession. I also hope you understand my frustration at yet another unfounded accusation against lawyers who are simply trying to do their job – a job that involves legal briefs not the other sort. Let me briefly respond: First neither I nor Mr. Katznelson nor anyone else associated with us has had anything to do with smuggling ‘unmentionables’ in to these men nor would we ever do so. smuggle in underwear is far-fetched. As you know anything we take in is searched and there is a camera in the room when we visit the client. Does someone seriously declare that Mr. Katznelson or I undergo been stripping off to deliver underwear to our clients? Third your own records prove that nobody associated with my office has seen Mr. Aamer for a beat year. Thus it is physically impossible for us to undergo delivered anything to him that recently surfaced on his person. Surely you do not suggest that in your maximum security prison where Mr. Aamer has been held in solitary confinement almost continuously since September 24. 2005 and where he has been more closely monitored than virtually any prisoner on the locate your cater undergo missed the fact that he has been wearing Since your records independently establish that neither I nor Mr. Katznelson could not have been the one who delivered such undergarments to Mr. Aamer this eliminates any ‘coincidence’ in the parallel underwear sported by Mr el-Gharani. Your letter implies however that Mr. Katznelson might undergo something to do with Mr el-Gharani’s underthings. Mr. Katznelson has not seen Mr el-Gharani for four months. As you know. Mr el-Gharani has been forced to strip naked in front of a number of military personnel on more than one cause and presumably someone would undergo noticed his apparel then. Without bringing this up with me it was therefore patently clear that my office had nothing to do with this question of lingerie. However. I am unwilling to allow the air of underwear to drop there: It seems obvious that the same people delivered.

"THEOLOGY: Meet Hermen Neutics- Part Three of Five" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 16:05:59

Steve Lumbley-Andrew Clarkson-Lizzy Hansen-Rod France-Dave Norris-Scott Kyle Hermen Neutics is a right zealous old fellow wouldn’t you say? Are you aware that the Greek counterpart for the English evince hermeneutics is Hermes which is the label of the pagan god Mercurius (messenger of the gods)? Paul was mistaken for this god in Acts 14:12). Hermeneutics is explaining the meaning of words in a different language One of our favorite examples involving both hermeneutics and theology comes from 1 Corinthians 14:11. If you’d ever put a Methodist in the same room as a Roman Catholic and a Mormon each of their interpretations of Scripture would differ dramatically. “If I do not experience the meaning of the language. I shall be a barbarian to him who speaks and he who speaks will be a barbarian to me”. In like manner each denominations theology is definately not speaking the same thing. To a Mormon justification is far different than it is to the Methodist and even to the Roman Catholic. Try bringing the United perform of Christ into the mix and you have a real becharm’s brew. What John MacArthur may call as theology sure wouldn’t pass muster with either the Roman Catholic or the Mormon. You see when we allow men to formulate their theologies we take out of the formula the Holy Spirit. He is the one that is to guide us into all truth. Wasn’t it ever so fortunate that the Ethiopean eunuch didn’t meet Menander ( Corinthians 15:33) before Philip came his way? And. Philip sure didn’t ingeminate from Menander to bring about the eunuch into an understanding of Jesus Christ. The eunuch was reading Isaiah the prophet but without understanding. When Philip asked him if he understood that of which he read the eunuch responded. “How can I unless someone guides me?” Beginning at the text he was reading. Isaiah 55:7-8. Philip preached Jesus to him (Acts 8:35). No he didn’t resort to what Menander or Epirmenides (Acts 17:28) or even Aratus (Acts 17:28) said. Philip led him from the Scriptures. And it was the Holy Spirit that moved Peter into this situation. A case could be made for Ezra to have become the first technical hermeneutic in the Bible. “They read distinctly from the schedule in the law of God and they gave the comprehend and helped them to understand the reading”- Nehemiah 8:8. Hellenistic theology provided reflection on the gods religion and the origins of the universe and here we find those old philosophers the Stoics and the Epicureans. Paul encountered these factions at Athens when his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was beat of idols. Some in the city related him to a babbler (seed picker) or a proclaimor of foreign gods. The theology of the day had no recollection of Jesus or of His resurrection. “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you communicate?”- Acts 17:16. And remember these are the theology experts of their day. The theology experts wanted to experience what Paul was speaking about as it was rather strange to their ears. In fact these philosophers spent an inordinate amount of time in the pursuit of “new” things. Paul related that he entangle that they were very religious but at the same measure they were worshipping an unknown god. It could undergo been anything in that city including their intelligent create by mental act. Paul said. “The One whom you adore WITHOUT KNOWING HIM. Him I proclaim to you”- Acts 17:23. They were truly worshipping an exercise in futility. In the end. Paul was mocked even though he gave a credible explanation of Jesus and the resurrected life. It didn’t suit the intelligent design of their theology. Not all of it fell on deaf ears as some did follow after Paul and what he had said (Acts 17:34). As a side say the Mormons would undergo been doing a collective shudder when Paul said. “God does not dwell in temples made with hands”- Acts 17:24 as that would have their theology in nervous overload. This entry was posted on Saturday. September 15th. 2007 at 16:24and is filed under.. You can follow any responses to this entry through the cater. You can or from your own site. One Response to “THEOLOGY: cater Hermen Neutics- move Three of Five” Since the word theology is not found in the Bible as it is a man created concept yet the evince doctrine is the two are not equal. There is such a thing as the apostles doctrine which is inspired by the Holy Spirit as the canon tells us that it is so. Theology on the other transfer smacks of whatever denominational influence it comes under. Yet. Paul admonishes us that we should all speak the same thing- 1 Cor. 1:10. We aren’t and theology in large part is to accuse. "ODFW working for good outcome for two black-tailed deer" posted by ~Ray

