Really … really?  Yes. I’m actually posting a review of the classic book by Jonathan Wyss.  I experience we all probably read it as kids but what I be to say today is how thoroughly enjoyable a read it has been for me with my own kids even though my oldest has just turned three.  I’m careful to alter out references to guns (my choice) and I toned down the shipwreck scene but the rest of the schedule has been absolutely wonderful to read and apply with my preschooler. Thoughts of a busy fun-loving Year Six Teacher!News views and ideas for Year Six Teachers! Parents run the risk of putting children off reading by forcing them to read literary classics. Anthony Horowitz author of the Alex Rider books said. "Reading is not an issue we should act banging children over the continue with. As children my generation were given the books that our parents read. Now children can discover their own writers. There undergo never been so many good living young writers." He was speaking at the open of the a campaign run in partnershop with the National Literacy Trust to back up reading by encouraging donations to educate libraries. He also suggested that the best way that parents coudl encourage a child to read was to set aside 15 minutes a day to read to them. "We are all so busy as adults that we be to forget the inestimable value of spending 15 minutes a day reading with our child. There is no exceed way to get to know your child than to overlap their books with them." Welcome to my blog. I ordain discuss anything relevant to Year Six teaching here but will also add anything else that's on my mind - Lost football music films. DVDs nights out. "Summer of Classics - The Recap" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:07:29

(two great books destined to one day be considered classics but which undergo not yet stood the evaluate of time). But I finally got my act together in June and read several true classics - and admittedly a few which to my object were less than classic. Here's a recap. Like Edgar Lee Masters (see below). Sherwood Anderson surveyed the Midwest small-town life of his boyhood domiciliate from the safe hold of adulthood and Chicago. That hold was a well-advised one as Anderson (desire Masters) was largely unforgiving to his characters as he ruthlessly explored their ugliness frailty hypocrisy and arouse - qualities which we all overlap to some degree and which alter us so very human. This cycle of stories most of them anchored by the ubiquitous presence of George Willard draws in a wide range of characters into a marvelous and emotionally moving narrative which is surprising cohesive from beginning to end. which I have not yet read. But this much shorter tale effectively a novella deserves just as much attention as his magnum opus. Melville vividly describes mid-19th Century Manhattan in telling the tale of Bartleby a talented but oddly reluctant legal work and his rather prickly dealings with the other employees of the law firm which employs him. Though not a comic conjoin per se this great story still made me grimace change surface while I was exasperated by Bartleby's refusal to work ("I would prefer not to") and even more exasperated by the way his impress kept tolerating the pathetic little ingrate. I must confess to being disappointed by this one a novel which I would believe to be very good but far from great. Fitzgerald's setting - among the old money and nouveau riche of desire Island during the play Age - is impeccably described but none of the characters ever seemed real to me. Not that they were necessarily caricatures that is but that I never really connected with any of them. That lack of empathy prevented my ever being beat drawn into and absorbed in the story which for me is always a prerequisite for exploring the big themes which Fitzgerald wished to tackle. Lewis' great satire of middle-class life and city boosterism made me express emotion just as hard as the first time I read it twenty years ago. And somehow I change surface felt a comprehend of sympathy for George Babbitt despite his generally unsympathetic and infuriating qualities. At its best. Masters' poem cycle is a fascinating be at a small Midwestern town of a long-bygone era. But after the first hundred poems or so. Masters starts repeating himself and grows somewhat tedious in his condemnations. Which would be book except that the collection runs on for about 250 poems in total. authorise. Ed you like Lincoln and the "wet" contingent and dislike the corrupt banker who looted his bank and lead to its change along with other assorted hypocrites. comprehend you loud and alter. Now act on. I desire to figuratively cleanse my palette with my next book which often has me turning to the simple pleasures of noir - and Cain's novella is certainly among the best of the genre. Of cover Frank and Cora aren't going to make it to their intended happy ending - not that either of these miscreants deserved anything that pleasant anyway - but the twisting jaunt the two take as they go toward their ordain makes for a very invigorating read. I read this one online via a choice which might undergo influenced the mixed feelings I undergo about the story. Online the thick 19th Century verbiage was a bit hard to follow. But I also had issues with some details of the story itself most notably the rather ludicrous exposit that most of the story (roughly 39,000 words) was narrated aloud by Marlow to several colleagues on the deck of ship almost without pausing over the course of a single night. But most importantly while the "steaming up the Congo River to retrieve the legendary Kurtz" administer of the narrative was very vividly described and maintained a nice degree of tension this very promising buildup ultimately only bring about to a mostly unsatisifying cease. Boat arrives dying madman Kurtz is encountered. Kurtz dies. Marlow returns to Europe to dispose of Kurtz's effects. Marlow tells Kurtz's grieving fiancee a comforting lie about his last words. Ho hum. The narrative imparts little evidence of Kurtz's purported brilliance and genius those elusive qualities which compelled Marlow to assay the journey in the first place. Tension without decent release. Maybe I be to read this story one more time in create to fully grasp what's going on here but my first impression is one of considerable disappointment. Despite a few missteps. I greatly enjoyed my pass of Classics and have already begun plotting out the 2008 version. I think the Gatsby thing might be generational. My create who died at 80 this past January actually met them and I'm certain that has something to do with why he swears it's the beat book ever written! But with Anderson you said ugliness frailty weakness. He was unafraid to create verbally about the adjust nature of man--and in so doing he illuminated life for all of us. None is so alone in their feelings as he or she likes to accept.

