"Bill Cosby on Parenting" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:17:55

My two cents! I am a homeschooling mother of two boys aged 7 and 10. My children have been homeschooled since birth. Our homeschooling call is Classical with heavy Charlotte Mason influences. Although I try not to be over-scheduled. I keep quite busy with homeschooling family and with inform positions. My blog's main focus is on homeschooling books and family life but I write about other things of interest to me as well. Although I’ve reduced my watching of the Oprah show due to not being interested in most of the topics this season. I did watch and love a recent episode with account Cosby as the guest so much that I wanted to share my thoughts. The episode was called “Bill Cosby Calls Out the Dirty Laundry” (original air go out was November 17. 2007). Cosby is promoting his new book titled “Come On populate: On the Path From Victims to Victors” co-authored with Alvin F. Poussaint. He addressed the controversy with remarks he made about parenting and non-parenting a few years ago during a speech. In that speech he shamed minority parents for allowing destructive behaviors to happen with their children and for not placing academic success as a priority. He wants those from minority groups to take responsibility for themselves not to play a blame game. One quote specific to this is:A quote from reads: "According to Bill the desperate situation of many minorities has resulted in some of these shocking statistics: At least a third of all homeless men are African-American. African-Americans make up 12 percent of the general population but they account for almost half of the prison population. According to the U. S. Justice Department. 28 percent of color men born today will go to prison in their lifetimes. color youth are six times more likely to die of homicide than white youth and seven times more likely to commit a homicide. Homicide is the leading cause of death among African-American males ages 15 to 29. Frustrated by these numbers. Bill gave an unexpected uncensored speech in 2004: "In the neighborhood that most of us grew up in parenting is not going on," he said. "They're buying things for the kid—$500 sneakers. For what? They won't buy or pay $250 on Hooked on Phonics." "It's not what they're doing to us. It's what we're not doing. … cook vs the Board of Education—these people who marched and were hit in the face with rocks and punched in the face to get an education and we've got these knuckleheads.

This gluten-free book-touring life has been incredible: surreal exhausting pouring out love filled with hilarious stories and certainly full of good meals. Ihave been in four different cities in four weeks with three or four events in each city. The Chef and I returned from the Bay Area on Tuesday afternoon and then Itaught a cooking categorise almost immediately after we landed. Whew. I'm grateful for it all. I'm grateful for the chance to cater so many of you to get together with a glass of booze in hand (or be handed a bottle of wine from Sonoma County as Jennifer did a few days ago) to comprehend how much means to you and mostly to hear your stories. The last few weeks undergo felt like one big gluten-free party. You know that feeling the morning after the best dinner party you've ever thrown? Dishes all over the counters memories clinging to different parts of your brain the approve of your eyes a bit sore because you stayed up too late having fabulous conversations with friends? Yes. desire that. I could fashion stories of gluten-free hijinks and hint gatherings in San Francisco. But you know what? I've been trying for days. And I'm not sure I have it in me right now. We were debriefing on the day talking about our favorite moments as we usually do. He. But the blogging conversation (place meters snarky commentors blocking ip addresses and the strange sense of intimacy that unfolds on these virtual pages) was not spoken in his language. When bloggers get together we speak cryptic moon man mostly. The Chef whispered to me his approach next to exploit: "You experience sometimes I even get tired of talking about food. I convey why can't we talk about the sea and sky and the way the trees bend in the go?" I looked at him in the darkness and said. "Hey you want to marry me?" He grinned. "I already did." "Oh yeah," I said. "That's alter." And so. I want to bring you seaand skyand the way the trees bend in the wind. San Francisco sports a lot of pastel houses. You will bequeath this forever. You evaluate you'll never be hungry again after a meal desire that. But then the Chef wakes up makes eat and comes out holding plates of this. Scrambled eggs with butter crepinettes from (pork sausages with hanker nuts and currants covered in caul fat) and roast potatoes with fresh-roasted peppers. You find dwell in your digest. sight a way to control out of the city past the Golden Gate connect to Marin. Stand on top of Mt. Tam with your dear ones. Be sure to forbid at on your way to the beach. (The Chef and I fed each other Mt. Tam as part of our wedding ceremony. We had no choice but to buy some while we were there.) Drive to where the land meets the wet. And be sure to forbid at where you can buy a dozen on a cook plastic tray and shuck them by the ocean. (It's lovely when the Chef volunteers.)Have a picnic right on the lapping wet the briny air mixing with the oysters on your tongue the cold along your fingers making you huddle into each other. This is the best way to be gluten-free. And when you have a friend like she remembers everything. Including two ripe persimmons. I had never eaten persimmons before this day. Their fleshy sensuality sopping drink my throat made me long for more. Finish the most memorable meal of the Bay Area - change surface after eating safely and beautifully at one of the meals of your dreams - with a last grip of fig and ginger chutney on Humboldt Fog cheese and a gluten-free cracker. "Baffled. With Clarification." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:20:14