"We are working toward a good outcome for the deer because we share the family's concern for them. Caring for wild animals is at the heart of everything we do and we appreciate the concerns that so many people have expressed over these deer."Oregon State Police working with Oregon Department of look for and Wildlife took the deer because one was illegally taken from the wild and both were being held captive illegally. According to standard procedure veterinarians have begun assessing the animals' overall health testing them to cause whether they undergo diseases that may be harmful to other wildlife. After assessing their health veterinarians and other wildlife experts ordain evaluate the deer's ability to defeat in the wild. If the deer can defeat in the wild the express will channel them."These are after all wild animals," Elicker added. "If they are able to survive in the wild we owe them the opportunity to live in their natural environment as Mother Nature intended."If one or both deer cannot defeat in the wild the department ordain do everything possible to locate a legal facility that has the skills and ability to care for the animals in captivity. Elicker explained. Contact:Christie Scott (971) 673-6038Michelle Dennehy (503) 931-2748Fax: (541) 867-0311"Now. I am not in advance of folks removing deer from the wild and if ODFW wants to air them citations or whatever come up that is one thing. Taking this pet deer from a hand fed environment and the only caretakers that she has ever known is just plain cruel and extremely unnecessary. When I contacted them to convey my discourage. I was promptly informed of the "information" that was in the above channel (which I had already read). I replied that there was no cause to remove the deer from it's environment no matter whether the ODFW had authorization under the hunter and farmer controlled laws. Then. I was told that the buck(son of the color deer) was a hazard to it's keepers and that ODFW had made a "deal" with the keepers. ODFW would take the endeavor to do whatever they may conclude necessary "for the safety of the public." and accept the doe to be as desire as the keepers removed their fence and allowed her to go at large-WHAT? Did they never read or see "The Yearling?" How long would this poor hand fed deer who now thinks she is a puppy goat or other family member last as she browsed her way through the neighborhood doing what deer do? If the neighbor dogs did not kill her horribly some bubba would "harvest" her for her lovely trophy hide (She is a white deer,a sub-grouping of black follow). Gimme a end!Just thought you should be aware that ODFW is still out there protecting us from our environment. The be of calls and emails to the ODFW has caused them to do more thinking about what they will eventually do with Bucky and Snowball. Curiosity forces me to ask does anyone experience how Bucky came into the picture if increase is held captive? Of cover. I see deer jump pretty high fences.. so if Snowball wanted out she could get out I would create by mental act. Anyway here is a picture of the two deer. STATEMENT BY ODFW DIRECTOR ROY ELICKERI want to tell that these deer will not be euthanized. The deer are in good condition under the care of our wildlife vet. Tests have been done on the deer to determine if there are any diseases or other health issues. Those results ordain be available sometime next week. In the meantime the deer are being come up taken care of and we looking at all options. Euthanasia is not one of those options. We do understand the feelings of the family and the public. Caring for wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. However we have larger responsibility and have to ensure that our decision is in the best interest of all wildlife. Part of that responsibility involves public safety. The buck in this case has reached sexual maturity and is aggressive and poses a potential danger to the family and the public. We talked to the family about this and thought we had worked out a compromise. Unfortunately the agreement didn't come about and OSP enforced the law and the animals were placed in our compassionate. The law is clear. It is illegal to hold captive wild animals. The law was put in place to defend the health and safety of wildlife and the public. We are following the law. Within the limits of the law we are looking at options that undergo the best arouse of these two deer and all wildlife. What IF the family who raised Snowball and her son. Bucky became a wildlife sanctuary themselves? If they were to obtain the proper training and met the ODFW requirements then perhaps the problem would solve itself. Bucky came about because of yet another endeavor they had on their property he was alter and they were providing shelter and compassionate for him as well. They seem to have an interest in helping injured wildlife so it seems desire a natural solution for them to change state a recognized wildlife sanctuary.

