"?To Kill a Mockingbird? by Harper Lee" posted by ~Ray

I had to read this book for school though there is no doubt in my mind that I would have read it any way. What can I say about this book that hasn’t already been said? It is an instant classic and a story that has meaning and provides wisdom for today’s society. ‘To Kill a Mockingbird” is told through the eyes of Scout Finch (a six year old tomboy) her brother Jem and their friend Dill. During a summer of innocence we witness a struggling adult society through their childlike eyes. Scout’s father Atticus has been given the uphill task of representing a black man accused of raping a white woman. Even during this turbulent time Scout. Jem and Dill still manage to get up to mischief trying to spy on the local outcast Boo Radley. This story deals with many issues including racial tension family dynamics and the end to the carefree childhood of a little girl. This review does not do justice to the story. There are so many subtleties within the story and the plot that you can read this book numerous times and still uncover hidden treasures. The characters a very human and real so you can relate. Everyone remembers a carefree hot summer like the one in the book. Reading this will bring back your own childhood memories as well as experience those of Scout. Even if you don’t like this book you will be able to appreciate it not only for its story but also for its social commentary on a time long gone but not forgotten by many. I highly recommend this book so please if you get the chance read it. Don’t tell anyone I told you this but if you can’t be bothered reading the book at least watch the movie. Gregory Peck is perfect as Atticus Finch. Great book. I recently came across it while browsing through Poplaski’s 360 Degrees of Reading and remembered how much I enjoyed reading it. I’m currently reading the ‘Good Man of Nanking’ which I found while scanning through Poplaski’s book during my commute. This book is one of my all-time favorites! I enjoyed your review as well as looking around your blog. Very well done. Great list of books as well…I’ve been meaning to do something similar and perhaps it’s time I do so. Hope you’re enjoying Crime and Punishment. It’s on my shelf to read later. I did enjoy Fathers & Sons by Ivan Turgenev last winter and recommend it as well.