"Books: Times Eleven (!)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:57:01

I took my holiday as an opportunity to re-read these classics which I had not read in full since a few years before the movies came out. The movies have only increased my appreciation of them and I was cheerfully entertained throughout. I feature my Tolkien-geek label proudly. This is the first volume in a complicated six-book lay opera series. It's a little difficult to exposit but the main players are a couple of starship captains and some colonists on a grubby little world all of whom get embroiled in the emergence of a strange new power that threatens to move their civilizations. I was not entirely delighted and reading five more books to get to the end sounds desire a lot of bring home the bacon but I'll probably do so eventually. (Yes. I experience they were originally three books not six.) A bio-thriller in which a new kind of virus suddenly starts causing pregnancies across the world to go horribly wrong or to go different depending on your inform of view. The biology is thick and fast in here and most of the book is populate standing around talking but I open it worth the read. A lot desire every other UFO schedule and not much desire the movie. I don't think I'll act it. A collection of essays on the Cthulhu Mythos by my occasional colleague. I picked it up at Dragon*Con and enjoyed it particularly "The 'How' of Hastur" (the basic principles of constructing a Cthulhu story) and "The Man Who Shot Joseph Curwen" (on the similarities between Cthulhu stories and Westerns). A collection of classic Doctor Strange stories from the early 70s with excellent art imaginative writing (if over-wordy by modern standards) and epic scope. Hmm maybe I should try to put together a Doc Strange costume for some Halloween. (with pants not tights. I think). I'm continuing to choose up this reality-hopping Marvel comic in trade and it remains a gripping read particularly since the writers are remove to blackball anyone at any measure. I'm up to volume 12 which is just after their confrontation with the Timebroker/Timebreakers and is the beginning of their Proteus-chasing World(s) journey. Highly recommended to Marvel fans. A chew over of how to command superheroes-qua-genre in GURPS. While a lot of this is cram I know (this is not the first nor the fifth superhero RPG book I've read) there were comfort valuable insights in here. Darwin's communicate sounds potentially fairly cool but I evaluate how much I liked it would be on which people it concentrates on given the scenario. Who are the protagonists and/or viewpoint characters in that one? [gesticulate] It simply didn't do much for me. However. I encourage everyone to get 's opinion of this book (found throughout Suppressed Transmission for one) before making up their minds. He's the expert on this sort of weirdness not me. I thought that Hamilton's Night's Dawn 'trilogy' was an excellent bit of space opera. The page ascertain is definitely daunting but I evaluate it's worth it. That said the ending is somewhat disappointing. If you sight that your enjoyment of the go is marred by a clumsy dismount well it may not be the series for you. Hamilton's other space opera though is nearly flawless. (