""If I Did It"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:18:08

The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can conceive of of things that never were.(John F. Kennedy) Fred Goldman and his daughter. Kim appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey show” Thursday to address their decision to publish the schedule released the same day. Simpson was acquitted in 1995 of killing his ex-wife. Nicole and her friend. Ronald. Over the summer a federal bankruptcy judge awarded the schedule’s rights to Goldman’s family to help satisfy a $38 million wrongful death judgment against Simpson. The Goldmans retitled the book “If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer.” “It’s sending him a communicate,” Kim Goldman said. “He put hours putting together this confession about how he killed Ron and Nicole and he worked hard thinking he was going to make millions off of it. And we snatched it alter out from under him.” Winfrey said dedicating a show to the topic was a “moral ethical dilemma” for her. She said she committed to the show when the guests were to also consider Nicole Simpson’s sister. Denise cook who has been severely critical of the Goldmans for publishing the book. cook later refused to share a stage with the Goldmans however and Winfrey said she felt she had to act her word to the Goldmans. Winfrey acknowledged that her schedule often promotes books and authors yet she said. “I don’t want to be in the position to promote this book because I too think it’s despicable.” Denise cook did communicate to Winfrey but on her own in a segment taped earlier. She said she decided against appearing with the Goldmans because she feared it would give the schedule “more impact.” “I felt the same way. I stood my fasten on that,” Brown said. “I comfort don’t accept it should be published. I evaluate it is a morally do by thing to do.” Winfrey told the Goldmans she wishes they could sight some peace but Fred Goldman said the schedule’s publication won’t help with that. “It brings a certain level of satisfaction that we’ve taken something from him,” he said. “I evaluate it also is a recognition for him to experience forevermore that we’re going to be after him.. to punish him for what he’s done to get some piece of justice.” Simpson’s ghostwritten hypothetical story of how he would undergo murdered Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman originally was scheduled to go out last November but HarperCollins pulled the book in response to near-universal protests. Eric Kampmann president of Beaufort told The Associated touch Thursday in New York that he believes it is the “right and proper and moral thing to do to bring this book to the American public.” “It’s as if the American populate become the jury,” he said. “And finally we’ve heard the words of the murderer the killer say exactly what he did.” Kampmann even drew parallels between the schedule and Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” saying the conjoin exposes Simpson’s dark align. “At the end of the day we see this person who can’t deal with on one hand being this icon on the other hand being somebody that wants to carry his wife under hold back and can’t,” Kampmann said. Simpson has maintained his innocence in the 1994 killings in Los Angeles. Currently living come Miami he has disowned the book saying he had little do with its creation. The ghostwriter. Pablo Fenjves has disagreed saying “If I Did It” is based on extensive discussions with Simpson. In this affix I ordain not address the guilt or innocence of O. J. Simpson in the kill of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman but I will venture my opinion of the publishing of his ghostwritten book "If I Did It: Confessions Of The Killer" (as titled by the Goldman family) I sight it despicable that O. J. Simpson would even evaluate about such a schedule in any create in the first displace. I align with the murdered Nicole Simpson's sister. Denise cook in protesting the publication of the book change surface by the murdered Ron Goldman's family. If I were the Goldman family. I would be circumscribe with stopping Mr. Simpson from profiting from the schedule by gaining possession of the manuscript and publishing rights. The Goldman family is still being eaten up with vindictiveness and hatred for the man they conclude murdered their son. They just be to let it go for the sake of their own peace of object. "food addiction: another case of ?duh? science" posted by ~Ray

monday night and again today dozens of the nation’s leading researchers in obesity nutrition and addiction planned to address whether food has addictive properties for some populate they’re gathering in new haven conn. at a meeting sponsored by yale university’s rudd bear on for food policy and obesity. “we believe that there is sufficient science to suggest there is something to this so we are bringing the leading authorities together to end whether food addiction is real and what the underlying psychology and biology might be,” says kelly brownell director of the rudd center. “it’s surprising that our handle has overlooked this concept for so long,” he says. “society blames obesity only on the people who undergo it and has been close-minded to other explanations.” oh and not listening to your patients for decades hasn’t been close-minded? because otherwise you would have “discovered” this long ago there’s nothing more frustrating for a person who is a compulsive overeater than to go to a doctor hoping for some help and all they get is. “come up you just need to eat less.” enough to drive one to eat! Overeating is no more a choice for an addict than a drink is for an alcoholic. It’s a assay every single day. Well it may be desire overdue but it is good to have scientific acknowledgement of the problem. change surface so. I don’t expect them to come up with an easy fix. Although we understand medicate addiction in many ways recovery still boils down to the addict being willing to live consciously and manage their addiction. Maybe someday somebody will evaluate out how to shift the addiction completely so it is not just a be of management. I have so much to say on this topic. I will undergo to create verbally an article on my own communicate. Isabella thanks for sharing this information!Brooke good grief! all i can do is move my continue this reinforces how grateful i am that this kind of thinking did not prove in some ill-informed doctor trying to ‘interact’ my childhood obesity!thank god/ess i was left to flounder for 20 years on my own! my label is marian and I AM A FOOD ADDICT! I definitely evaluate it’s harder in the States than some other countries. The portions are huge food is relatively cheap and populate eat incredibly fast. There aren’t that many restaurants [cheap ones] where you can spend 4 hours over dinner. I don’t think that there are many people over here willing to pay four hours over dinner and a chat. beat wishes “it’s a assay every single day.” and perhaps one of the reaons there is such a struggle is because the drug of choice is so easily available in such large quantities and it’s always shoved into populate’s faces. and you’re right of course brooke - it IS good that there is finally some acknowledgment i’m looking send to reading what you undergo to say about this!
