"Asus Eee PC 701" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-02 00:17:33

This past weekend a circular advertised a Vista-powered laptop equipped with a Celeron processor. 14.1-inch display an 80GB hard control and a DVD drive for only $399. For the same determine the Asus Eee PC () offers the same amount of RAM and Celeron processor but a smaller seven-inch show a measly 4GB of storage lay and no DVD control. And yet there's no way we would furnish up this two-pound wonder for a "regular" notebook. The Eee PC may be designed to appeal to children and older customers but it should also bid anyone looking for a lightweight calculate PC that weighs next to nothing and connects to the Internet easily. It's ten times simpler to use than any Windows machine starts up twice as fast (no crapware!) and is only about a fifth of the cost of other systems in its weight categorise. It's a little rough around the edges but the Eee PC is a remarkably versatile machine for the price. Refreshing InterfaceThe reason why the Eee PC should challenge to kids and grandparents alike is the streamlined tab-based interface that offers only six easy-to-understand options: Internet. bring home the bacon. Learn. Play. Settings and Favorites. In some cases the Asus-designed menu (which runs on top of Linux) merely offers links to sites that Web-savvy users have already bookmarked like Yahoo e-mail or Google Docs but these choices are accept for a aim audience that may not be able to find these resources easily. We also appreciated the option of using these quick shortcuts as opposed to opening the browser first. Users will like having a clutter-free desktop for day-to-day use and ordain likely find navigating the various options refreshingly simple compared with XP or Vista as well as with Mac OS X. Small. But Not Too SmallWe found the small seven-inch. 800 x 480-pixel display pretty easy on the eyes especially when compared with Ultra-Mobile PCs like the (5 inches) and (5.6 inches) but most users don't have that point of reference. A three-year-old accustomed to a 14-inch LCD didn't mind the screen while she was having fun with Mickey and friends on Playhousedisney com. On the other hand we don't see many populate above the age of 50 using this device as their primary computer unless they fasten it up to a bigger external LCD which start at about $170. Overall the Eee PC's design is fairly solid and incredibly travel-friendly for the price. Our white model (black and other colors ordain come later) features an SD separate slot two USB ports and a VGA port on the right. An extra USB port. Ethernet.

"TI frees its DSP toolchain for open source apps" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:19:50

[Updated 6 P. M.] -- Texas Instruments (TI) is offering open source developers free use of its closed-source toolchain for DSPs (digital signal processors) found in several popular TI OMAP and DM-series RISC/DSP chips. The first-of-its-kind channel may displace cost barriers for prospective developers of open obtain video codecs motion sensors and other "number-crunching" applications. The toolchain is being distributed by Neuros (formerly Neuros Audio) the small scrappy Linux device company that negotiated the release. Neuros fail Joe Born recalls. "We spent many months with TI working with a few different initiatives and convinced them to let us redistribute [the toolchain]. At first they sent it to us with a standard evaluation license. We negotiated for a few months and eventually arrived at a license similar to dual-license where it's remove for use in open source projects and you can basically use it for whatever you want." Neuros hopes the compiler channel -- combined with an interesting developed by a explore "Summer of Code" intern -- will allow aspiring DSP coders to use its $200 "" as a development target instead of paying $3,000 for TI's DSP development boards and label Composer Studio tools. The OSD is based on a TI DM320 and features a C54x DSP clocked at 120MHz. The C54x is also found in DM270 parts. As for other Linux devices? Brn said. "There are Cowon and other devices that use the c54x but I'm trying to figure out exactly which." The toolchain includes a compiler optimizer assembler and linker but not a debugger which would require an expensive JTAG probe anyway the affiliate maintains. Born commented. "It's in a usable form today and some folks undergo been playing around with it [with success]. The traditional TI dev environment has a JTAG emulator and graphical tools but on the Linux align many populate don't be all of that."Neuros hopes that one of the first things populate will use the free compiler for will be to create more open source codecs for the OSD. In a blog affix announcing the release. Neuros community developer Adam Torgerson wrote in move. "With [this release] intrepid hackers will be able to write an audio driver and port change state source codecs such as libmad. Tremor and perhaps some video codecs to the DSP. With enough progress one day the OSD will no longer be [closed source software at all]."And what else besides codec development could the toolchain be used for? In a conversation with Born explained. "If you go TI's customers they're always doing interesting stuff. Facial recognition secret military stuff and advanced motion sensing. So for example if a simple algorithm in a light change by reversal can distinguish between wind blowing a paper off the desk and a person walking into the room you can get an energy savings."Born believes that wider access to DSP tools could prove in new as-yet unimagined applications. He recounts an anecdote in which Robert Oppenheimer was asked what German scientists would be in request to create the atom bomb. "'They'd be to know that we did it,' Oppenheimer replied. come up if one day somebody gets high-definition processing going on one DSP everyone else is going to say. 'We undergo to do that too!'"And that's exactly the kind of breakthrough that low-cost DSP programming tools could bring suggests Born. He explains. "I'm not a codec developer myself but measure and measure again these advanced codecs are almost always the work of a single developer. [Codec programming] is not modular or object oriented or a big behemoth programming communicate. It's just a tightly optimized algorithm that you undergo to act in your head."More details about the release -- including the remove download and its authorise -- can be found on Neuros's website. . "HD Photo to become JPEG XR" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:46:45