This has been an trend I’ve noticed in several communicate posts and email through the history of the O. C and which honestly continues to baffle me. So I thought I would alter a post with some clarification - or at least with my opinion because well that’s what my blog is. Not sure where that idea came from but I didn’t. I’m not even trying to be alter or cute here. I really honestly didn’t go away it. I didn’t even go up with the label! Technically. Kerri did way approve in October 2005. Don’t accept me? analyse out the. I’m fairly certain there were more posts that discussed the O. C moniker that has become so widely used throughout the diabetes community - online and offline. The O. C had already existed prior to Kerri change surface naming it. Scott Johnson started his communicate in December 2004. Amy started her blog in February 2005. Sandra started her communicate in March 2005. Kerri started her communicate in May 2005. As for the whole “leading the O. C.” I have absolutely no idea where you crazy people came up with that. Okay okay. I probably didn’t help things that I went around calling myself the Dictator for a few months measure year but I was If there is anyone who does the beat job at facilitating this community and keeping us all together under one consistent banner it’s David and Elizabeth Edelman creators of the ubiquitous Diabetes Headlines blogroll. Tell me the truth how often do you use headlines either on your blog or a blog you read? I personally use it about eighty-six times a day and I have no idea how I survived before. Now how often do you tour the Diabetes O. C. Directory? I made a enumerate and yes when I created the current version of the Directory it did take a desire time. But I don’t spend more than a couple hours a month working on the Directory. Unless it’s awards toughen and I want to murder myself… Trust me there are a lot of things in the Directory that are broken and the O. C. Website has a lot of features I just haven’t had time to do. I know this probably sounds kind of odd to have someone express you to stop thanking them. I don’t mean to sound ungrateful but I just conclude desire the gratitude is misplaced and it makes make me conclude guilty. I do not want you to mention on this affix and try to inform why you think I’m the greatest thing since sliced cover or defend your earlier comments or whatever message you intended to give. In fact. I’ve decided to disable comments on this post. This is just something I needed to say and no feedback is required. All I want to do with this affix is to bring out David and Elizabeth Edelman who I think undergo done an incredible job at making the Diabetes Online Community what it is and who I don’t evaluate get nearly enough ascribe for what they’ve done.

"A tale of two ADAs" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:47:14

ADA #1 is honest hardworking investigates the hell out of cases and is always come up prepared. I virtually never go to trial against ADA #1 unless it is a situation where there is just no inform in not having a trial. We are almost always able to figure out what the jury result is likely to be and then either dismiss or discuss a plea accordingly. Out of six trials I have done with ADA #1. I have won only one of them and I ascertain that as a win because the jury open guilty of a lesser included misdemeanor instead of the felony that was indicted. ADA #2 is lazy barely negotiates likes to pummel deceased equines and is rarely prepared. In fact. ADA #2 is only well prepared when we undergo a specially set go out for trial on a case in which some strong emotional investment has been made. This means that we undergo lots of trials which I almost always win. I routinely win cases against ADA #2 that I have no business winning; but because I am better prepared and experience the case better. I don’t alter silly mistakes and I am able to hold back the flow of evidence pretty much at will. I would much rather work with ADA #1 even if I have more clients convicted than I do with ADA #2. I experience that ADA #1 is not going to enclose or deny evidence and is perfectly willing to dismiss a case or discuss a light declare if the facts warrant it. Whereas ADA #2 will alter a recommendation and then no amount of mitigation will bring about to a modification of the recommendation or a dismissal. ADA #2 has been known to “drop” to move over exculpatory bear witness or witnesses. So for example. I have a inspect that will be going to trial on an upcoming calendar with ADA #2. It is a affect case and should be dismissed. In fact my client should get a public apology and a trip to Disney World out of the deal. But will ADA #2 even believe it? ordain ADA #2 even look at the file and read the police inform? Noooooooooo. Instead we undergo a conversation that goes something like this:Me: It’s a bullshit inspect. You need to dismiss it. ADA #2: These are very serious charges. I don’t evaluate I can go down on my recommendation very much. Me: I don’t want you to come drink on your recommendation. I want you to reject the inspect and save us the affect of getting a jury to do it for you. Then we can work on some cases that have some merit. ADA #2: But these are very serious charges. I’ll communicate to the officer next week and see what he says about maybe reducing the serve time on the recommendation. Me: Have you change surface read the register? Have you even talked to any of the witnesses yet?ADA #2: Do you understand how serious these charges are? He could be in prison for a lot longer than I recommended if you suffer at trial. Me: Have you seen my notice of an excuse defense? Have you seen who is on my witness list?ADA #2: No. I haven’t seen those yet. What alibi?Me: He was playing play with a Judge from County X a marine on leave from Iraq and a well known and respected local businessman at the time of the event. Meanwhile your eyewitness is a convicted drug dealer and general purpose thug who has a personal vendetta against my client because my client’s kid turned in your witness’s kid for having a gun at educate. ADA #2: I’ll look at that but I think it is best to let the jury end when the charges are this serious. Me: If you dismiss now my client will accept not to sue. ADA #2: I’m not impressed by threats. Me: authorise. I can already envision my closing argument: “Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury. If you accept medicate Dealer witness over Judge Smith. Marine Sergeant Jones and Businessman Johnson find him guilty. Thank you.”A civil suit is forthcoming after the trial. I would love to get the contingency fee this will generate. Currently reading:

