"Can Your Computer Keep a Secret?" posted by ~Ray

Nearly all computers undergo at least some sensitive data stored on their hard disk and many have made securing this data a top priority. To back up organizations in their seek to understand and sight appropriate solutions for safeguarding data at rest we undergo written a series of articles on this important subject. The first of these articles called “Hard Drive Passwords Easily Defeated –the truth about data protection,” focused on the strengths and weaknesses of computer access control. That initial bind addressed the fasten on the lie door so to communicate including the BIOS the operating system and hard plough access control systems which require users to authenticate themselves before gaining access to the system or hard plough. In the second installment of this series we will be focusing on the next layer of protection – the actual encryption of the data on the disk drive(s). To be more precise this article covers software based encryption. Our next article part III will cover hardware based encryption solutions. Importance of encryptionWhile access control mechanisms like the authentication screens presented by the operating system. BIOS or hard disk access control systems do offer basic protection in most cases they are relatively easy to defeat. For example all one needs to do is shift a plough control and attach it in a system where the ID and password is known in request to defeat BIOS or operating system protection and gain access to data on the hard plough. Encryption on the other transfer if implemented correctly provides a great broach of protection. Since the actual data is encrypted an attacker gains nothing by mounting a plough drive in another system because he ordain comfort be unable to read any of the actual data. So even if other access controls disappoint or are broken the data on the hard disk remains protected. Another compelling cerebrate to encrypt data is to protect it when the storage device where it resides is no longer of use. When PCs and servers are eventually disposed of or repurposed for apply data that has been encrypted is protected and the expense of overwriting the data or physically destroying the device can be mitigated. Finally and perhaps most important for many organizations there are numerous laws and regulations that demand sensitive data to be encrypted. The consequences of being out of compliance can be life threatening to an organization. The damage done by the theft of just one laptop or disk with sensitive data can easily be millions of dollars. Overview of software based encryption solutionsSoftware encryption the focus of this article falls into two basic categories device-oriented systems and file-oriented systems. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. Device oriented systems are tied to a specific device like a plough control or a USB drive. The encryption affect is typically within the device driver. Once the user has proven their identity any and all data written to the device is automatically and transparently encrypted and any data read from the device is automatically and transparently decrypted. Unless the user can give a change by reversal ID and password the decryption ordain not function and the data remains encrypted and unintelligible. However because the encryption is dependent on the device itself data copied off of the device and stored on some other medium or system is not protected unless the aim device or some other affect re-encrypts the data. Device oriented full plough encryption (FDE) products undergo been available in software since the early 90s. Recently other types of device-oriented encryption products undergo begun to emerge. They are similar to hard disk encryption systems but these new generation of device encryption products encrypt data on USB drives. CDs. DVDs and other medium. File-oriented encryption systems on the other transfer operate at the application forge. One or more applications encrypt individual files within the applications themselves. When the register is saved on the hard disk or any other medium it has already been encrypted. Because the encryption occurs in the application it is not dependant on a device and therefore remains protected wherever it goes. A file encrypted in this manner can be stored anywhere or sent across a network and remain secure. File-oriented encryption systems act many forms. They can be manually invoked utilities that encrypt specifically selected files or they can be tightly integrated within other applications. For example they may kill as plug-ins within Microsoft® Office and can be configured to automatically encrypt any files that include specific words like “confidential” or have data that looks desire ascribe separate numbers social security numbers etc. As another option they can encrypt any file being saved in a specific folder which has been specifically designated for obtain files. Because of this latter feature register oriented encryption systems are sometimes referred to as encrypted file and folder systems. "Digitization, Reading, Writing, Publishing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:19:19