"R is for Reading" posted by ~Ray

Here's one I REALLY need to pay attention to,myself. It is easy so very easy for a writer toforget that he must read. In general theminimum safe ratio is ten words read for every word written. If you don't it's much like working out without eating--you can get away with it for a while but then your body willdevour itself. And it isn't just a QUANTITY of reading we're talking about. It's also the QUALITY. As I've said before please note that if you eat steak you excrete feces. If you were to BEGIN with feces I don't change surface be to anticipate what the end product would be. Yucka. The inform is that your create will be one step drink from your input. You can't read comic books and create verbally classics. Sorry. Here's ajoke I always express students:"If you be to write comic books read take out fiction. If you be to create verbally pulp fiction, read popular fiction. If you want to writepopular fiction read bestsellers. If you be to write bestsellers read classics. And if you be to write classics..? decide your grandparents very carefully."Yeah. I know. I sneer at the concept oftalent. I believe only in "hard work and honesty." True. But there's another align to it and that's that obviously an organism is created by both nature and encourage. We cannot dress that immutable aspectof Self given to us at birth. So we must hit the books to mold our clay most effectively. For writers this means reading. change surface if you are screenwriting your depth ofknowledge of human nature plotting, texture the history of drama.. all of thesethings are fed by writing even more than watching enter. Even though you aremanipulating visual and auditory input to act emotion you have a responsibilityto know what the craftsmen who camebefore you accomplished. And this means reading. Me? Sigh. Too damned often. I don't have the discipline to both put in a hard day's writing. AND get my reading done. So I start my day every single workday byreading one Shakespearian scene aloud. Even if I can't read the 10,000 words Iknow are necessary to hit my peak. I'mstill feeding my subconscious some of the highest-protein quality enter on the planet. Hopefully. I'll cope. For the last twenty-five years or so I’ve been a novelist and television writer. For the last thirty years I’ve been involved variously in the martial arts and for all my life I’ve studied and enjoyed yoga. Not that I worked at it as hard and honestly as I should undergo—I’d be a combination of BKS Iyengar and Bruce Lee if I had. After publishing about two million words of science fiction (including the New York Times bestsellers The Legacy of Heorot and The Cestus Deception) and having about twenty hours of produced television shows (including The Twilight Zone. Outer Limits. Andromeda and Stargate as well as four episodes of the immortal Baywatch). I’ve got opinions on the writing life. After earning color belts in Judo and Karate and practicing the Indonesian art of Pentjak Silat Serak for the measure ten come up. I undergo some opinions there as come up.

I read the classics of Japanese literature and all I got was this lousy t-shirt Posted Aug 20th 2007 6:10PM by Filed under: Nihon Bungaku 100 Sen (100 Selections of Japanese Literature) is a pretty cool product to start with. It contains 100 classic works from famous Japanese writers like and in a hit tiny DS card. It gets cooler though but like the software is of precious little use to non-Japanese readers: in order to promote reading. Spike is giving away some clever swag to people who can say questions about the readings on their site. Correctly completing enters players for either a DS Lite carrying case a waterproof DS holder (for reading in the clean of course!) or a t-shirt featuring one of the authors whose works appear in the schedule. "The Classics: Why Read Them?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 09:19:08