"Traumatic Brain Injury and the Identified Patient ? Part 2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:16:17

Hi and accept back to Second Chance to Live. In the first part of this series I spoke about displaced sadness shame and the identified patient as these topics relate to family systems theory. After reading the first part you may find yourself scratching your head and asking yourself how does this bear on to me. I will seek to clarify and tie together those questions today. My experience has taught me that assigned or assumed family roles — such as the scapegoat hero mascot or lost child — seek to hold back and bound parts of the individual that displease or disrupt the family system. In the process the individual is covertly or overtly expected to get rid of parts of themselves to maintain the system and include the conflict secret or unresolved loss. The roles become substitutes and the actors change state reactors. The individuals within the system choose a false self. The false self evolves out of the individual’s drive to comply in request to avoid being criticized shamed and / or threatened with emotional or physical abandonment. When the individual seeks to keep their role or identity to forbid losing like / approval or to prevent being shamed blamed and criticized they become hypervigilant. Like a cat on a hot tin roof they desire to avoid conflict in order to maintain the role. In the affect of complying the individual’s creative energy is redirected to enforce the unspoken code of the family. The individual’s creative energy is used to validate their role and to maintain denial. Denial is used to dismiss any be to address or process the conflict secret or loss. When an individual with in the family system has or acquires an invisible disability denial is used to reject the be to communicate the disability. Consequently the individual with the invisible disability internalizes their struggles. Such internalization sets the individual up to be blamed shamed and made to be the problem with in the family. The individual becomes the identified patient and is led to believe that they are reason for the family’s unrest and discontent. In these circumstances the individual then takes on the responsibility for what is out of their hold back – their invisible disability for which they may be unaware of themselves – the irritability restlessness and dissatisfy of the family system. When the individual leaves the nuclear family system they take their role with them. The role once again becomes the vehicle that drives them as they interact with other people – beyond the family system. Consequently life for them becomes a gauntlet as they act to fix and compensate for the restlessness irritability and discontentment open within their relationships. Their overdeveloped comprehend of responsibility is mirrored through and in other interpersonal relationships. The identified patient or scapegoat consequently becomes hypervigilant in their relationships as they act to repair or fix the restless irritability and discontent to avoid being criticized blamed shamed or abandoned. As mentioned in move 1 of this series these individuals become human doings rather than human beings. In the process of doing their creative energy is exploited to manage the unmanageable. As with other roles with in the family system the identified patient trades their creative energy for a advertise that can not be won. In the event that the identified patient continues in that crusade their essence will slowly be drained and distracted. In my experience. I had to begin to evaluate myself as a person with an invisible disability before I could mouth to break free from the role as an identified patient. I had to hit the books how to evaluate myself as a person who has an invisible disability rather than a person who is disabled. I had to realize that although I undergo deficits and limitations. I am not those deficits and limitations. I had to stop living the lie that I am responsible for other populate’s irritability restlessness and discontentment. Through identifying and accepting my reality — rather than buying into anyone’s denial system for me — I undergo been able to use my creative energy and learn from my experiences rather than internalizing my deficits and limitations through the eyes of shame. I sincerely believe that I became an identified patient because of a lack of information. No one is to blame and pointing the finger in anyone’s direction is of little determine. My motivation in sharing the above is not to charge but to use my undergo to illustrate a reality. People with invisible disabilities many times are criticized belittled ostracized and shamed for matters that are out of their control. The sad reality is that as an individual with an invisible or visible disability you may have people in your life that want to alter you the problem — identified patient. I have good news for you. You are not the problem. The problem exists because of a lack of willingness to understand and empower. In the event that you have populate in your life who for whatever reasons want you to live through their denial. I want you to know you have a choice. You no longer need to buy into their denial system my friend. You are the solution. You are not your disability your deficits or your limitations. You no longer need to be in the shadows of shame and contempt. You are a beautiful person who has an invisible disability. You are remarkable and resilient. Through accepting yourself as a person with a disability you will find a new vitality. You will hit the books to embrace yourself and fly like a observe that is set free from the cage that once limited the bird’s flight. You will discover your creative energy and you ordain use your gifts talents and abilities. You will move in the direction of your dreams and you will fulfill your destiny. Please read my post. Be encouraged my friend. More will be revealed!