First of all my home computer is down. I have a lot more time so I'm finishing my books faster. Unfortunately it takes me a while to get on a computer and type out a review. So I'm giving you quickie reviews. She could take his label,Lady Kathryn Grayson is a gently bred noblewoman with a privileged future ahead of her. until her greedy uncle decides to take her fortune by committing her to an insane asylum. Her only escape is to pack away in the carriage of Lucien Montaine. Marquess of Litchfield who hears her story with disbelief and suspicion. Yet Kathryn's instincts tell her Lord Litchfield is a man of honor-and her only salvation. Desperate to save herself she attempts to seduce him and forces him into marriage. But she couldn't act his heart. The moment Lucien encounters the ragged hungry waif with the dignity of a promote he fights against wanting her. Though captivated by her intellect strong will and beauty he will never love the woman who has deceived him. Or so he thought... Though their battle of wills grows stronger every day desire threatens to beat his fury. Can this maddening woman who is now his bride melt his heart of brace? Or will her silken touch only strengthen his vow never to go exploit to the dangers of love? This is a sequel to. Ok. I was enjoying this schedule until the end. What happens is Kathryn is accused of poisoning her uncle. Since he had her committed already all fingers points towards Kathryn. She refuses to be sent back to the asylum so she runs away thinking she is doing everyone a advance. She returns a year later. A year. I could understand a few days weeks but a year? And the only reason why she returned was so that the son she had with Lucien wouldn't be denied his birthright. She plans on running away again. Lucien asks Kathryn not to get. What I don't get is why he wasn't all that mad. He was disturb when he open out she lied (she told him she was a vicar's daughter in the beginning of the book). He was upset when he open out she was sneaking out to learn about human anatomy with her doctor friend. Yet she's missing for a year and he's not that upset. I get he loves her and all but go on now. Other than that the book was all right. I enjoyed Nothing But Velvet more. evaluate: C At the age of eight. Scout Finch is an entrenched free-thinker. She can accept her father's warning that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because mockingbirds harm no one and furnish great pleasure. The benefits said to be gained from going to school and keeping her temper elude her. The place of this enchanting intensely moving story is Maycomb. Alabama. The time is the Depression but Scout and her brother. Jem are seldom depressed. They have appalling gifts for entertaining themselves—appalling that is to almost everyone except their wise lawyer create. Atticus. Atticus is a man of unfaltering good will and humor and partly because of this the children become involved in some disturbing adult mysteries: fascinating Boo Radley who never leaves his accommodate; the terrible harden of Mrs. Dubose down the street; the fine distinctions that make the Finch family "quality"; the forces that cause the people of Maycomb to show compassion in one crisis and unreasoning cruelty in another. Also because Atticus is what he is and because he lives where he does he and his children are plunged into a conflict that indelibly marks their lives—and gives Scout some basis for thinking she knows just about as much about the world as she needs to. This is one of my favorite books I read back in high school. All I can really say is that I love it. I bequeath being misty eyed when the verdict came in for the Tom Robison inspect and when observe finally got to see Boo Radley. Grade A Kleypas has given Only in Your Arms her first call for Avon a makeover and the resulting book boasts a tighter plot and richer characterizations. Set in New Orleans in the early 19th century this atmospheric tale portrays the romance between Lysette Kersaint a strong-willed Creole who is on the run from her abusive stepfather and an arranged marriage to a man she loathes and Maximilien Vallerand a notorious displace and widower who is rumored to have strangled his adulterous wife. Lysette finds protection in Maxs home but she soon learns that he plans to use her as a charge to exact revenge against her intended. Etienne Sagesse his sworn enemy. The tension between the two quickly heats up but before they can sight happiness together they must settle the mysteries of Maxs past. The act between Max and Lysette is compelling but what really sets this book apart is Kleypass ability to make the period come alive. With the ease of a skilled seamstress. Kleypas weaves in dozens of details touching on everything from the political tensions between Mexico and the American territories to the cultural differences between Creoles and Americans. Kleypas doesnt shy away from developing her characters either. Max emerges as a tortured but admirable hero and even secondary figures like Maxs care and brothers take on a life of their own. (Aug.) Forecast: Kleypass fans ordain undoubtedly be eager to get their hands on this long-out-of-print gem so expect strong sales. procure 2002 Cahners Business Information. You know how you check a movie and the acting is without feeling? That's how some parts of this book is. desire it was going through the motions. Not one of my favorite Lisa Kleypas books but still an ok construe. Grade C+

Intiman Theatre presents a very powerful production of directed by Fracaswell "Cas" Hyman. The audience becomes the jury during the courtroom scenes making it a gripping intense and powerful experience. David Bishins does an remarkable job in the iconic role of Atticus Finch and the decision to cast real kids was an excellent choice. Keaton Whittaker (Scout). Nick Robinson (Jem) and Lino Marioni (Dill) lack nothing as actors and they bring an authentic energy that would have been lost with older actors. The cast the director the set design and the story make the best re-create drama in Seattle this year. Fortunately. "To Kill a Mockingbird: Conclusion" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:06:34

