"iBT Writing using a Wiki" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-29 02:43:46

Yesterday my TOEFL students used the wikispace for their third. All went well except for one glitch. When students are in 'edit the page' mode and click to look at 'discussion,' they lose their writing if they haven't clicked on the 'save' add. There was no message to warn a student that she hadn't saved her entry. Thus she lost 20 minutes of writing her response to an integrated writing task. As I recall when I started this blog. 'blogger' also did not warn you that the draft of your post had not been saved. Now there is an automatic deliver function so that change surface if you forget your writing has usually been saved in draft create. Until Wikispaces changes their system to do automatic 'saves,' I don't see any way around the accidental loss of writing in my wiki except to inform students repeatedly to back up their entry by clicking 'save' periodically. They always have the option of handwriting although they won't be able to do that on the real iBT. The online edits went well for those students who wanted to update their writings. You can see the original unedited essays by clicking on the 'history' button above a student's writing. Some students who I didn't expect to alter editing changes or rethink/redo their previous writings did. I wish that Cambridge also had online writings because I think I could get my students to do more rewrites if they didn't have to handwrite a previously written letter or inform. The idea that the students' writing is public seems to be simultaneously intimidating (thrilling!) and motivating. For students who finished their writing activities early. I had created an with vocabulary from the previous week. That also proved to be intriguing to them. In fact they got so involved that they worked in groups to complete it during move of their break time. All in all a successful afternoon using online resources! Thanks for your comment. Christina. The wiki is an on-going project and I'm glad some people are visiting the lay besides my students. The crossword bedevil is based on reading from an academic vocabulary building text so the words are challenging. In addition the online crossword puzzlemaker has restrictions on be of letters which makes it doubly challenging to create clues. Next time. I'll probably have my students create their own crosswords online as I did for the Intermediate 2 vocab students previously.

"writing an Applescript to do folder sync or merge?" posted by ~Ray

So I used to use something called xxcopy in windows.. The switches allowed me to alter a group file that would look at the destination folder and create verbally only the files in the home folder that were not in the destination folder.. So the question is can this be done and one more caveat is that the destination folder is on the communicate not local. The reason for the batch register was so that I could schedule it during off hours. You could do it in Applescript but it would be easier in the Terminal. "The Power of Writing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:00:28

For an upcoming episode of the LD broadcast. I got to communicate to one of the leading authorities on the development of writing skills and teaching writing to students in the country.  In the course of our conversation we spoke about the importance of writing in the thought affect. Basically and at the most elementary level writing involves getting an idea translating that idea into words or pictures and transcribing it in some form typing handwriting a note drawing painting etc into another change.   I added the pictorial forms to Dr. Graham’s thoughts because while it is not strictly writing- taking pictures or painting drawing cartoons or storyboards are equally valid ways of expressing an idea so others can act with it. I asked him whether the very affect of writing the words made the thoughts more real and cover and if this is what made critique of our work so much harder to take sometimes- you undergo taken the personal and private and made it public.  He thought that was probably very adjust and I think it would be fascinating now that technology has come so far to do functional MRI’s of populate during the creative process and see how much of the sensory and emotional centers of the brain are activated. Writing here on the blog or even emails to populate I care about make me express feelings and ideas in a more concrete way.  It makes me act the idea or feeling compete with it and figure out the best way to convey the feeling or message to another hoping they receive it in the manner in which I intended it.  It makes this stuff personal and often more thoughtful and meaningful than just talking. I think this is also why we feel plagiarism and hijacking the ideas of others without ascribe as such an affront.  Ideas are cheap until they are executed on and are just thoughts but once they are expressed and shared with others they are yours and you have some ownership of them.  When you take someone’s idea and change it elaborate on it act it a go further- you then alter it your own.  When you depict an idea to a friend the last thing you want to see is a friend taking your ideas and passing them off as their own.  You might not undergo had a come about to execute on it it might be a great idea but you own it at least as far as those you have communicated it to directly.  If someone else has a similar idea but you haven’t talked with them about it first then there’s no air.  If you undergo spoken with them about it and they act your thoughts and words and present it to others as their latest and greatest thing then that’s dishonest. Writing is something that’s a fashion and we each undergo our own style and ways of expressing ourselves.  Riffing on the ideas of others is great but I think change surface on the big web we should ascribe when we can where the ideas start because that is simple honesty. The web in a small community.  It’s an insular community.  And change surface if you evaluate all ideas are up for grabs you better be cautious from whom you acquire because it may go to follow you in the future. "Writing updates" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 21:19:53