It seems a lucky thing that I returned to graduate educate in the fall of 1995.  A year or two earlier the librarian at the secondary school where I was teaching did a demonstration of a new technology called “telecommunicate.”  It seemed an interesting tool even though I couldn’t evaluate of an immediate use for it.  I didn’t have anyone to email.  I was still getting up on Saturday mornings and typing letters to friends.  Yes. I did say typing.  I was not opposed to using computers.  I used the educate computers for quizzes handouts and the speech I made to graduating seniors the final year of my high-school teaching career.  In fact. I wanted to own a computer but I didn’t be to go away using one for my longer-term writing projects until I could undergo a computer at home.  I knew from experience that once I advanced in word-processing technology. I became dependent on the newer tool a dependence I very much welcomed–the more advanced technology allows greater flexibility with and hold back over the printed page; with computers we can not only manipulate the summon in ways we could not change surface dream of with our best electronic typewriters we can even preview what the page ordain be desire once it’s printed out.  Luckily the University of Iowa–where I went to become a student again–had a program that allowed students to acquire computers with affordable monthly payments.  I was just in time for the digital revolution. During my first weeks approve in school one of the professors stood before the new graduate students and announced that because of the burgeoning computer technologies, within five years we would no longer be using printed books.  It was a curious statement because not only did I experience it was not true. I was quite sure that neither the person making the statement nor anyone else in the dwell believed it either.  Nevertheless the pronouncement called attention to what everyone surely felt that something in our noetic economy–our way of organizing storing and retrieving knowledge along with our way of conceiving of what knowledge is–was deeply changing.  As Anthony Grafton puts it in his recent (Nov. 5. 2007) bind. “Future Reading” (which Tyler Meier refers to in his recent blog) ”The computer and the Internet have transformed reading more dramatically than any technology since the printing press….”  Not only do we undergo greater flexibility with and control over the pages that we produce we apply unprecedented flexibility with and access to texts–through Early English Books Online the Google Library communicate. JSTOR etc.–that we read.  We find ourselves at an especially complex and bracing moment of noetic history. Grafton–whose article magisterially leads us on a quick journey through the history of writing print and digitization–characterizes some of the complexity of our show moment this way: “But these streams of data rich as they are will illuminate rather than eliminate books and prints and manuscripts that only the library can put in front of you.”  I am reminded of what I undergo heard referred to as Ong’s law–after the great historian of cosciousness Walter Ong –that advanced language technologies do not destroy but rather reinforce while they also transform the older technologies.  Thus for example, as create technology advanced it became more urgent to acquire the skills of literacy the technology of writing.  As we moved into  a period of communicate technology it became more important for literate persons to be able to create a printed page that is to use a typewriter. So even though we are well into a great digitial revolution–one that many of us welcome–it does not at all appear that books are disappearing.  In fact everywhere I go libraries and bookstores be to be acquiring more and more printed material.  And yet this printed material is changing.  One small example has to do with print-on-demand technology which allows such an enterprise as flavor Publishing (which publishes contemporary poetry and criticism) to operate on a rather large scale with a small staff and relatively low overhead.  This technology is also altering if not eliminating the concept of the print run.  Because the press uses a function that prints books only when they are ordered there are no print runs in the older sense and presumably a book ordain never go out of print unless the print-on-demand service folds or the publisher decides to cease the book.  Given this technological regime a book could stay in print for hundreds if not thousands of years and older books could be brought back into create–a function that flavor Publishing carries out also–for the same millennia. It’s difficult to say what other ways digital technology will act to alter schedule technology.  Frankly. I look forward to the day when I can purchase and read more books in electronic form.  Because of my allergies. I am unable to read for desire stretches many of the printed books that I undergo owned for decades.  And as much as I like my personal ilbrary of three or four thousand printed titles all of these books create a great broach of fill in my work lay.  My preferred interior decorating style is what I would style early American monastic but the sheer volume of books that I keep around along with my own ineptitude with spatial organization prevent me from achieving the kind of sparseness that I desire.  For the time being though the codex form provides its own flexibility and convenience–for transporting marking setting alongside other texts–that I simply do not undergo otherwise.  