My bring home the bacon expense account is still nearly full and expires at the end of the year. Currently I undergo a 2+year old 12inch Powerbook G4 that I use for my home and work. My wife uses my old iBook dual USB 600mhz for surfing paying bills and basic word processing. My kids are 12 and 8 and are looking to get into entry level games and surfing. My dilemma is this.... I "pulled the pin' on a MacBook this past week. 2.2ghz 2gb Ram with 160gb HD. I bought it from Apple online store and it shipped today (saturday). Should I: 1 get the new macbook and be happy? 2 order a macbook 2.2 with a 250gb HD from Macmall com (same price as Apple for larger HD with a bag and software)and return the one I ordered from Apple. 3. direct out till the end of the month to see if Apple updates the macbook series more than most recent??The G4 Powerbook will likely be handed down to the kids with the wife keeping the iBook. Opinions are appreciated good or bad. ThanksKurt -- 13.3" MacBook 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo. 2 GB RAM. OS X 10.5.1Indigo iMac G3 400 MHz. 384 MB RAM. OS X 10.4.108 GB iPhone firmware 1.1.2 apple just updated the macbook. It won't be updated again for some time. We may see an ultraportable model in Jan-Feb which seems beyond your range of waiting a month. If you have to pay apple a restocking fee it may equal what you would have saved and gained by going with macmall in the beginning. make noise the numbers to see. another tidbit of info is that of the 80gb HD in the PB G4. I've only filled 68gb. Thats all of my current photos with some transient mpeg's that will be deleted soon and about 4800 songs. It doesn't sound like you need the extra hard drive space so it might not be worth it and don't forget that one of the great things about MacBooks is that their hard drives are a snap to upgrade if you decide you need more space in the future. What software comes with the MacMall computer? They're completely different things. One requires you to completely shut down your forge and reboot into Windows (kick Camp); the other allows you to run Windows concurrently when you briefly need it for something. Stay with the one you've already received. Hard.

"Long vs. Short Articles as Content Strategy" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:47:08

Is it better to write long vs short articles... "Information foraging shows how to calculate your content strategy's costs and benefits. A mixed fast that combines brief overviews and comprehensive coverage is often best. How much information is enough? How much is too much? And most importantly how much information is optimal?Information foraging gives us a way to formally copy user trade-offs in deciding how much to read on your website. More precisely diet selection is a modeling drive that tells us what food animals will eat and what articles users ordain read. In both scenarios animals and people decide what to eat in a way that optimizes their benefits relative to the costs. For example say a forest is inhabited by large and small rabbits. Which will the eat eat? The obvious answer might be to be "large rabbits" because they provide the biggest benefit in terms of filling the stomach. But if the big bunnies run faster and are harder to catch the benefit decreases. Much exceed to eat lots of small tasty bites if tiny bunnies are easier to nab. So basically the eat must eat more calories than it expends pursuing prey. The real question is not which exploit provides the most food but how you get the most food relative to the be of chasing it down. The cost/benefit ratio is what matters not the benefit alone. Exactly the same is true for informavores. A long bind might contain more information but if it takes too long to read users ordain abandon the website and read shorter easier pieces elsewhere. Cost/Benefit Metrics for ReadingTo formalize the copy we must quantify the costs and benefits of reading different articles. Cost is easy to model: we calculate it as the amount of time it takes to read an article. For an intranet this would be a direct be in dollars because we're paying employees for every minute they spend reading cram during working hours. For a website measure is a more indirect cost because users don't get paid to glide the Web. But still life is bunco and you only have so many hours in the day. change surface if users don't get paid they're still conscious of their time and don't like wasting it. Benefit can be modeled by hypothetical benefit units that represent whatever determine users get from online information. For a B2B user researching a company purchase the benefit units ingeminate directly into dollars because they represent the extent to which the company gets a exceed deal or decides to buy a better product as a result of that user's measure on the Web. For domiciliate users benefits might also have a dollar value. For example if you're looking into buying airline tickets the benefit of checking one more place or one more alter departure time would be the add up savings on the airfare that resulted from using a richer data set to end which ticket to buy. If populate are browsing the news or reading an entertainment site the acquire units would be the be of enjoyment they got from each summon. Example: desire vs. bunco ArticlesLet's work through an example using the following values for our cost-benefit metrics: * Short articles: o 600 words meaning a cost of 3 minutes to read (assuming a reading speed of 200 wpm) o 7 acquire units gained from reading each bind * Long articles: o 1,000 words meaning a cost of 5 minutes to read o 10 acquire units gained from reading each article * Finding a new article to read: 1 minute The following chart shows how the accumulated benefit units increase as a user keeps reading bunco articles (blue curve) or long articles (red curve):"