Saturday. We've driven up to New Hampshire. I have a blogging assignment tomorrow. If everything works out as planned. I'll be gathering with a clump of bloggers to converse Elizabeth Edwards tomorrow morning. I'm very excited about speaking with her. However. I'm also chomping at the bit to end my novel. I have 4,763 words to go. This morning we got off to a late start because I was in the lay of an exciting divide. I haven't slept come up recently. I fling and turn in bed as the characters act out their scenes for me. I slept a little in the car on the go up but I'm still pretty tired. Before I drifted off. I listened to a story on NPR. They were interviewing an compose and writing professor. He talked about how writing a novel just takes over your life. I've managed to act other parts of my life in a little bit of fit as I've written through my novel yet it has been consuming. Soon. I'll be done with the write through and the editing will mouth. I evaluate that ordain be even more challenging. Meanwhile. I get feedback from friends. I get a chance here and there to put up blog posts and while I'm not officially doing National communicate Posting Month at the same time as I do National Novel Writing Month but so far I'm getting at least one blog post up each day. I was dubious about getting a post up today. It may not be as compelling as some of my other posts but at least I'm managing get a post up.

"Get Off The Path Of Self-Sabotage" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 17:06:32

I undergo a story to overlap with all of you this week. Hopefully it will show you—if nothing else—how we women undergo a tendency to disobey ourselves personally and as writers simply by the way we see (or don’t see) things. I had the worst week this past week. One of those weeks where tiny things—that wouldn’t normally phase me—pecked away at my patience until I was create from raw material to hit the cover if I dropped a pen on the floor! It happens to the best of us. Unfortunately such times also tend to put us in a funk where the good things in life are clouded over. But a conversation I had with a phenomenal woman changed my perspective. On Thursday we were almost an hour late for Preschool. Xander was screaming and tired and so was Jaimie. We were up all night the night before. I finally got them there and Jaimie clung to me begging for me not to go. Her symptoms were through the roof and I seriously thought I'd have to shift her. But I guided her over to the book section set up a head so she'd have her back to the class and asked her if she'd be okay reading until she calmed drink (That’s how her teachers and I agreed Jaimie could still act in classroom activities when her symptoms are too high to cope with the social aspect.) She gave a weak. "Yeah" and I left. I stood outside the room and watched Jaimie through the window. She never participated—she didn’t even turn around. She read books until snack time then sat at the outer advance of the mats for song time (at the end). As tears welled up in my eyes I thought how unfair it was for a child to have to broach with what Jaimie has to every day on top normal kid stuff. Then I felt a strong reassuring hand on my shoulder: Judith the head of the Preschool programs (and the woman who helped me figure out ways Jaimie could participate with her peers.)After asking how Jaimie was doing—and listening to me ramble on about our week and morning—she asked how was doing. I was taken aback because I'm not asked that question often. I told her I was tired and how overwhelmingly sad it made me sometimes to check Jaimie struggle. Judith kept her hand on my shoulder and told me how she thinks Moms are so unappreciated. She says in Kenya—where she's from—mothers are viewed as Godesses. She said you can interact whomever else like crap but Mothers are respected and greatly loved. There's no Mother's Day in Kenya so children show their appreciation for their mothers in other special ways. Judith is the 10th of 11 kids and her mom was a stay-at-home mom for mother is amazing!!She then told me that she and her husband have been trying for four years to have children. She wanted to have a big family--like the one she grew up in--but thinks she's getting too old to have a one (she's almost 40). But she told me—with a bright grimace—she’d be patient."One day," She said. "I'll be blessed with a child. And if it's not my fate to be a mother. I'll simply enjoy the children I help every day."She gave me another squeeze tickled Xander’s tummy then walked approve drink to check on another class she oversees. As I sat and reflected on Judith’s words. I realized how disillusioned I’d been. It was as though someone took my glasses off cleaned them with a slap-of-reality solution then put them approve over my eyes. Yes. I had a bad week but good things happened too: I managed to conduct four interviews for article ideas and actually had a very successful writing week; I finished an assignment for school; was told I now have a 3.6 GPA; and Xander started walking. How did I overlook all of those wonderful things? One word: sabotage. Why do we do that to ourselves? We do it in our lives and in our writing. We focus on those tiny irritating things that we allow to build up and block our view from the good things that are going on around us. Then it takes a beautiful angel on earth like Judith to rip down that blocker and swing our eyes back to what’s really important. She grew up with very little but with tons of like and a strong mother who taught her to see life for what it is: tough but with sprinkles of happiness to remind her not to give up.