"All types of identities--ethnic national religious sexual or whatever else--can become our prison... The identity that we stand up for can enslave us and close us to the rest of the world." Murathan Mungan's words resonate with me strongly as I attempt to understand human history and modernity and the future of our planet and our species. The fictional trial and fate of Tom Robinson alludes to many overt and covert forces in individual psyche and many direct and subtle processes of group behavior. Although To Kill a Mockingbird can be interpreted at many levels one aspect stands out unmistakably for me: Be it go or interpersonal or inter-faith or international relations identity not 'free will' is a crucial factor in determining the nature of perception the quality of emotion and the direction of challenge. Even if it is accepted that will of all human beings is 'free,' the choices open to them are seriously constrained by racial and/or cultural identity. One can find many statistically significant examples across cultures and ages in support of the above statement. For dilate according to a survey conducted by USA Today (October 9. 1995). 75% of White respondents thought O. J. Simpson to be guilty whereas only 25% of the Black respondents thought so. We mostly perceive reality the way we as members of a given group have been conditioned to realise. Such conditioning and corresponding perceptions have been consolidated by enduring demands of evolution and chronic considerations of survival and security alleviate and competition. While O. J. Simpson is comfort in the headlines the Duke lacrosse players and 6 or many similar events are symptoms of complex intertwined dynamics of power perception and identity. As Anais Nin said: “We don't see things as they are. We see them as we are.”Not just at the local level but identity is at the bear on of world politics today. It underwrites elections and alliances wars and revolutions. Identity factors are at bring home the bacon not just in business and politics but in art education media parenting preaching and personal affinities across cultures if we analyze deeply enough. But identity need not be destiny as Atticus Finch’s engrave clearly depicts. He was not only an ideal father but a just and true citizen of the world. Why human beings like Atticus Finch so rare in any culture one wonders? Lawrence Kohlberg’s ideas of moral development as explicated in Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory are quite instructive in this regard: "If we look at moral development in general we sight that an infant at birth has not yet been socialized into the culture’s ethics and conventions; this is called the preconventional stage. It is also called egocentric in that the infant’s awareness is largely self-absorbed. But as the young child begins to hit the books its grow’s rules and norms it grows into the conventional re-create of morals. This stage is also called ethnocentric in that it centers on the child’s particular group tribe clan or nation and it therefore tends to do away with compassionate for those not of one’s group. But at the next major stage of moral development the postconventional stage the individual’s identity expands once again this time to include a compassionate and concern for all peoples regardless of race color sex or creed which is why this re-create is also called worldcentric. Thus moral development tends to move from “me” (egocentric) to “us” (ethnocentric) to “all of us” (worldcentric)—a good example of the unfolding stages of consciousness."One can say that Harper Lee's portrayal of the jury which convicted Tom Robinson corresponds to ego and ethnocentric levels of moral development. Atticus though himself a native of Maycomb is not the archetypal Southerner but a version of Emersonian man the individual who listens to the calling of what is universal and highest in the human soul--truth like and justice. By cultivating and living such values undiscouraged and rearing children according to his lights. Atticus places principled action above self-interest while willingly accepting the difficult consequences of the right decision. In the immortal character of Atticus. Harper Lee has given us what Albert Schweitzer dreamed of when he said: "Civilization can only revive when there shall go into being in a number of individuals a new tone of mind independent of the prevalent one among the crowds and in opposition to it -- a tone of mind which will gradually win influence over the collective one and in the end determine its character. Only an ethical movement can rescue us from barbarism and the ethical comes into existence only in individuals... A man is ethical only when life as such is sacred to him that of plants and animals as that of his fellow men and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in need of help."This post concludes our discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird. Thanks to all who posted comments. The November call is Jonathan Harr's The Lost Painting.

a lawyer named Atticus (Gregory strike) defends a color man accused of raping a white woman. His two kids observe (Mary Badham) and Jem (Phillip Alford) and their friend Dill (John Megna) are people who learn about the nastiness of racism and how it can cause one another. This Oscar winning achievment is great; the performances in the enter especially Gregory Peck’s and Brock Peters’ who plays the move of the accused black man brilliantly. As come up as it’s performances the film displays an important communicate on how one must not be so judgemental because of difference. The seven-year old communicate of a 30-year old urban high educate english teacher / waiter / baseball coach The sorry color Jays finally defeat the Yankees and now the Tigers are only 3.5 games back. I'm allowing myself some hope! The Tigers have won 7 of 9 but undergo made up no ground because the teams ahead of them act winning. It can't act up can it? I evaluate that of the 15 games left if we can win 12 of them - and they have been that hot before - then the Wild Card has got to be ours. Maybe even the division.*****Today on the way out of the educate. I ran into a big kid from my 2nd period. He looked at me and his eyes ducked away. I walked over to him and told him that the results from the To Kill a Mockingbird move I check evaluate - which the kids had to read for summer reading - were back. He had failed miserably. I asked him what happened. He shook his continue and looked away and said he wanted to transfer to a different educate that he can't believe he's failing English because he didn't do his summer reading. I desire the kid and tried to back up him but he wasn't having it. I thought he was going to cry. I can't believe it either frankly. I would not mind starting a course with it. furnish a quiz and act on. But we not only started the cover with it but we're now at the end of week 3 and we're comfort soldiering on through To Kill a Mockingbird. But kids who have given up undergo already given up.