A new attempt to provide a higher-end sequel to the ubiquitous JPEG visualise standard is officially under way. The multiple countries participating in the Joint Photographic Experts Group which created the JPEG standard have approved an said account blow who has led Microsoft's HD Photo effort and who just took over the company's. XR stands for "extended range," a compose to the change's ability to show a wider and finer be of tonal gradations and a. "The country choose is done and it passed," blow said. "That means the International JPEG committee has decided to go ahead and act the standard. Now it's just a process of doing that work," a affect that will begin later this month in a meeting in Kobe. lacquer. The act is an important step in the transformation of the photo format from an in-house technology called Windows Media Photo to a neutral change more likely to be palatable to companies that don't be to be beholden to Microsoft. However the act also means that Microsoft will undergo to be more patient with its hopes to get HD Photo to catch on more broadly. Standardization "typically takes around a year," Crow said. The act is worth it said Josh Weisberg director of digital imaging evangelism for Microsoft's Rich Media Group. "As much as I would like to have more support for it. I think it's logical for people to act for there to be a standardized version of it," he said. "If we weren't going through the standardization process we'd be pushing much harder for people to give it." In Microsoft's believe. "Open Access bill vetoed" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:15:16

Supporters of the (OA) the open-source-inspired community that promotes free access to academic research are disappointed but not discouraged by the defeat of a bill that would undergo required research published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States to be available to the public. Instead they see the bill as an important go in raising awareness about OA among American legislators and the general public. Nor do they command out the eventual passage of the OA provisions. The bill in question is the Labor. Health and Human Services (LHHS) Appropriations Act. 2008 or which set a budget of $606 billion for spending in these areas. Among the dozens of provisions in the bill was the statement that: The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or undergo submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central an electronic version of their final peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided. That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law. The bill was vetoed by President George W. Bush on November 13. The reason for the veto was not the OA furnish which was not mentioned in his explanation of the act but rather the proposed funding for what Bush described as "wasteful projects" such as a prison museum a sailing school and a program for teaching Portuguese as a second language. Funding for stem cell research which was expected to be a reason for the contradict had already been removed from the bill. In contrast to Bush's statement. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described LHHS as "a bipartisan and fiscally responsible account." The veto was widely seen by both the and OA supporters such as blogger and Matt Cockerill of the world's largest OA publisher as part of Bush's ongoing budget assay with the Democratic majority in the Congress and the Senate. As Cockerill puts it considering the recent cater struggles between the White House and Congress everyone was "very much forewarned" of the veto. The bill returned to Congress on November 16 for a vote to overturn the presidential veto. The choose did succeed and a revised appropriations bill is now in the works. Whether that revised bill ordain include the OA provision is comfort uncertain. Obviously the policy of NIH one of the largest funders of investigate in the world has a wide influence and passage of the bill would probably undergo encouraged OA support elsewhere in the world. However disappointment over the account's failure is muted by the fact that the provision for OA in HR 3043 was relatively mild as Suber points out. Similarly. Cockerill notes that policies in such countries as the United Kingdom and Germany are in many cases already in advance of the proposed NIH policy. "This is just one facet of the overall turn to OA," he says. Both Suber and Cockerill saw reason for optimism. Suber points out that despite intensive lobbying by publishers' groups such as a proposed amendment by the White House that would have limited the OA language to ensure that the NIH policy did not undermine peer review or copyright did not survive. Similarly two amendments by Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) one to remove the OA provision and the other to dilute the language were also defeated. Both amendments. Suber suggests may undergo been inspired by Reed Elsevier one of the largest academic publishers in the United States and one of Inhote's top financial supporters. "It's very clear and a matter of public record that a good deal of money is spent by the publishers on lobbying about issues like this," Cockerill says. "But clearly in this case that wasn't enough to block the act toward increasing OA in research. The strength of feeling in government and among the research community has been able to beat that strong lobby. Just as importantly. Cockerill suggests that the three-year history of the effort to pass the NIH initiative into law has resulted in increasing awareness of OA among researchers academic administrators and elected officials. "The high profile of this bill has certainly kept OA in people's attention." he says. "A lot of the support for OA has been coming not just from those directly involved in the research community but also those who have an interest in medical investigate -- patients disease-interest groups taxpayers and populate who have an interest from a lay person's inform of believe. I evaluate it has been very good in continuing to further awareness of OA." Cockerill says that the go of the Internet has increased the bespeak for accessibility in command. populate he says are asking. "Who benefits from freezing find to data? Is it the public or is it only special interest groups who want to maintain the status quo? That question is arising in many situations." As one proof of the increased awareness. Cockerill cites a recent student forum he attended at Harvard Medical School. Several years ago he suggests such a forum would probably have debated the merits of OA. Now the consider is over the most practical steps needed to implement it. Increasingly the basic desirability of OA is being taken for granted. At any rate as Suber predicted before these events in the SPARC Open Access Newsletter the OA provision stands a strong chance of being revived. Suber notes that a modified version of LHHS is required to fund the related government departments in 2008 and that the NIH proposal has a good chance of being included in the revised appropriations account. "OA has always had strong bipartisan support and we depended on Republicans as come up as Democrats this year for the strong votes in each accommodate," Suber writes. "We particularly depended on Republican support to help prevent the publishing lobby from inserting a stronger objection to the NIH policy." In the long run then perhaps not only the war but this particular battle may still be won.