"Writing Home and Untold Stories by Alan Bennett" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:40:28

It seems that the playwright and author Alan Bennett has a new novella out: . So before I acquire it. I thought I’d post my reviews of two of his collected prose writings. In a forthcoming review. I’ll post my analyse of his play (and now enter) The History Boys. The writings and reminiscences in Writing domiciliate form a fairly motley collection. The book includes his diaries (which are not so much ‘diaries’ as they are collected thoughts and musings) from the mid-1980s through the 1990s prefaces to printed editions of his plays (including The Madness of George III and An Englishman Abroad) and various reviews and other writings collected for the first time. One of the most interesting selections in this collection is ‘The Lady in the Van’ a bunco story based on the life of an somewhat unbalanced elderly lady who lived in a van parked opposite Bennett’s accommodate in Camden Town. But all in all. Writing Home is a book of observations some of which reflect on the past and some of which dwell on the show…but all of which are a treat to construe. Bennett’s eye for the absurd and his love of the English language alter Writing Home a fine book to have in those moments when you’re looking for something to read that’s light and yet satisfying. It isn’t the sort of book that you’d rave about to all of your friends and try to persuade end strangers to buy; it’s the sort of book that you keep with you and pick up occasionally flipping through it and reading a selection or two before putting it drink and puttering off to do something else. Like the other books in this set of reviews. I don’t advise reading through it all at once. It’s meant to be construe in small chunks and then re-read in different chunks. Or at least that’s how I open that the book construe beat. In Untold Stories. Bennett has pulled together another selection of writings and speeches that pick up where Writing Home left off — the materials in this book cover the years from around 1995 to 2004. Some of the untold stories in the book go from Bennett’s past and family life. There’s a quiet sympathetic pen-portrait of his extended family weaving in stories of a grandfather whose suicide was hushed up by his children and his care’s sisters and their lives in and out of the dingy Leeds community where they (and he) grew up. He writes about his mother’s struggles with depression and later with dementia and the patient compassionate and concern that his usually undemonstrative father showed in those dark times. Some of the other stories are about himself as a young man uncertain of nearly everything including his sexuality and his religious faith. Included in Untold Stories are the diary selections that were printed every year in the London Review of Books his reflections on the past year. And also included in the book is a lengthy be of his experience undergoing treatment for bowel cancer which was diagnosed in 1997 and which until now he has been reluctant to address. Not all of the stories in the book are so intimately personal. There is an interesting be of the writing and production of The History Boys his most recent compete (which I had the good fortune to see at the National Theatre and which was made into an excellent enter). There are a be of amusing anecdotes featuring the actors he has known and worked with including Dame Thora Hird. Sir Alec Guinness and Dame Maggie Smith. Untold Stories is a pleasing blend of Bennett’s personal and professional life all written about with the same deft touch and careful feel for language that makes his writing a delight to read.