It seems to me telling that even though I started reading Grafton’s article online when I realized that it was several pages long. I walked into the next room to choose up the print version of to end the bind (of cover the very fact that I evaluate of an online article as made up of “pages” registers the extent to which I am still a person of create).  I sight it difficult to imagine that create will disappear just as I find it difficult to create by mental act life without computers and the Internet–change surface though I was living what I thought was fine without the latter a little over a decade ago.  I suspect that I undergo changed and been altered by the emerging noetic economy in ways that I do not yet cognise.  I suspect that most all of us are changing with these emerging forces.  It’s exciting and at times a little precarious to think where this revolution might be taking us. […] My preferred interior decorating style is what I would style early American monastic but the sheer volume of books that I keep around along with my own ineptitude with spatial organization prevent me from achieving the kind of sparseness that I like. I’m not sure I would quite alter “early English monastic” here (too chilly not to mention the lice) but I can certainly empathize with this. [Jerry Harp at the KRBlog] […]

"Rebit: Worth Waiting for, After All" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:46:35

Dennis and I exchanged several e-mails and looked at the Rebit log files to try to figure out why the backup should take so long particularly since I left it running overnight. Rebit is designed to delay whenever you use your mouse or keyboard in order not to hinder with your ability to use your computer. Overall that's a good thing: file synchronization and continuous backup programs can slow down the answer of a forge and get annoying. It does mean however that if you close your Rebit in for the first measure at the beginning of a work day it may not get very far toward protecting you until you leave the office at night--and then only if you get your machine on. So at this point—which would have been Tuesday—what I was prepared to write was that it's only users familiar with other backup programs who are likely change surface to sight that Rebit takes a long measure to make its first copy of your drive. It isn't people desire me who already undergo 5 automated backup systems in place that Rebit is designed for. Rebit is meant for people who have no backup system and don't know or be to experience very much about their computers. The people who when told "Just plug it in," ordain close it in move "Accept" at the cause and then ignore it until they need to recover a lost register.

"Explanation of the Two Major Formats Blu-ray Disc or Advanced ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:14:58

Blu-ray popularly known as BD or blue-ray discs is a next-generation optical disc that has been developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The group consists of leading consumer electronics giants. PC and media manufacturers like Philips. Samsung. Sony. Sharp. HP. Hitachi and Panasonic to name a few. The change enables recording rewriting and playback of high definition (HD). One major favor that the technology has over conventional DVDs is that it allows for more storage capacity. It can hold up to 25GB on a hit layered disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. The technology also incorporates advanced video and audio codes for the ultimate high definition viewing experience. The name Blu-ray is used because the format uses a blue-violet instead of a red laser as in the case of traditional DVDs. Another study advantage with Blu-ray change lies in the fact that the entire technology is backwards compatible. You can now compete your old CDs and DVDs through a BD/DVD/CD compatible unit. The blue-violet laser has a shorter wavelength than a red laser which enables it to focus on a disc with greater precision. The data is also packed on the surface of a disc more tightly. This explains the disc’s capability to store more data change surface though it is of the same size as a traditional CD. The technology is supported by some of the ’s leading manufacturers. In fact many major movie studios have already announced titles with Blu-ray in them. Warner. Disney. Sony. MGM and Paramount are among the leading studios who have embraced the format. Some of the famous titles include movies such as Desperado. Fantastic Four. Hero. Kill account and Lethal Weapon. Sony has in fact come out with a mass produced model which has already hit the. Several other leading brands have also announced their intentions to open models with the Blu-ray change. The Blu-ray movie codes are different from that of DVD region codes. So you undergo North America. South America. lacquer and East Asia excluding China forming the Region 1 followed by Europe and Africa forming the Region 2. China. India and Russia alter up Region 3. One major disadvantage with Blu-ray format is that many standard DVD players are unable to read the discs. This problem is being rectified in the create of backward compatible players though. The growth of Blu-ray discs is expected to drive the growth of the home theater segments to further unprecedented heights. Yet another technology or change to be precise which is giving the Blu-ray format a run for its money is the Advanced Optical Disc (AOD) format. It has been created by Toshiba in collaboration with NEC. Even though it is considered the main compete to the Blu-ray change ironically it is being supported by the DVD forum that includes nine members who are ‘Blu-ray disc founders.’ While a single layered disc using this technology holds around 15 GB of data a double layered disc would direct 30 GB of data. One can force 20 GB of data in the recordable version. This change too uses the blue laser the difference being the higher compression of the video be adrift. One major advantage of the AOD format over the Blu-ray change is the fact that the AOD format will you less. Although not a great broach is known about the format as yet if one were to go by the Toshiba-NEC team then the players would be smaller than the ones using Blu-ray format. Capable of playing high definition DVD some models using the AOD format from Toshiba have already hit the markets. They are roughly priced around $500-$800. Details available on the progression of the technology are sketchy however during this inform in. Industry analysts believe that the Blu-ray format would hold sway over the masses in the come future. There are other related technologies which are also trying to break in like the Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) technology. This technology is still at a research stage and claims to have greatly increased storage capacity than both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Researchers are also working on many other technologies. Some of them are claiming to be working on a technology with a storage capacity that is believe it or not. 100 that of a DVD. The technology involves making disks with a three-dimensional coordinate rather than the traditional two dimensional DVDs. With data storage and protection assuming importance research on various lines is being carried out. Most of these investigate activities have the potential to revolutionize the home theater market. With convergence of various features being the trend nowadays there are several models of DVD players already available in the market which undergo gaming options apart from playing DVDs. The increasing popularity of domiciliate theater systems is driving the research in this handle. Movie makers too are increasingly dependent on formats for both film making and projection. Digital video and audio outputs are considered far more superior to the existing traditional methods and offer viewers an enhanced movie undergo. Where to get REGION remove DVD players/recorders. Today (8 September) is which sees as ”a open of dress and an instrument for achieving advance social develop.”I was taught to read by my parents and grandparents desire before going to educate and like the way that fictional and factual literature in all forms opens up the past present and future world to me. When I travel to countries such as Bulgaria where a different alphabet is used. I get a small sense of what it must be desire to be unable to read or create verbally.  I am lost in the  - and unable to understand or communicate. There is also that University students are “grammatically challenged” whilst journalists regularly criticise the linguistic abilities of PR practitioners. I was surprised to read how had read most of the books on the shortlist of the.  Other than ’s novella. - which has sold over 100,000 copies in hardback the others undergo together sold only a few thousand copies so far in the UK. Even many of the “” are failing to change in any number.  Although the was worth £3,309 million in 2006 - 73% of which was in the consumer sector.  The data (from the ) shows spending in schools on books was 8% of the market with academic/professional accounting for 19%. Of cover literacy isn’t just about buying or reading books.  It is about being able to read newspapers magazines packaging road signs, enjoin send pieces tip statements and personal communications.   If you cannot or do not, read - the online world ordain largely be closed to you.  Then there are the pleasures of life such as reading a bedtime story to a small child to go away them on the road to literacy.  Exploring secondhand bookshops and libraries where works can be borrowed meaning reading doesn’t have to be an expensive pastime.  In my village we have few public services - but the mobile library visits every other week. Literacy encompasses an ability to create verbally - to express your views or simply provide information.  In countries such as the UK we are fortunate that children are able to go to educate where they should at the very least be able to hit the books to read and write.  It is a disgrace that so many do not get these basic skills for life. But as UNESCO revealed it is those who are much less fortunate who have the most to gain from improved literacy.  I never go a day without reading - professionally and personally.  There are books magazines and work-related reading (yes even the dreaded marking), everywhere in my house.  I never jaunt anywhere without a schedule in my bag - and there are novels beside the bed and in the bathroom. Reading gives me pleasure challenges my views connects me with other people times and places.  I would not be without the ability to read or create verbally. "Explanation of Region Free DVD Players that Can and Cannot Play CD ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:00:25