"Stick a fork in SCO. They're done." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 19:07:07

The story of SCO and its Linux lawsuits is an IP (intellectual property) epic. It's also a horror story. It showed how even with the flimsiest of bear witness one small company could attack a multi-billion dollar software industry for years. Novell looked at this and decided that rather than cerebrate on joining the broad front of the IP contend it would aim the far smaller and less nebulous front of contract law in its attempt to defeat SCO. First. In August. Novell won that inspect when a adjudicate declared that. That was enough in itself to settle SCO's chop once and for all. For you see if SCO didn't own Unix IP all of its against IBM and other companies would go apart. Seeing those cases to the end however would take even more time. So. Novell also decided to change state its legal forces on one particular inform in the assure law contend: the fact that SCO had not paid Novell from SCO's Unix deals with Sun and Microsoft. It was those very same multi-million dollar payments that SCO used to furnish its lawsuits against IBM. Red Hat and Novell. Novell claimed that "The APA (Asset acquire Agreement) makes SCO the fiduciary of Novell entrusting SCO 'to collect and go through to [Novell] one hundred percent (100%) of the SVRX Royalties.'"Novell attorneys also said that "SCO breached its trust relationship with Novell," because it received at least $25,846,000 from Sun and Microsoft through these SVRX Licenses. Instead of passing these millions to Novell. SCO used the cash for its own benefit. It's exactly these issues -- how much of that money does SCO owe Novell -- that the U. S. govern Court was about to communicate on Sept. 17. Specifically. SCO was going to face the same judge who had already ruled that Novell owned Unix. Let's do a little bookkeeping. SCO as of the evening of Sept. 14 has a total merchandise cap of $7.93 million. As of April 30 the company's last reported quarter and before the lawsuit roof cut in it were continuing to suffer money and had total assets of $19.8 million. Now if the act were to command that SCO owes Novell the whole $25 million and change... Well if that turned out to be the result it would be a case of "Do not pass go do not hive away $200 million go straight to business confine and never ever go out again."The beauty of Novell's legal plan is that change surface if SCO had had the money to pay off Novell it would still undergo gutted SCO's finances and left the affiliate unable to act any of the rest of its litigation. As it is. SCO went Chapter 11. As. "By not focusing on the arguments over who owns what in Unix but instead hammering on the far more simple be of SCO not living up to its business assure. Novell hopes to put a quick end to SCO and its seemingly endless Linux litigation."It looks desire I was alter. Congratulations Novell. Job well done. Oh sure. Chapter 11 means that SCO ordain comfort hang on for at least half-a-year longer. So what? In a Chapter 11 you re-organize to continue your business. When your big-win business plan was to alter billions by lawsuits and you can no longer pursue them while you're in Chapter 11 exactly what do you have left to re-organize?If SCO really has any kind of plan at this point -- other than for its employees to squeeze out a few more paychecks while looking for new jobs -- I can evaluate of only one thing that makes comprehend. SCO ordain try to make a deal with Novell that will end up with the affiliate paying Novell some money and begging them to let the rest of the litigation go. At the same time. SCO CEO McBride -- or his successor -- is going to have to take his hat in his hands and go to IBM HQ at Armonk. New York and say. "be. I'm sorry. Is there any way we can just alter this go away."If and that one heck of an if. SCO abandons its losing Linux litigation efforts and its enemies allow it to defeat then and only then will SCO ever appear alive out of bankruptcy. What I really expect to happen is for SCO to go out of business sometime in the next year. Stick a lift in SCO. They're done.-- The Internet is obviously a valuable resource for many organizations. However many are exposed to legal liability concerns because they disappoint to control Internet access. Learn if you're safe in this color paper. Posted on 2007-10-23 16:39:22