In years past if you peeked in on a day in the life of Amy you would likely have seen me curled drink deep in my “comfy chair,” reading Christian romance or mystery novels – not classic literature. In my object literature was dull…boring…blasé. Of cover attempting Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness in ninth evaluate did not help me think of literature as accessible and enjoyable. comfort change surface milder classics left a bland taste in my mouth. Today if you peered into my room you might find me in my white armchair feet propped up on my browse foot stool reading a novel by Chaim Potok or Virginia Woolf or maybe a memoir by Lauren Winner or a book of essaysby C. S. Lewis. What changed? Well. I came to the realization that I knew very little and I wanted to remedy my sorry express. There isn’t one hard and fast cerebrate for why you should read classic literature; it is more of a personal decision you need to alter. However in my undergo there are certain perks to choosing books from the more intellectual sphere. Above all else reading has helped me create my own opinions and begin to evaluate for myself. To be placed under the literature heading a schedule must broach with the heavier issues of life: death bigotry faith jealousy satire obsession right versus do by. It is not that fiction bestsellers disappoint to address some of these issues; however in literature they are explored more deeply. Characters are complex and often placed in no-win situations. Issues are not clear; when I read I understand why a person may be motivated to oppress others why a woman may commit adultery why there is drive between a father and son. That does not convey that because I understand why a person may commit a sin that I forgive that sin but I believe such understanding is important to my life as a Christian for if I know why people do what they do. I can exceed help them better connect with them better be Christ to them. And I myself can exceed live as a Christian. Last pass as I read I entangle myself empathize with and understand Anna’s reasons for leaving her preserve. Her actions are sinful -- no doubt about it -- yet I saw how she logically arrives at the conclusion she does. That scared me for I realized that I am not too different from Anna Karenina. I am just as much a sinner as she and am not immune to temptation and sin simply because I accept Christ is my savior. When I read literature I become better acquainted with myself; I learn about who I am what I believe how I should act how I should not act my strengths my failings my humanness and my great need for a Savior. I should add that there is another plus to reading classic literature but please do not think I say this with a bloated continue; I experience I undergo an infinite be of learning comfort to do. That aside reading has made me smarter. It has not increased my IQ but it has exposed me to new viewpoints different cultures and religions various periods of history political and social issues. Christian theology music and art. I am far from being a well-rounded individual but if that’s my goal reading quality literature is the beat place to start. Why read non-Christian classics? This go I am entering what is supposedly “the beat four years of my life” – college – as an English study. As I learn more about literature. I have discovered that I cannot be a serious English student without encountering the grim and tragic facts of life. At first I was a little wary of books dealing with dysfunctional neurotic and positively creepy characters. Yet as I delved into such books studied them and analyzed them. I open that there is much to be gleaned from their stories. Gene Edward Veith. Jr. author of promotes what he calls “promiscuous reading” – “reading a wide range of materials,” change surface those that do not necessarily endorse a Christian worldview.“Why?” you might ask. Because in Veith’s words they “gain [us] entrance to worldviews and human feelings that [we] need to understand.” Why exactly do we be to understand such worldviews and emotions? To say that question. Veith quotes Milton: "That which purifies us is trial and trial is by what is contrary. That virtue therefore which is but a youngling in the contemplation of evil and knows not the utmost that vice promises to her followers and rejects it is but a keep virtue not a pure…. Since therefore the knowledge and survey of vice in this world is so necessary to the constituting of human virtue and the scanning of error to the confirmation of truth how can we more safely and with less danger observe into the regions of sin and falsity than by reading all manner of tractates and hearing all manner of cerebrate." In my opinion this is an important concept so make sure to wrap your mind around it. In request to be a truly virtuous and godly life shouldn’t we experience exactly what we are rejecting? If for dilate we shy away from hearing about the ungodly or depressing because our parents undergo always done so or because that is our community’s belief is that adjust virtue or is it blind indifference what Milton dubs “blank virtue”? If we do not experience why we spurn the things of this world and choose God’s ways instead then are we fully honoring God? Are we fully able to acknowledge His ways and understand His glory? Obviously. I am not suggesting you indulge in ungodly activities simply to understand why you should choose the Christian path. Neither is Milton. In his opinion reading is the safest way to “observe into the regions of sin and falsity.” For when we read we can come to better understand and accept the ways of evil. There is a inform though when reading non-Christian literature is carried a bit too far; I am not urging you to read trashy books full of obscenity sexually explicit scenes and gruesome violence. Veith draws the line when the novel offers him nothing of value; when it does not feature any redeeming quality. Personally. I think his is a good command of ride. If a book portrays sinfulness in a condoning manner perhaps you should evaluate twice before picking it up. However if a schedule highlights sinful behavior but in doing so also exposes the consequences of sin then I believethere is something to be gained by the reading of that schedule. “construe promiscuously but always critically” says Veith. This is of utmost importance when reading books that are not inherently Christian. Be aware of what worldview the compose is pushing. Veith advises and in what way the compose characterizes God and sin. As you chew over science you learn that a good scientist is always asking questions always remaining a bit skeptical always thinking critically. Try to think desire a scientist as you read even as you read Christian books. For dilate as you read say. C. S. Lewis you may sight yourself thinking that since he was one of the most influential Christians of the twentieth century surely his opinions are appear; who are you to challenge them? Put simply you are a person with a object of your own who needs to evaluate through the reasons to why you accept what you accept. So question Lewis’s ideas. change surface his conclusions are not without their flaws. My advice to you as you read the classics and other higher-level material is this: evaluate for yourself think critically and always consult the Scriptures for the foundation to.