There are two types of CDs the CD-R and the CD-RW. CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the digital audio disc and was invented by Philips and Sony in 1988. The CD-Rs were first produced by the companies Taiyo Yuden. Kodak. Maxell and TDK. They are capable of storing music or data. The CD-R is burned using laser. The standard CD-R is a polycarbonate disc of 120mm or 80 mm diameter and a 1.2 mm thickness. These standard CD-Rs have a storage capacity of 74 minutes of audio or 650 MB (Mega Byte) of data. The non-standard CD-Rs can store 702 MB data and 79 minutes and 59 seconds of audio. The writable ascend of the CD-R has a turn groove which guides the laser beam for writing and reading information. The spiral groove align is coated with a thin layer of organic dye followed by a thin layer of silver a silver alloy or gold. Then a final protective layer of lacquer which is photo-polymerizable is coated as a change state layer and is cured using UV light in the end. This is how a blank disc is prepared. The data is inscribed on the turn groove. For writing data on a CD-R the laser physically burns the organic dye by heating to a certain aim. This area on the disc that has been written upon turns opaque to the laser and reflects less light than the other areas. When a CD-R is written upon its organic dye undergoes an irreversible decomposition. Hence once a CD-R is written upon it is permanent and cannot be erased or re-used. There are three methods used for writing on a CD-R using a CD recorder. In the Disc At Once?technique the CD is written completely in one go and thereafter Closed,?such that no more data can be added to it subsequently. This type of recording is commonly utilized in be?audio recordings. This CD-R becomes a read-only CD. The CD-R and CD-RW can be played back conveniently on the CD players. There are a be of DVD players that can play only DVD discs and are incapable of reading the CDs. This is due to certain technological disparities between the two formats. The CD-R. CD-RW and DVDs are read using different laser specifications. The CD-R is read using infrared 780nm laser while the DVD is read by a visible red 635nm or 650nm laser. The CD-RW can be read by the 650nm laser since its recording forge is not very dependant on the laser wavelength for being read. Also the optical device used for reading DVDs has a numerical aperture of 0.60 as opposed to 0.45 used for CD-R. So certain DVD players cannot read CD-R discs and be to be fitted with a dual laser to be able to read CD-Rs also. Most DVD players are capable of reading CD-RW but in some cases the optical system of the DVD is not sensitive enough to read the communicate dress and lower reflectivity of a CD-RW. The consumers usually demand DVD systems that are capable of handling all types of discs. The DVD players were modified to be able to read and compete other discs by incorporating the MultiRead and MultiPlay features. This is possible by the addition of an extra laser optical pickup that generates both types of wavelengths. The MultiRead format was created in 1997 by OSTA. This was devised to link together the CD and DVD technologies and enable the DVD players to read CD-R and CD-RW discs. The OSTA formulated MultiPlay in 2000 to alter the CD and DVD electronic devices to be compatible with CD-R and CD-RW devices. Thereafter the MultiRead and MultiPlay compliant DVD players and recorders are able to play both CD-R and CD-RW discs. Most of the compliant DVD devices provide a MultiRead and MultiPlay logo sticker on the box to be recognized by the consumer. Where to get REGION FREE DVD players/recorders. I convey all who took measure to say InCD is a piece of shite as it messes with your sysem much more than it has to.. If you want to use a DVD-RW or DVD-Ram as a removable backup control use Nero or driveBAckup instead. All logos and trademarks in this place are property of their respective owner. "Unable to Read USB port since upgrade to XP SP2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 17:38:06

I undergo a schedule that uses a control called pcogarmin ocx. This control communicates with a Garmin GPS unit through a USB port. It was working great until some of my users were upgraded to XP service case 2. Since then they are no longer able to see their GPS via their USB turn. NOTE: These users do not undergo Admin rights to their computers. Those with Admin rights to their computers are able to use the USB ports with no problems. I undergo contacted the administrator of the PCOGarmin ocx control who had this to say:Its not related to PCOGarmin. I also use PCOGarmin im my GPS-Software TTQV. We undergo many thousends copies out. The problem are the security patches of XP-SP2. You should give beat acces to this part of the registry in HKLM where the software stores its data and also to the folder in c:\schedule files\ where your software is installed. My software TTQV does this during setup which has to be done as admin. Then a normal user can login and use TTQV and also PCOGarmin without admin rights. I have done this but it comfort doesn't work for me and I haven't been able to get approve in comprehend with the administrator. Also other programs cerebrate up to the GPS via a USB turn just book. I'm guessing it is a permissions air somewhere in the registry. Anyone have any suggestions??Thanks. C Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.5.7Copyright ©2000 - 2007. Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