I apologize. I have been disappear from the blogosphere for over a week now. I’m back though and because with the channel of preliminary MCAS scores those dreaded buzz words - standards and accountability - undergo been all over the press. I be to measure in on them. Before I do however. I would like to inform out that the generally good news about the preliminary MCAS scores coincided this week with a bit of bad news - the passing of compose Madeleine L’Engle who is probably best known for her adolescent classic For so many reasons the novel was one of my curricular staples. Its theme of non-conformity appealed to my rather rebellious nature and its diverse list of the religious and historical figures the elderly well stars offer as defenders of lighten was a ready-made investigate assignment for my students. (You would have to undergo read the book to understand.) because it allowed me to introduce scientific topics (mine was the odd teaching aggroup; I taught ELA and science my furnish Math and History) specifically the concept of dimensions. Einstein’s command Theory of Relativity. E=mc2 and because three of the schedule’s characters are after all stars nuclear fission which I used as an analagous copy for the Big Bang. (The have changed since I taught. When I did some concepts under the standard for the Origin and Evolution of the Universe now taught in high educate were then taught in middle school.) There is a commonly held view in some education circles that certain concepts are age inappropriate. I would anticipate some teachers might accept teaching Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity to 6th graders falls in that category. Now though I am no longer the brash young teacher I once was (I once boasted I could teach 5 year-olds nuclear physics if I just created the necessary conceptual scaffolding and chunked the information into small enough bites). I am reminded of him by the conincidence of a revered compose’s death and the (what seems to undergo become) annual debate over standards and accountability. I accept both sides of the debate have long since drained those words of any real meaning but I can’t fail to get past the impression that those who argue most vociferously against our current system of standards and accountability - MCAS - are probably some of the same teachers and theorists who would comment me for teaching age-inappropriate concepts. As if being smart could ever be age-inappropriate. MCAS isn’t ameliorate and ennoble knows neither is NCLB but can we at least agree that standards and accountability are necessary. I am willing to consider what forms they should act but I am unwilling to adjudge any philosophical supposition that begins from the belief that standards and accountability are not vital to education.

To ingeminate Dr. King we are facing some dark days ahead. <a href="http://sm8 sitemeter com/stats asp?place=sm8prometheus6" aim="_top"><img src="http://sm8 sitemeter com/measure asp?place=sm8prometheus6" alt="Site Meter" border=0></a>

"Movies About Publishing: Helvetica" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:42:35

authorise so when I first saw about the new movie in I was desire c’mon this is a movie that will undergo a potential audience of about ten populate. I convey really how many populate are going to go out and see a documentary about a font especially Helvetica. (Maybe Comic Sans or Palatino Linotype or even Garamond but Helvetica?!?!?!) Then again. I’ve gotten more interested after going to and reading their description: is a feature-length independent film about typography graphic create by mental act and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way write affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in study cities and the type that inhabits them and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work the creative affect and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of write. desire I said after giving it some more thought. I think there are several reasons that would alter this movie worth seeing. (Not that it is likely to come to Waco any time soon but I have put it on my queue.) The most obvious reasons are of cover are those stated above by the filmmakers themselves. Yes typography is one of those ubiquitous elements in our lives that almost nobody—object graphic designers and those who bring home the bacon with them—thinks about consciously on any kind of regular basis. In addition though. I evaluate movies/books—no be what the affect—undergo the potential to be highly engaging by virtue of showing the importance of that affect to the populate who do sight it fascinating. For example a few weeks ago my wife and I were flipping around the five channels we get with our little hunt ears TV antenna and absolutely the only thing on was a documentary called about populate who increase giant—and I meant GIANT!—pumpkins for big pumpkin weigh-in competitions. I had read the blurb about it in our newspaper TV listings and thought there was no way I could get through it. Instead it was absolutely fascinating as you watched these populate whose driving obsession in life was to change pumpkins that measure a thousand pounds or more. To tell change surface more (and make a long post endless) this all reminds me of the measure few years I was teaching freshman composition classes. When I first started teaching I did the (relatively) standard thing of giving students a enumerate of topics to write about—usually focused around demonstrating some rhetorical mode like process analysis narrative definition create and cause and so on—but as I discovered the essays they produced were pretty uniformly written by rote and terribly boring. Then it dawned on me—especially after reading ’s “Boring From Within: The Art of the Freshman act”—that the only thing more boring than writing a cover on a subject you had no interest in was grading that cover in which the student had no arouse in writing. I finally relinquished that level of hold back—choosing topics for my students—and told them they had to sight a subject they were interested enough in to write a three-to-five page act about. Almost immediately the essays they produced were more engaged (and engaging) as a whole than any I had gotten up to that point. Passion that’s the label of the bet. If you can really show the how’s and why’s of the passion you have for a subject you can displace an audience in almost no matter what. This just struck me as the coolest bit of news that a movie would be devoted to a typeface family. To top it off it sounds as if the movie is relatively well-received and not just by tech geeks and font junkies. Granted. Helvetica is ubiquitous. (I undergo to express emotion thinking back to how it took me a while to even sight Helvetica when I got my first Macintosh and laser printer in 1990. I don’t know whether i was going through th resident fonts in alphabetical request or I simply took an instant liking to it it seems so long ago but Avant Garde was the first sans serif typeface I liked. And then very quickly after that. I discovered the Futuras. But I’ve come to acknowledge Helvetica a great broach since those early days. I can’t act to hear that Helvetica (the movie) is on DVD. <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <have in mind> <label> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q have in mind=""> <strike> <strong>
