Four patients in WaikatoHospital’s cardiac care unit were struck down withdiarrhoea and vomiting today (Fri) prompting hospitalofficials to change state the unit’s extension ward.
Fourteenpatients including the four affected remain in the wardunder strict infection hold back measures requiring allvisitors to wash their hands thoroughly before entering andafter leaving the ward. Signage has been posted to back up inkeeping the bug under hold back. The four patients areisolated in cardiac compassionate extension and toilet facilitiesallocated for their sole use.
A week ago hospitalofficials closed ward five * a general medical protect * whenfive patients and six nurses caught the bug.
Then earlierthis week seven patients in cardiac care came down with thebug. The unit remained open.
Waikato govern HealthBoard health services command manager Jan Adams saidconfirmation came through earlier today from the Instituteof Environmental Science and Research Ltd (ESR) that thediarrhoea and vomiting in protect five was norovirus broughtin from the community.

Waikato DHBmedical officer of health Dr Anita Bell is on callthroughout the weekend. Nirovirus symptoms include vomiting,diarrhoea and stomach aches. People may also have a fever,chills headaches and muscle aches. The illness is usuallybrief with symptoms lasting one to two days.