Hilary Gushwa the desire Ventura County winner after officials learned she was married at the measure of the pageant now claims that the care of one of the contestants she defeated was behind the investigation to undergo her taken drink. * *Through her attorneys. Gushwa claims that Jackie Youngern a pageant committee member who is also employed as an Investigative Assistant with the Ventura County District Attorney's Office used her label "in an attempt to intimidate witnesses acquire statements and solicit clerks at government offices to obtain records." Youngern's daughter also competed for the enthrone. Craziness! Ironically enough when the story first broke. Youngern was quoted by the saying. "Only girls that are entitled to it are deserving to own the crown... This program runs on trust and she's broken that believe."Gushwa says the marriage in challenge was annulled and that she committed no criminal acts. She claims that she filled out the application for the pageant in August 2004 -- "long before any alleged marriage took displace." Yeah two whole months?! The pageant and marriage took displace within weeks of each other in October 2004!Calls to Youngern's office were not immediately returned. 2. Who cares? It's only a "beauty" pageant. They should be extinct...... or is it that they be? Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by Unhinged 3 who cares ? no one watches beauty pageants anymore we have porn now ! Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by Stanley Yelnats 4. If the truth were known. Hilary Gushna lost her title because first she is ugly and second she refused to dress her name to a star's name desire Marilyn Mansfield or something like that. Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by Kris Peterson 9 to much danm bleach to the hit... another dumb blonde join,( Britt. Lo Ho. Paris & Pamela. wow minus Paris.... that would be a GREAT 3way girs on girls challenge.... I'm for it and I'm female.. just curious Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by bi curious 10. What a disgrace she has been to this organization! As a former Miss America express titleholder. I am apalled that she has the irritate to accuse. She may be an idiot but she KNEW what she was doing and that it was wrong. Theses pageants are set up to provide girls an opportunity to make a difference be a positve role model and earn $$$ for college. And she has damaged this systems reputation... I wish she gets what is coming to her! Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by SouthernBelle 11 why are these chicks always so ugly. I can go to a sit in hollywood or my vons supermarket in hermosa land and find a dozen women much more attractive than these beauty pageant fools. Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by white lady 12. Geeze.. she IS UGLY.. well she can change her label to Miss U. G. LY...:) and the other girl's mom. the one that used her power to dig this up... I don't know. did she get fired for misused of her authority ?? of our tax dollars ??? Geeze.. stupid pageant competition.. get rid of it... Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by BlueEagle 13. Funny how your illiterate intern who pretends to communicate on this place forgot to tell that investigative blogger "writer" of yours that Hilary Gushwa "Miss Ventura" and her parents set up their own pageant and crowned her "Miss Ventura County International." Talk about inflated egos. Posted at on Sep 14th 2007 by desire TMZ 15. Well duh! If the qualification information she gave on the application was correct at the time she completed the application but then that changed before the pageant commenced doesn't she evaluate that she is owing a duty to communicate the pageant officials that her qualifications changed? And rather than accept responsibility for being a fraud and not being qualified when she competed in the pageant she now tries to divert attention from the fraud she committed by condemning the mother of one of the other contestants who used her employment as an investigative assistant to the County DA to uncover the fraud. Isn't that desire a criminal blaming the police for getting caught? In addition to losing her title it seems she might have also lost her object.
